The whole fucking point of the original movie is how these people are ignoring the many red flags cuz they're too polite to even mention them. The remakes ending completely shits on this for the sake of appealing to a wider and mostly American audience. The original got me thinking about it for months. This one will as well, but only as a disappointment. McAvoys acting was great tho
Really illuminating analysis. There's another aspect to this that I felt was important. In the sequence where the Daltons are trying to leave, Paddy keeps testing the limits of their civility. He invites Ben to the shed to get tools to change the tyre, he gets him to climb a ladder to retrieve Agnes' teddy, he taunts the Daltons with innuendos about Louise's affair, and he calls them out that they won't follow up with a text when they're back in London... Paddy's final escalation is to throw Ant in the lake to drown. He knows Ben will dive in to save him. Later Paddy says to Ben "you don't even love your family, if you did you'd have left him (Ant) in the pond". While it's praiseworthy that Ben tried to rescue Ant, there's a sense in which Paddy's right! It's not clear in that context that Ben should dive in the lake, as saving Ant will almost certainly result in his own and his family's death. But diving in the lake to save a drowning boy is kinda the only socially acceptable thing to do. And Paddy's made a psychopathic, correct judgment that Ben will do it. So Ben's act of heroism, to save a drowning boy, is presented as being another attempt to "keep up appearances", like climbing the ladder to get Agnes' toy or leaving his family to follow a serial killer into a toolshed. For me, this is one of the really interesting questions the movie raises... To what extent are our ethical decisions just attempts to manage appearances? Even in our bravest moments, are we all just trying to *look as if* we're doing the right thing? Is morality just civility?
I also loved that moment. It’s kind of what was in the back of my mind throughout the whole movie: if either of these parents truly loved their child or each other, they would have left. When the mom left the kid with a strange man just on the word of people she already didn’t trust that he was a babysitter, it cemented the notion in my mind. They may be attached to their family members, but they don’t really love them. At least, not enough to break a social norm for them
It reminds me of the trolley problem by Philippa Foot, where your on a trolley and it can’t stop and there’s two tracks which you can switch that can change the trolley’s direction, on one track there’s five people and on the other there is only one person. The question is do you switch the track to save five people, killing one person? or do you switch the track to save one person a land kill five people? It questions people’s morals and ethical decision making. In this context of the movie, does Ben jump in to save Ant? saving him but leaving him and his family vulnerable and to be killed, or does he drive on and let Ant drown as he’s thinking of his family, basically sacrifice one person to save his family and possibly more families if he calls the police. But we all know what he chose and it just made the film longer 😅

This is very common. Most people try to be cordial and feel compelled to do things they aren't comfortable with. You try to find a way to get out but in this case it's a setup to scam and kill tourists.
I live in the countryside. I'm more anxious and unsafe in city's. I could manage a walk out of this house with my kids any day. This film does show how people take advantage of our british keep quiet and carry on ethos.
I’m sorry but NO! that dad at no point rose up to protect his family. The mom stabbed paddy first, then the dad used the hard end of the hammer on the neighbor dude and didn’t do much damage. The wife was the one who used the sharp end and saved her husband. She also hit Ciara to knock her off the roof, and Agnes drugged paddy. That father was a huge failure every step of the way!

I was briefly left wondering about Ciara having been his original victim with no choice to leave and becoming a folie a deux situation, but she was so far gone along with the horror herself that I couldn’t muster sympathy for what she may also have endured.
She was likely captured like 🐜 and suffered Stockholm syndrome and accepted the love of her tormentor. There's actually real life clinical cases like this. But you're right she's too far gone and can't go back. She's in on the scam to rip off and kill tourists. This is similar to that Kurt Russell movie breakdown. Great movie BTW.

In the original it is made clear they kill their current kid, cut out the tongue of the next kid and go hunting again so if Keira hadn’t died Ant would be killed and this little girl would replace him.
Well done Thomas. It's rare that the US version trumps the European original. The Danish version was clever, but it placed the onus of the evil on the protagonists, which was cruel, and made the overall tenor of the film inhumane. It reminded me of 'Silence of the Lambs', which tricked the masses into siding with the murderous cannibal, instead of the noble and hard-working police force. 'Silence of the Lambs' is much more diabolical, as it actually denies Original Sin: Hannibal tells Starling, "Criminals aren't born, they're made". In other words, society creates evil, not individuals, even though society itself is composed of individuals, who are assumed to be 'noble savages'.
Watch the original if you haven't. There is no way that the message of this version is the originally intended message. The ending has been completely Americanized here.
James McAvoy stole the show! It's amazing how he plays a pacifist hero like Prof X and is terrifying as a merciless villain (Kevin/The Beast and this movie).

Americans don't like downbeat endings, especially films where kids are hurt or killed. So I knew that they would change the ending. However, that original ending is what made the first film so powerful.
I also think it would be a harder sell to think that AMERICANS could be THAT inhibited by politeness. We are also ON AVERAGE more violent than many other cultures so I think the original ending is even less plausible and less palatable for an American film. Think about it. When have you heard of school shootings in Denmark, the Netherlands or England? We act like it is normal.
Mr. Dalton could have chose to give into his carnal desire when he had the chance to shoot Paddy but Paddy would have liked for him to do that, the same way he gets enjoyment from making others do things they wouldn't usually do or don't really want to do, pushing their boundaries further and further. Unfortunately Ant gave in... It's very possible that Ant will develop a desire for blood, as Paddy and his behaviors came to exist from deep trauma...So will Ant's. hence why we must 'forgive those who trespass against us' because if we don't forgive we will potentially feel entitled to do unto others as others have done to us. Long story short Ant gave away his soul for revenge and Mr. Dalton chose to keep his.
I thought it was needlessly depressing and almost nonsensically so. They just watched their daughter get her tongue cut out and decide to quietly go along and do whatever their captor says after that? Instead of making any attempt to go save her, they’ll just lay down and die? So they learned absolutely nothing from the entire 2 hour movie and the audience is left feeling like it was all a bit of a waste
