  • Homelessness in China has become quiet the talk, especially on the Western Media. I've lived here nearly 5 years and I've never seen a homeless person in China, sooo...
I decided to go out in the middle of the night to try and find one, this TH-cam channel is about the facts, so lets see what we find.

Not only China, but if you go to Japan and South Korea or even North Korea it's the same thing. There is something about the Asians that they know to work hard and earn a living, not to get rich but at least be well off the street. They are also a homogeneous and more tight-knit society unlike the Western urban (not rural towns) society there is basically a collapse of neighborhood community and interpersonal connectivity (don't know or don't care who lives next door)

I used to not understand why many Westerners always asked where the homeless? Are foreigners safe in China?while they are watching western traveler's vlog in China. Later, I went to some foreign countries and understood the reason why.
Just like people in Western countries, they grew up and lived in an environment surrounded by homelessness, drug abuse, violence, robbery, shooting, etc., so they think it is normal and reasonable to have these things in the city.
But now Chinese children grow up in an environment with clean streets, numerous public cameras, free wandering in the middle of the night without worrying about personal safety, rich food, ubiquitous high-speed rail, convenient express delivery, mobile payment, etc., and think that these are the normal society life.
About ten or twenty years ago, it was still easy to see some homeless people and beggars in China, but the government's years of poverty alleviation work have greatly improved and eliminated this situation, so now it is difficult to find homeless people in cities and towns in China, and even in towns and villages. The government does not need to deliberately conceal some non-existent people.
However, if you really want to seek for homeless deliberately, you may find a very small number of homeless accidentally in maybe some abandoned building? But the odds are still pretty low. the most of whom may have mental problems, such as emotional frustration, family breakdown, etc. Once they are found, there will be relief organizations to help them, contact their relatives, send them back to their hometowns, and even arrange some suitable jobs for them to make a living and make them self-reliant.
As for China's rural areas, you may think that there must be the real poor, backward, and dirty China you want to see, right? Sorry, you are wrong again. Extremely poor rural areas do exist, but there are not many now. Those rural areas are basically due to geographical limitations, such as in remote mountainous areas, there are no direct roads, and there are no active local industries, which leads to young people running to developed cities to work and unable to build their hometowns.
However, what you may not know is that the Chinese government also has governance and arrangements for this situation. Every year, some college students or young managers with higher education are sent to various poor mountain villages as secretaries, using their knowledge and open-minded thinking to manage and develop rural areas and help rural areas get rid of poverty and become rich. Their term of office is generally 3-5 years. If these people do a good job, they can also become local representatives in the future. These are our candidates. Only those who have been trained in the most grassroots work, made outstanding contributions, and are recognized by the masses are qualified to become candidates for higher-level people's congress representatives. Instead of voting for those who spend money on advertising or make sweet speeches to be mayors, governors, congressmen, and presidents.
If you still don't want to believe it, save a few months' salary, come to China and see for yourself, choose a place on the map at random, see it with your eyes, and think with your brain, feel with your heart.

Because the Anglo-Saxon ppl cannot understand what peace is. According to their pathetically short history, any country that raises would start taking colonies and eventually start a world war.
In modern world if a country develops it would have way too much producing power that overwhelms its own market, then it seeks a new market where they can dump products, which is called a colony. That’s how the WW1and 2 starts, and they see China just like the way they saw Germany.
However, China has found a solution to this bad circle, which is the Belt and Road Initiative. Instead of dumping cheap goods to colonies and destroy their economy and resources, China sets up those foundations to first build infrastructures, then boost the local economies, then trade the local resources w/ products from China. It’s a longer process, but no pain or violence for the local people.
But in the eyes of western people, it’s a challenge to their “authorities”. “How dare you!”😂😂

Lizzy is correct in so many points. The Chinese are hardworking, family centered, self-sacrificing, and peace loving. That is why no matter what country the Chinese emigrate to, they will always thrive and adjust well; hence, their well-known moniker "model minority." If you look at the homeless populations in the West, very few (or none) are Chinese. They will work any job to survive and to make sure their children have a good education so they can have a better life than their parents.

This video is just another piece of stupid Chinese communist propaganda, full of lies and ignorance, all garbage. There is definitely homelessness in China, everybody in China knows it unless you deliberately turn a blind eye to the reality. Just look at those iron railings on doors and windows, you would think Chinese homes are like prison cells, how can you say China is a safe country? The only country where there is no homelessness is North Korea, but does that mean North Korea is a better place?

As a local citizen lived in Chengdu for 20 years, I'm very glad that you enjoy your stay here😊
And to be frankly, what I want to say is, there are also homeless people in China’s big cities, not really none. At least they were quite common 20 or 30 years ago. Back then, there was a notorious law called “Custody and Repatriation”, which forced the homeless people to go back to their hometowns. I remember that 20 years ago, the McDonald’s stores in China’s big cities were often full of homeless people at night. But things are always getting better. As China’s economy gets better and better, the government also starts to change those brutal practices. They give more relief to the homeless people, help them find jobs, and even rent some cheap houses. I don’t agree with everything the government does, but I generally think that our country’s government is very responsible in taking care of the poor.

Because these people come to big cities with bad intentions, maybe to beg, in short because of poverty. The government sends them back to their hometown, and the government in their hometown will help them, train them in work skills, and let them fight poverty through their own labor. It's not the kind of repatriation you imagine.

I really believed that everything was better there, and everything sucked here, and the government was the worst villain ever (of course, China did have a lot of problems back then).
But after working for more than 10 years, I saw more of the social reality, witnessed the development of our country and society, and also visited many of the so-called developed countries. I saw more of the social truth that was hidden behind the media hype. I’m not the naive little fool who thought the world was only black and white, good and evil, like I was 10 years ago.

Freedom to take drugs, freedom to challenge authority, freedom to tear down your own marriage. Over in China or Asia, they have something called communal spirit, and you as a man or woman have to perform your natural duties as mother and wife or as father and husband etc. Not, constantly brandishing your feminist rights which is very shameful to them and not walking out on your family because you prefer to drink and take booze in pubs. They know what is SHAME. Americans and British mostly don't.

As a Chinese, I remember seeing homeless people on the street when I was ten years old. Most of them are physically disabled or have mental problems begging on the streets. When I was in junior high school (about sixteen years old), our municipal government launched a policy to house homeless people. My relatives who work in the government told us that homeless people in the city will enter the shelter in batches, where they will temporarily receive clean shelter and food. During this period, the staff will check the personnel information and send those who can be sent back to their hometowns. If family members cannot be found, the government will also provide them with temporary housing until they find work. (By the way, many jobs in China will provide food and accommodation, such as security guards, waiters, or workers. The company will provide simple dormitories.) People with mental problems will be sent to psychiatric hospitals. After the problem of a group of homeless people is completely solved, another group will be sent. The whole process lasted for more than a year and basically solved the homeless problem in the city. Now if a homeless encampment appeared in our city, it would be big news for the entire municipality.

However, I have lived in Shanghai, Beijing, Qingdao, Beihai, Hangzhou and Nanjing over the span of over 2 decades. In Beijing, there ARE beggars nowadays but very few. In the 90s the beggars were rampant. Most of the beggars are old or handicapped or both. You can find them at tourist spots like The Llama Temple. I walk pass them every morning on the way to work. Also, like Lizzy, I don't seem to be able to see any of them sleeping at sidewalks or subways. Where do they live at night? And yes, it is very safe to walk around at any time of the day or night. In the metropolitan like Shanghai or Beijing, I walked in dark alleys without fearing for my life. Not sure if it is the same in other cities. It is true that there were snatchers on bikes in the 90's and early 2000, but the cases have been reduced to almost none these days. I am a Chinese native and I have been to Japan and Egypt for a trip, and I am planning to travel to the UK next summer. I want to say most of your narratives are correct, I really appreciate that. However, I still want to mention that the homeless does exist but it's like what you said, being homeless is so different in China compared to the US.
As far as I'm concerned, There are some reasons I want to say:
1.Most ancester of people in China city, are basically farmers, and farmers seldom become homeless because they have farmland (though not big). And as everybody knows ,China's urbanization happened just in the past 40 years, which means most of people in China citys, their fathers(mothers) or grandfathers(grandmothers) own a small farmland. So when someone becomes homeless due to business failure or something, they still can return to rural areas, and take on their old farmland their (grand-)fathers rent to rural local government when their fathers go to city, government will return that to them if they can't find any job in city. So basically it's very hard in China to become completely homeless.
2.If someone lose their job and still want to live in a city, There are some aid stations where provides free food and beds. But one thing in these aid stations is forbidden: they are NOT allowed to PLAY mobile phones, which makes the life there boring. I think everyone can understand that: the government respect those who strive to work but failed, and the aid station is willing to help them find the next job. But Chinese government doesn't help those who are lazy. It just like what you said in video, the big father's love.
3.There are a group of people you may be interested in, they are called "三和大神" , and they are the people closest to the homeless. They work for like one day and then live a frugal life the next three days until they use up all the money and then work one day more...They live in internet cafes because internet cafes are cheap and they cannot or don't even care about having a apartment. At the time you film this video, the "homeless" are playing computer games in internet cafes...BTW, "大神" means "the master". And "三和" is the name of a famous labour market in ShenZhen, there are lots of people living in this kind of life style.

To be fair, in China, there are people camping on the streets, but very few. I am a community worker. Just last week, I thought there were no homeless people in my community (4 square kilometers), until one of my colleagues told me:
Do you know? There is a young woman sleeping on the ground in the underground passage. What should we do?
We discussed for a while and thought she might have come from another city, currently unemployed, and unwilling to spend money on hotels. Finally, we reported this matter to the Civil Affairs Bureau, and they will send someone to give her a blanket and food.
Later on, I found out that the Civil Affairs Bureau would have dedicated personnel responsible for patrolling places such as heating pipeline wells, bridges, and street passages in winter. If homeless people were found, they would be advised to stay in shelters. If they were unwilling to go, they would be given warm clothing, blankets, and food to prevent them from freezing to death.
In short, there are indeed very few homeless people in China. Even as a community worker, I may not be aware of their existence.

I lived in China for about 3 years and everything she said is spot on. As a woman I never felt unsafe for a minute even walking around outside in places I had never been. Every government is corrupt to some degree. The biggest difference between the Chinese government and the U.S. government that I see is, the Chinese government still cares about what the people think of it. The US government has gotten to the point where they don’t give a phuk at all any more what the people think of them. The Chinese people are crazy how hard they work it’s like ridiculous. Sometimes it’s just too much, trying to sleep at night with jack hammers going off at 3 am in the city…. Never did I see a homeless person.

Chengdu is really a very nice city, the people there are very friendly. Some years ago I have been there for a concert, and the stadium is like in countyside, very far from the center, and I just wanted to call a taxi by phone and then a didi car stopped in front of me and dropped a passenger, then I asked the driver if he can take to me to the stadium. it was dinner time actually and he was going to go home but he kindly let me in and took me Free. After the concert I rent a bike to my hotel at midnight, there were few people on the street bu I still felt very safe. Hope you have fun in Chengdu, but I reccomand you eat the food WEI LAI, and it's spicy enough.

Hello Lizzy ! Living in Asia, I know well China where my wife has family, and I don't use to watch videos about that country; often propaganda against China.
But I shared your nighty ride looking for homeless people !
I agree with your analyse, of course. I would like to add, and it's a significant difference with the West, that Chinese families give an strong education to their children, and having a job and being honest are values that are essential. That has a huge impact on employment and security.
Honesty, being a good human being and a good citizen, are values that come from parents, from families, from society.
In China, and in Asia, parents tell their kids : You want something ? Work hard and buy it !
In the West, today, parents are absent and movies & social nets tell the kids : You want something ? Steal it !
About drugs, you're right to make travellers afraid, but we can't say that consumers are killed ! Only big dealers are severely punished.

As a Chinese at the age of 42,my opinion about why there is few homeless people out on the streets is: there is always a job for people who are willing to earn a living, even though the pay for a low skill and temporary job sometimes is low. But it still is enough for food and for the rental of cheap apartment or motel. And for those drug addicts who are willing to live on the street, they will be sent to rehab center as soon as the police noticed.

So they were given boats for tourists travel down the river. In China, even in the small city where I live, there are shops and barbecues at 3 o'clock in the morning. You don't need to worry about the safety of going out late at night. Even if there is an emergency or a traffic accident and the elderly fall and are injured, you only need to call the police. Traffic cameras can find you and help you, and they can arrive within minutes to solve your problem.

China has shelters to accommodate homeless people, which is mandatory. Although vagrants have the right to wander, their wandering behavior poses a potential threat to social security.
This is traditional Chinese culture, where individuals take responsibility for society rather than just doing whatever they want.

Even in China's rural areas, concerns about encountering malicious individuals are minimal, given the current low incidence of public security issues. However, one should still exercise caution when venturing out late in the countryside. Personally, I've been startled by small animals, a testament to China's impressive ecological recovery.

Some beggars in China are professional beggars. Those who really need help will not be singing and begging on the side of the road. Chinese people value dignity.

In China, there are still often homeless married men who forget the time to go home because they went crazy at night. In most cases, the wives at home will not let the men enter the house again as a warning. There are also drunk people who may sleep on the roadside at night, of course, without being discovered by patrolling police.
In China, it can only be said that it is a relatively safe country, but it is not absolutely safe. Girls still need someone to accompany them when traveling at night. In every country, there are good people and bad people, although China is in your mind , it is really safe, but you also need to pay more attention to avoid accidents!

Men who have wives waiting for them at home are not homeless. When the men are barred from home as a punishment, it’s called being sent to the dog house.

In China, there are homeless people, but they usually appear under bridges in some remote areas. In those places, there are no urban management or police to drive them away. Of course, in cities, there are still some homeless people who are taken to nearby police stations by the police. However, there are not that many homeless people. Even under the current pressure to survive, if they can't live in the city, they will return to their hometown in the countryside.

Welcome to my hometown Chengdu, thank you for your video. I just went on a trip to Cape Town, South Africa this year. visited Table Mountain and Cape of Good Hope. went diving, the beautiful sea of South Africa is awesome, I will never forget it all my life. While encountering many friendly people, the problem of homeless people filling the streets is indeed a problem. So I fully understand your value for security. After visiting many countries and working with people of various religious beliefs, various race , I believe that humanity still has more commonality than diversity. What we all need is better education and better economic conditions. Wishing the world a better place ❤

Main reason that there is almost no homeless people is that pretty much everyone does have their own homes in China. I can't think of anyone would be having no home. There are beggars in China, but they also have their homes somewhere. I also agree that there is no drug problem like in the west, and people with mental illness will be sent into some institutions instead of wandering around in streets.

A little under 20 years ago, there were “beggars” in Beijing. As a tourist group, and old man with 1 leg and his “granddaughter” carrying a portrait of a dead relative came to us begging for money. Have a feeling they were professional beggars at the time. Not sure what’s happened since then. Nice to know it isn’t around anymore. It was pretty freaky at the time.

3:42 One point I do agree with Lizzy, I lived in one big western country for almost 10 years. I was unemployed when my wife was 6 months pregnanted and you can imagine how worry I was in terms of my financial issues. Sure I filed my application for UI (unemployment insurance), while I kept on looking for another job. Luckily I found one while the application was still in process. Most Chinese people preferred to spend their hard earned money rather than taking people's help, just because it feels much better!
