    Been a lot tech/porter for over 15 years. Love it till this day. Luckily it's a lot higher pay here, if not I would've left a long time ago. The satisfaction of a straight lot knowing every car has gas, keys not missing, safety checks and registrations all valid, is only something we porters can truly appreciate. Great video. Aloha from Hawaii 🤙

      That's awesome, man! It's cool knowing you enjoy your job as much as you do! I hope your employer appreciates what you do just as much as you love doing what you do. It was fun times getting a box full of keys and just heading out to the lot to straighten out and organize 60+ vehicles on my own.

    I was a porter at ford in michigan, i had to wash cars (not detail), make sure the lot was gassed up and squared away, Ran customers around while the vehicle got serviced, cleaned up around the shop and ran the bank run everyday (few other small errands aswell. Within the 5 years of doing this i learned a hell of alot about detailing vehicles. I went to 2 classes of detail trainings in chicago and became certified. Now im a detailer at a Mercedes dealership making double what i made and have side job details i do sometimes on the weekends. Being a porter gave me a path in life and i thank that!

    I’ve been in sales forever and applied to a sales position with a dealer. Got the job but I realized I needed a break from sales. Saw a posting for a porter position at one of their other locations and applied and took it. Small dealer 60-70 cars. Looking forward to just going to work and not stress about having to make a lot of money. May be a good fit in this stage of my life.

    • @joelcosita
      @joelcosita  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I imagine it's going to be night and day. When I was a porter I could never imagine being in sales. Some of the sales guys I worked with made some good money but they practically lived at the dealership!!! I was asked several times during my 2-3 years as a porter to go to sales by the managers but I always said no.

      @@mat11trick I loved it for a while. Especially since I was the only one trusted with the manual transmission cars. But, I was also the ONLY person the sales manager went to for the front lot to be reorganized. Whether it was 95 degrees, or 35 degrees, I was forced outside to move over 220 cars on my own at least once a week, sometimes twice. I'm no longer there as that situation caused a heated argument with me and said sales manager. I got a call shortly after from the owner of the dealership apologizing for the managers behavior, and he said if I would like to return there for employment, I was more than welcome.

      Driving a stick is easy to learn with practice. It’s mainly getting a feel for the clutch and it’s grip point (usually about halfway when releasing the pedal) so you don’t stall the engine. It took me about a week to learn to drive my GTI. Each car feels a little different and you’ll shift smoother with practice.

Thank you in advance

    • @rexkwando09
      @rexkwando09 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@princeishan2220 a porter is basically a groundskeeper, you do a lot of the underling tasks in order for the rest of the staff to be able to focus on their work. A sales rep is literally what it is, if you are good at communicating with people and have an uncanny ability to convince people to buy stuff, that's the job for you. Porter is an easy job, only thing you're often required to know is how to drive. Sales is a million dollar skill, and often that position is commissioned based pay.

    • @joelcosita
      @joelcosita  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Josh I did it every day! :P
      When it was just me I would get it as close as possible and then I would get in and out of the car to check how the license plate of the car would line up with that of the car next to it. Sometimes I would get in and out (moving the car back and forth as well) as many as 6-7 times before it would line up. But it was the uniformity that I loved to see which is why I would be so meticulous. When I had a co-worker we would guide each other, one would guide while the other lines up the cars. : )

      I think it varies by dealership, honestly. I could be wrong. The main requirement is a clean driving record since a lot of cars are being handled. I was 26 when i first got the job back in 2014 and the issue of ages wasn't even brought up. Now that i work as a part time vehicle inventory photographer in a car dealership here in Cali I actually asked (on someone else's behalf) and for a porter all they ask is that you're over 18, have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record. :)

      Hi! I would normally leave around 3-4 pm every day. I realize the sales personnel and some managers would leave very late but that was not the case for me. I was a lot porter. The porters that worked in the detail shop (washing/detailing cars) would also leave late on a regular basis depending if a sale was made late in the day and the car had to be cleaned for the customer.
      Some stores do have different porter positions. I was lucky in the sense that I landed the position which didn't require me to be there after 4 pm. It was also a small dealership compared to most toyota or ford stores.
      If you work in the detail department chances are you might have to work late on occasion.

      Jack bron if you really want to do it all you really need is a driver's license and a clean record. I don't know if the dealerships in your area have a certain age requirement (18 or 21) but I would go ask we'll before you graduate just so you can know. I would also start applying ahead of time so that you can have a job lined up. It might not matter to some people but it also wouldn't hurt to go to the dealership in person and ask if they have any job openings for the position you want. :)
      I hope you get what you want and good luck!!!! Don't forget to come back and tell us all you've graduated as well so we can congratulate you! :)

    Do you need another type of experience? I am interested cuz it looks like fun I love driving! And as a way to pay for my college classes and hopefully they have hours in the night as well? Or afternoon?

    • @joelcosita
      @joelcosita  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, I couldn't give you a straight answer. It really depends on each dealership. They hired me without any experience. And shoot, if you don't have any other bills to pay and if they're (the dealership) willing to work with your school schedule, this isn't a bad way to go. It's an easy job to learn real quick and if you aren't used to driving in tight spaces you'll learn real quick to back into tight spots and drive around a lot of cars. It's a good learning experience, especially for beginner drivers, which I'm not saying you are, but this is a good experience non the less.
      Good luck and please. let us know how it turns out!

    • @joelcosita
      @joelcosita  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unstoppable the answer is YES!!!!!! They offered me the chance many times!!! Well to go from Porter to Salesman at least. I always turned it down though because every day I saw just how many hours the sales personnel worked. Don't get me wrong, being in sales can be extremely rewarding!!!! Once you are established, have a good reputation and keep up the hard work you can make a lot of money!!!! One of the salesmen at this particular store made $7,000-$12,000 a MONTH!!!!! He also sold 20-30 cars a month, he also practically lived at the dealership. :( I only took the job as Porter because they said they would be flexible with my college course hours and they kept their word, they were EXTREMELY flexible and always super nice to me! After working there a few months they offered me a position in sales but I turned it down simply because of all of the hours they all worked. No amount of money would be worth all those long hours in a job which I didn't truly enjoy. That's just me though. Now I make videos for a living and take pictures of cars part time at a car dealership here in California. Please forgive me if my response is way too long. 😂😂😂
      All I know is, if you are an excellent worker and you are naturally super friendly it will get noticed. :) So good luck and I hope you get what you want!!!!! :D

    • @joelcosita
      @joelcosita  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly I don't think I could answer your questions. Every dealership is different so employee benefits might differ. I would hate to tell you one thing and have it be wrong when you go ask about it.
      I have never leased a car so I wouldn't be able to answer that question either.
      That being said employee discounts can be perks if you work for a good dealership AND if you know how to negotiate.
      I got to drive a lot of different cars and had minimal to almost no supervision once I learned to do the job right, which didn't take long. I love driving so all three of these things were perks for me, others might not necessarily consider these things perks.
      I hope you get the job you want or need and I hope it leads to greater things!!! :)
