    This is a video I put together of footage that I recorded while working as a car porter / lot attendant / lot porter at Red Mccombs Hyundai North West of San Antonio, TX. This footage was shot over the course of almost 3 years.
    Before I started working as a car dealership porter in August of 2014 I googled the question " What does a car porter do? / What does a car porter do? " and a few threads and 1 or 2 videos popped up.
    This video is of my personal experience as a car porter at a dealership. :) There are quite a few details that I left out. This is an easy job but sometimes getting different instructions from 2-3 different managers can make things interesting.
    I quit my job as a lot porter (on April 2016) to move to California and make videos for a living. Making videos for a living is what I do now for a company called Amoretti (since August 2016) and I also now work part time as an Inventory Photographer at a car dealership here in California.
    Check out some of my professional work:
    • Professional Work
    In May of 2019 I quit my job as professional videographer to pursue a different career ( I can get into details of this at a later date (Current date of this update: 02/05/2020)). Here is a suuuuuuuuper short snippet of behind the scenes footage of my job as Videographer:
    • Macro Test Footage of ...
    This short video is only a VERY small glimpse into my three years as a professional videographer. I would like to make time in the near future to sit down and make an in-depth video of my life as a videographer.
    I never would've thought it but my experience as a lot porter in Texas definitely helped me land a job as a Car Photographer here in California AND as a food videographer.

    Been a lot tech/porter for over 15 years. Love it till this day. Luckily it's a lot higher pay here, if not I would've left a long time ago. The satisfaction of a straight lot knowing every car has gas, keys not missing, safety checks and registrations all valid, is only something we porters can truly appreciate. Great video. Within the 5 years of doing this i learned a hell of alot about detailing vehicles. I went to 2 classes of detail trainings in chicago and became certified. I’ve been in sales forever and applied to a sales position with a dealer. Got the job but I realized I needed a break from sales. Saw a posting for a porter position at one of their other locations and applied and took it. Small dealer 60-70 cars. Looking forward to just going to work and not stress about having to make a lot of money. May be a good fit in this stage of my life.

      I imagine it's going to be night and day. When I was a porter I could never imagine being in sales. Some of the sales guys I worked with made some good money but they practically lived at the dealership!!! I was asked several times during my 2-3 years as a porter to go to sales by the managers but I always said no.

      @@princeishan2220 a porter is basically a groundskeeper, you do a lot of the underling tasks in order for the rest of the staff to be able to focus on their work. A sales rep is literally what it is, if you are good at communicating with people and have an uncanny ability to convince people to buy stuff, that's the job for you. Porter is an easy job, only thing you're often required to know is how to drive. Sales is a million dollar skill, and often that position is commissioned based pay.

      Driving a stick is easy to learn with practice. It’s mainly getting a feel for the clutch and it’s grip point (usually about halfway when releasing the pedal) so you don’t stall the engine. It took me about a week to learn to drive my GTI. Each car feels a little different and you’ll shift smoother with practice.

    As a porter where I work, nothing is this smooth...and we don't even have many vehicles. Poor communication among the entire service department 🤦

    • @joelcosita
      @joelcosita  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That really sucks, man!
      In the dealership I used to work at, the sales building/lot had it's own porter, that was me.
      Detail shop had 3 porters and Service had 1 porter that would drive people around.
      All I did was arrange cars in the lot really.

    What was your method for lining up the cars perfectly straight? Or did you bother with that? I've always had that struggle when I don't have a line of reference.

    • @joelcosita
      @joelcosita  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Josh I did it every day! :P
      When it was just me I would get it as close as possible and then I would get in and out of the car to check how the license plate of the car would line up with that of the car next to it. Sometimes I would get in and out (moving the car back and forth as well) as many as 6-7 times before it would line up. But it was the uniformity that I loved to see which is why I would be so meticulous. When I had a co-worker we would guide each other, one would guide while the other lines up the cars. : )

    I’m curious, you started at around 7, what time would you leave at? And how many hours would you say a full time Lot Porter puts in a week?
    Also, do lot porter have different shifts, like morning or evening?
    Sorry for all the questions, great video!!

    • @joelcosita
      @joelcosita  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi! I would normally leave around 3-4 pm every day. I realize the sales personnel and some managers would leave very late but that was not the case for me. I was a lot porter. The porters that worked in the detail shop (washing/detailing cars) would also leave late on a regular basis depending if a sale was made late in the day and the car had to be cleaned for the customer.
      Some stores do have different porter positions. I was lucky in the sense that I landed the position which didn't require me to be there after 4 pm. It was also a small dealership compared to most toyota or ford stores.
      If you work in the detail department chances are you might have to work late on occasion.
      I would usually do 40 hours a week. :)

      @joelcosita  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Iman Cullom I dont ever remember feeling overwhelmed in any sense of the word. There was a point in time when i was the only porter on the lot but it wasn't too bad for me. I genuinely enjoyed the job as a temporary job. It was fun to learn how to drive manual on the job as well.
      I dont know about other dealerships but it wasn't a requirement to know how to drive manual before starting.

      What about using this job as a learning experience and learn to park ON the job? :P We'll all get embarrassed sooner or later, it's how you handle that embarrassment that shows who you really are. If you take this job you'll learn to do a better parking job than many other people who've know how to "park" for years. It'll just take a bit of time to learn it. :)

    I'm gonna start working at a Nissan dealership and pretty excited. But I have little to no experience driving stick because I never owned one or ever had a friend have the time to teach me the basics. Would the car dealership try and teach me or would they let other people drive the stick cars until I eventually learned?

    • @joelcosita
      @joelcosita  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every place is different. They knew when they hired me that I couldn't drive manual but my coworker sat in with me once and I learned on my own from then on. I just made it a point to drive manual cars around the lot and they were ok with it.
      At first I tried to let my coworker handle the manual cars but eventually I had to learn because he wasn't gonna move all of those cars for me. :P
