Mr. Borgnine was a well mannered, and genuinely nice man. How many of today's "stars" would take the time to interact with the general public? I grew up in a little town 40 miles north of L.A. called Santa Paula, and I've had the pleasure of meeting several movie stars who've come into town for a respite from their busy lives and Mr. Borgnine was a true pleasure to meet and have a conversation with. I have terrific memories of our exchanges. He was a decent man and this world is a lesser place without him. May he rest in peace.
You grew up in Santa Paula? My father had a gas station at the very end of town, where the 126 made a dog leg turn into the country highway going to Fillmore. Just a stones throw from the little red school house. Von Dutch and Steve McQueen used to hang out there.

Great value system and moral compass, also bright with a great sense of humor. God broke the mold when he created Ernie.

I loved his movies from "Marty" to the "The Poseidon Adventure.' and of course I loved him and Tim Conway in Mc Hales Navy" . He was quite a man and a great dramatic and comedic actor. I never had the chance to meet him in person but I did see him once. Back in 1959 I and my parents were touring California and we were in Los Angeles. Naturally my mother wanted to do the "movie star thing". You know , the house tours and the studio tours and Grauman's Chinese Theater. We were on our way to the theater when someone told us we should wait until that evening to go because there was going to be a premiere of a new picture there and all the stars would be present. The person could not remember what picture but we went anyway and got there early so we could stand as close as we could to the red carpet. Well the movie was "The Vikings" with your dad, Tony Curtis, Kirk Douglas, and Janet Leigh. They were all there and it really was a high point of our vacation. God bless him.

@@Cris_Borgnine Dear Chris, thanks for responding. That trip to CA was really something. I came across the menu from the Brown Derby where we ate before going to Grauman's that night. I wrote that I saw George Goebel and Charles Laughton there, but I was too afraid to ask or an autograph, even though the waiter said that they would not mind. I wish that they would bring back the restaurant and the same PRICES! Fat chance though.

I watch a lot of site known as Uncle Earls Classic TV being a baby boomer. It has movies and TV from the early days of both, I wanted to major in theater in college and had did a lot in high school, But my parents looked at me like I planned to play piano in a whorehouse. So I went to law school and met more whores and thieves that you could shake a stick at. Luckily i married a girl who was a theatre major and lived in a town that was starting a community theater. We helped get it going until i accepted a commission in the Air Force and moved to San Antonio Tx.. But in our absence the theatre no only survived, but thrived, and will celebrated it's 50th anniversary in 2023 In 1990 I moved back to my home town and we tried to get a theater group started here but the old theater that we were trying to save was sold to a church, that tried to make a go of it as a church but failed. They want to give it back to the city, who wants to bulldoze it for a parking lot. There are a bunch of us trying to save the place because it is an old art deco theatre and should be used to help revive our town. Besides we have some connection with Hollywood and possibly with a man you Dad might have met. Howard Keel was born and raised here in Gillespie IL until his family moved to CA when he was in high school. Our neighboring town,,Benld IL, also was once a big name in entertainment, having the biggest ballroom between, Chicago and St Louis. It started out as a venue for the big bands but by the late 50's and into the 80's and early 90's it was rock and roll. I hung out there in the 60's and 70's and saw singers and groups such as Chuck Berry, Ike and Tina, Turner, Joe Tex, Wilson Pickett, Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs, and a California group known as The Association, and many more. You could dance from 7:00 pm t o 1:00 am There is a site or two here on You Tube where you can see the history of the place. It is the Coliseum Ballroom in Benld, Illinois and it has a great history from the days of Prohibition to the early days of rock and roll. Check it out.

I sure miss him and all the other Hollywood Elites I'm the good old days as you could say. Many of them actually cared about people. I'm not saying many of the celebrities don't care about people nowadays but it's just completely different. The celebrities of yesteryear acted like normal human beings and had humility. My late brother was a transportation coordinator and driver for Universal. He was on many locations with the stars. He said many were egotistical, self-centered, elitists to good for the crews. He said Ernest and his wife would always sit with the crew members. They would bake brownies or cookies to share with everyone. Ernest was down to earth nice guy and was his favorite of them all, and mine. I'm glad you were able to capture and share this.
No one has how great of a part that you sir played in convoy and we as truck driver do really appreciate you giving us a great name thanks for all you do sir and for serving our great country in the time you spent in the Navy
I spent 30 years trucking across this great country and a lot of it in the North West. Stopped at the Crossroads Truck Stop on numerous occasions in Umatilla, Or. They have pictures of Ernest on the wall and they said he visited now and then. Would have loved to have had a chance to meet this man. " Roll On Ernest", We Love Ya"! ... And thanks...👍

I have always loved Ernest Borgnine since I was a kid, it's so nice to see some of these interviews and interviews with his old cast of McHale's Navy and other actors in people who spoke so highly of him, in my heart it makes me feel good because I looked up to Ernest Borgnine as a great actor in a role model and it sure is nice to hear all these good things about him, I loved him in McHale's Navy used to watch it every day when it would come on or every week when it first came on but I really loved his work in Jesus of Nazareth as the Centurion who asked the Lord to heal his servant, it just puts Goosebumps on your arms he did such a fine job in that role, God bless you Ernest Borgnine and hope to meet you someday when it's my turn to come home , AMEN !!!
I would have loved to have met such a great man. My Dad met many of hollywoods best in the 50's and 60's. I do not recall of him saying he met Ernest Borgnine, he may have. I do remember him saying he met John Wayne. My Dad had several parking lots down town Indianapolis, right by the Athletic club on Pennsylvania Ave. I digress, I want to say to Chris Borgnine, It is so sad we had older parents! I met Ernest Borgnine not 2 weeks after my wife and I hosted a 'Marty Party'. What an unbelievably humble gentleman he was. What a great thrill and an honor it was.
I always liked him as an actor....he played many mean rolls.....proves what a great actor he was because in real life he was a class act.....RIP.....(welsh working class artist UK )

Ernie thanked Burt Lancaster, for his lead role in “Marty” (1955). Burt produced the film, and thought Ernie was perfect actor for the role. He won the Oscar, beating out many stars his senior as well as James Dean.
My favorite scene he did was in "The Greatest Story Ever Told". He played a Centurion commander coming to JESUS for his servant. I have it on my phone and watch it often. He was a good man. 😢

Around the time this was filmed my parents and I went on a family vacation trip to Alaska. We were away from home for six weeks. We did a lot of camping in our conversion van on the way up and back. It was quite a trip. I wonder if he ever made it.

I met Ernest Borgnine not 2 weeks after my wife and I hosted a 'Marty Party'. What an unbelievably humble gentleman he was. What a great thrill and an honor it was.

Ernie thanked Burt Lancaster, for his lead role in “Marty” (1955).
Burt produced the film, and thought Ernie was perfect actor for the role.
He won the Oscar, beating out many stars his senior as well as James Dean.
What a great man we lost.
My favorite scene he did was in "The Greatest Story Ever Told". He played a Centurion commander coming to JESUS for his servant. I have it on my phone and watch it often. He was a good man. 😢

I could never go on a road trip with my father hes a miserable sob. Ernest is always teaching and explaining and smiling..wonderful!
Around the time this was filmed my parents and I went on a family vacation trip to Alaska. We were away from home for six weeks. We did a lot of camping in our conversion van on the way up and back. It was quite a trip. I wonder if he ever made it.

I laughed so hard I damn near fell out of my chair when he called a Prevost a bucket of bolts. One of the most expensive coached built in the US. Should have used a country coach.
+Duh Wolf He was referring to the motor home the film crew were driving and following him in as a bucket of bolts. In a lot of the vids you'll see what they're following him in and see what he's talking about.
