Truck Stop Borgnine: Ernest Borgnine Pays Respect to Truckers USA

  • In Iowa, Ernie and crew park The Sunbum at a truck stop along the way. His unmistakable voice and presence really livens up the day for road weary truckers. Ernie signs autographs for everyone, and shakes hands like a politician. Quinton McHale for President! "Remember, with this--and a buck and a quarter--you can get on a bus."

My father worked at an upscale restaurant in New Orleans for 50 years. Earnest Borgnine was a regular there, he would always insist on my father to be his waiter. They became good friends throughout the years and would always speak in Italian with my father right there in the dining room. I still have an autographed picture of him with words “to my good friend Sergio”. I remember my father saying that man had a handshake like a vice grip! And my father was a very strong guy himself! He looks strong, even his voice was strong in this video. They were both good men, I’m sure they are laughing and carrying on in heaven right now.

Yeah, you're so right. What a great generation. Growing up through the Great Depression, serving in the Second World War and Korea, raising a family under the shadow of the Cold War. Watching some of their beloved kids dying in Vietnam. They certainly never had it easy, but they helped each other and they always tried to pull through.
I miss all of my family members of that generation. I loved my maternal grandparents to pieces and spent a lot of my childhood staying with them at their house near the sea.
My grandfather was ex-Navy, having served throughout WWII in the Pacific theater. On warm evenings the cool sea breeze would blow through the house. He and I would sit on the lounge laughing, bathed in the black and white flicker of repeats of McHale's Navy. He loved the show rest his soul. It was sad that the brilliant Joe Flynn (who played Captain Binghamton) died at the age of 50. Too short a life.
It a shame that nearly all of that generation are now gone. They were a truly great generation. We can take solace in the fact that they do live on in all of us and in what we learned from them.
Ernest Borgnine I can still hear that wonderful, mischievous and infectious laugh now.
flirtwithapokerface - thanks for reminding me if you are still out there somewhere.

And, she stuck up a conversation with him. He recognized her Italian accent and asked where she was from ... she responded, New York. And, he broke out laughing responding in Italian, no over there. What followed was a 15 minute conversation in Italian. As a bunch of other parade spectators gathered around and watched & listened. That event was probably the biggest thrill of my mom's life.

I met this man when I was 13 years old and got to shake his hand. I'm 31 now and at the time when I was a kid I didn't know who he was I just knew my dad introduced me to somebody who I shook his hand and said hi.

Love Ernest Borgnine. He always seemed like a genuine nice guy. McHale's Navy was one of my favorite shows back in the day

Look how he takes the time - I watched Matthew McConaghey brush off people rudely before. He isn’t 1/4 the movie star Ernie was

Be careful out there Mr. Borgnine, there are crazy things going on in our country these days, and we want you with us as long as possible, I'm not sure some of the crazies out there will recognize you and some may not even care if they do because they don't have any American values or morals, God bless you Sir and thank you for all the great intertainment you've given us over the years, God bless you and your fine family.

I saw him in the movie "From Here To Eternity". Ernie played a tough guy in the movie. Stars included Frank Sinatra, Montgomery Clift,
Burt Lancaster etc. The film won eight academy awards .
Its an older movie, made in the fifties but well worth viewing.

I saw this documentary years ago and it shows how Ernest Borgnine ,despite being an Oscar winner early in his career, he never let it go to his head. He continued to be a true professional without becoming pretentious the way actors do today. He worked steady and was very dedicated to being a professional. At the same time he was a man of the people

This man is the top of what everyone in Hollywood wished they were. I just think he always wanted to work at his trade, and damn it, he can do it with more than most A liners suto stars. Point the way. Let him go. And I don't think he ever let me down. Thanks for the entertainment.
