Borgnine's competition that year was simply staggering: James Dean in a career best performance in East Of Eden, James Cagney in Love Me Or Leave Me, arguably his best performance during the 50's, Frank Sinatra in Man With the Golden Arm, a film that he regarded as his personal best, and Spencer Tracy in Bad Day At Black Rock, at the peak of his abilities; very moving and poignant.
Borgnine worked with Tracy on Bad Day at Black Rock; he tells the story that he read for Marty while shooting it and met Paddy Chayefsky while still in costume. Tracy was supportive and encouraging - and Borgnine beat him out for the Oscar.
Which goes to prove what a wonderfully consumate performance Borgnine gave when playing this role. A superb, poignant, professional and masterly performance which fully captured the essence of the character of Marty.

Ernest Borgnine was The lonely butcher, who after many disappointments, finally meets a lady who is intelligent and one who he can build a relationship with. Betsy Blair was perfect in her part as Clara. Esther Minciotti as Marty's mother was priceless "those college girls are just one step away from the street." Marty was such a heartfelt movie, a movie that we will never see the likes of again. Ernest Borgnine, although up against some tough competition that year, definitely deserved the "Oscar."
Would have LOVED to meet Mr. Borgnine -- What humility and graciousness. Same with the Duke: Mr. John Wayne. My name's Marty. I was 4 years old when "Marty" came out. I didn't see it till the 80s. Watched it many times since. Great dialogue and not a minute wasted. Hard to believe anyone would think Betsy Blair was a "dog".

Earnest was also a Chili connoisseur and lived in Oregon part of the time, hung out at the local Elks lodge or Moose lodge, one of those local lodges, might have even been the Water Buffalo lodge with Fred and Barney playing cards, just a regular guy and his acceptance speech demonstrates that, no pomp and circumstance no politics, just mom, dad, wife and producers. He was a great actor and a mans man.

Watching Marty right now, what a blessing it was to have Ernest Borgnine in our lives. The first Movie I saw him in was The Poseidon Adventure. From that movie on, I was hooked and a lifelong fan of Ernest Borgnine and made a mission to see all of his roles. One of the funniest moments on live TV with Ernest was during the 2003 Oscars with Steve Martin as host. Watching the opening here on YouTUbe, it's hilarious and Ernest made it even funnier when actors being panned in the audience as having had a relationship with Steve Martin, they panned to Ernest and he threw Steve a kiss! LOL!
Ahhhh yes! A bygone era when actors, films and movies were excellent, classy and worth watching. Grace Kelly was an absolutely elegant and beautiful lady who aptly typified the gracious queen of Hollywood. Ernest Borgnine was a superb actor and humble gentleman. I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Borgnine once when an eighteen year old sailor in uniform on board ship in SF harbor. He pulled up close by in his cabin cruiser and yelled out to us how proud he was of us and thanked us for his service as a Navy veteran himself. He had that wonderful ear to ear smile. I valued that moment and at seventy seven, I still do.
I can’t beloved he didn’t stand up there and speak for 25 minutes and list five thousand producers, directors, casting people and production assistants who all made this night possible!
Ernest was a terrific actor who played such a range of roles. One role that he was never - to my knowledge - interviewed about was as Ragnar in "The Vikings". It's difficult to get ones head around the fact that this was the same actor who had played Marty a few years earlier.
Wow that is amazing I always loved the pictures he was in but never realized he beat out Cagney Spencer Tracy Frank Sinatra and James dean that blew me away I never knew that and my grandfather and me would always watch McHales Navy when I was just a kid he love that show how I wish I could turn back time and to this day if I ever see the reruns of Mc Hales navy or any one of Ernest Borgnine‘s movie I watch them and remember my grandfather

I have a weight and food problem that I am struggling with now so I gained a few pounds since I was slim in my College Years and at other times in my life. Borgnine was such a class act. I was lucky enough to meet him at a Chillerthon in NJ about 2 years before he passed. Kind and loved life. Enjoyed just meeting people and talking to them Watch on TH-cam his video's while driving across the country in his RV. Just the nicest guy. I hear he had a temper, no shock there. His marriage to Katy Jurado and Ethel Merman (for about 3 weeks!) certainly show that side of him. But overall he was just a humble, kind man.

What a memorable moment in Oscar history!
Watching Marty right now, what a blessing it was to have Ernest Borgnine in our lives. The first Movie I saw him in was The Poseidon Adventure. From that movie on, I was hooked and a lifelong fan of Ernest Borgnine and made a mission to see all of his roles.
One of the funniest moments on live TV with Ernest was during the 2003 Oscars with Steve Martin as host. Watching the opening here on YouTUbe, it's hilarious and Ernest made it even funnier when actors being panned in the audience as having had a relationship with Steve Martin, they panned to Ernest and he threw Steve a kiss! LOL!
A wonderful actor, glad to see this posted at last as a fine tribute to him.

Ahhhh yes! A bygone era when actors, films and movies were excellent, classy and worth watching. Grace Kelly was an absolutely elegant and beautiful lady who aptly typified the gracious queen of Hollywood. Ernest Borgnine was a superb actor and humble gentleman. I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Borgnine once when an eighteen year old sailor in uniform on board ship in SF harbor. He pulled up close by in his cabin cruiser and yelled out to us how proud he was of us and thanked us for his service as a Navy veteran himself. He had that wonderful ear to ear smile. I valued that moment and at seventy seven, I still do.
A great actor and comedian. He is not afraid to joke no matter how hillarious or crazy it sounds. He is a straight up guy.
I can’t beloved he didn’t stand up there and speak for 25 minutes and list five thousand producers, directors, casting people and production assistants who all made this night possible!
Ernest was a terrific actor who played such a range of roles. One role that he was never - to my knowledge - interviewed about was as Ragnar in "The Vikings". It's difficult to get ones head around the fact that this was the same actor who had played Marty a few years earlier.

Wow that is amazing I always loved the pictures he was in but never realized he beat out Cagney Spencer Tracy Frank Sinatra and James dean that blew me away I never knew that and my grandfather and me would always watch McHales Navy when I was just a kid he love that show how I wish I could turn back time and to this day if I ever see the reruns of Mc Hales navy or any one of Ernest Borgnine‘s movie I watch them and remember my grandfather
I don't know why you are so surprised by that. Cause not gonna lie but Ernest's portrayal was heads and shoulder above the rest of the nominees.

Notice at 0:39 that Ernest Borgnine comes up on stage, laughs at Jerry Lewis, and hands something to him. Lewis (a good friend of his) had made a joke bet of $1.98 that Borgnine would win. So Ernest Borgnine got 198 pennies and put them in a sock. And he's handing the sock to Jerry to pay him off.

Earnest Borgninewas a U. S. Navy Gunners Mate 1935-1945. When people recognized him on the street he was always very cordial and warm to everyone and anyone.
I've watched "Marty" two or three times and lesson is don't let go the best of your life waisting your time with a bunch of losers (so called best buddies),move on and pull the trigger for much better things life offers ,that's what I think.

I haven't seen Marty in a few years. I was a Fat Jew growing up in the late 1970's so I related to the character. I have a weight and food problem that I am struggling with now so I gained a few pounds since I was slim in my College Years and at other times in my life. Let us say I relate to the struggles of Marty. I wish Ernest B. had thanked Paddy Cheyavesky for writing the beautiful story of Marty.

I agree about Ernest Borgnine's acting ability and his win of the oscar. Marty was a stunning movie and Ernest Borgnine was outstanding.
Ernest Borgnine, a wonderful, humble, and gracious actor. Grace Kelly was such a stunning, beautiful woman. Nobody could touch her class and elegance today. They don't make them like that anymore.

Nowadays the winner and presenter would be all smarmy with kisses and hugs but Ernest Borgnine wouldn’t think of accosting Grace Kelly in that manner. So much class back in the day. Also appreciate the speech is brief, sincere and not overly practiced. What a lovely man!

What a year for films, all of those were excellent
Borgnine was such a class act. I was lucky enough to meet him at a Chillerthon in NJ about 2 years before he passed. Kind and loved life. Enjoyed just meeting people and talking to them Watch on TH-cam his video's while driving across the country in his RV. Just the nicest guy. I hear he had a temper, no shock there. His marriage to Katy Jurado and Ethel Merman (for about 3 weeks!) certainly show that side of him. But overall he was just a humble, kind man.
