    We had a neighbour who as a little girl was friends with Bing Crosby. They meet while he was making a movie in Canada with Joan Fontaine. He would send wonderful letters to her, hand written, and gifts. He would talk about how he was worried about his boys and how they were getting older. Until he died she recieve Christmas cards from him. Sometimes the picture on the card was a movie he had worked on that year. Such as White Christmas!

      @@petertaylor3600 from what I have read, Phillip has defended his father and said that Gary’s book was “propaganda.” Gary has also apparently said his own book took some liberties and he tried to blame others for some of his problems.
      Now don’t get me wrong, it is documented that Bing did use a belt, cane, or something else in regards to discipline, but at the time it was an accepted form of punishment and it might not have been used as badly as described by Gary.
      That was also when they were younger, he could have changed as he got older. We don’t know the whole truth and never will.

    It is obvious that Bing loved his boys and was proud of their talent, what a shame that he had so much trouble expressing it. A lot of men from that era were the same, I think he had trouble showing his feelings to his second family as well but tried hard to be more affectionate with them (thanks to Kathryn's influence). @@MTknitter22 Kathryn tried hard to be involved with the first boys and done some incredibly nice things for them. Read her books, as well as the boys were pretty complimentary about her as well. Bing's sons were grown men with family's of their own when his second group of children came along, but he still worried, still tried to help and still loved his boys.

    • @mitzymoo3151
      @mitzymoo3151 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sunshine Baker It's very unfair to say the boys didn't have care from their mother, who by all accounts when well was extremely loving, kind and interested, even though she was herself a disciplinarian. She would go through periods when she was in control of her demons. This beautiful woman suffered from debilitating shyness, etc, and was not unhappy to give up her own career to raise her family. Let's have some compassion for this lady who struggled with the Hollywood lifestyle but still tried to overcome her insecurities. Her problems where not easily acknowledged or understood back then. Another point about nannies, etc raising children, it was a time when a lot of the big stars children's were raised or helped raised by relatives, carers and nannies. I am pretty sure, but have to re-check, that the oldest son's introduction to alcohol was actually outside the parental home.

      None of you ever had to deal with the fame and demands that fame brought with it. I don't excuse anyone in this. I assure you Bing loved his kids. He was not given an instruction book on how to deal with it all. He and dozens of other " stars" fell into the same trap. The stories are miriad. His wife was a raging alcoholic, therefore AWOL. He was typical of men of the day. Let mom do it. His kids also grew up in too much privilege. Another trap that destroyed the lives of many Hollywood kids. Gary was the worst of the lot. Very angry. Yes they needed their absentee father, but there are so many sad " black holes" in the fame and fortune story of America's star kids. Many made it through and just as many did not. Ieave all judgment to the Lord. We ALL have to stand before the judge of all the ages. How will we measure up. I attend to my own household.

Can we separate the private lives from the talent we as the audience were being given?? I'd like to....the rest is none of my business and I am just thankful that they gave us the talent you see here....regardless of the gossip....None of the so-called "entertainers" we see from early tv to now were angels and they never will be...nor were/are any of the people in the arts/dance/poetry etc....but why is it every time someone posts a Bing Crosby video, all this stuff gets dragged around again as if anybody alive today was actually there to witness it??? I'm sure Rosemary Clooney's kids had it hard too with her having a drug problem and nervous breakdown and divorce etc....but not much is said about her...why the double standard??? Can't we just enjoy the performance and leave it at that? I liked this performance by Bing and his sons...end of story.

    Those kids were a mess, it's very sad. Their mother was a very bad alcoholic and based on her history is not far fetched to believe she drank while pregnant. This of course can result in devastating consequences for a child. I have always thought they had some facial strangeness. Early on their behaviors were hard to manage and their father was mostly gone. I'm sure he whooped them, to little effect. As they aged their volatile behaviors increased and they led to their self destruction.

    It is hard for me to separate the Entertainer/Singer/Actor and the Person. On one hand, one of the top Entertainers/Singers/Actors of all time, but didn't treat his family right. His songs helped many people during the Depression and WW2 which cannot be overlooked and he must get credit for that, but this other side of him bugs me still. Maybe it shouldn't bug me because this is how life is, you did well and not so well. No one is perfect, especially a guy who plays other characters or sings on stage and made a lot of money, he was human just like me. I should let it go and go about my business.

      honestly, thinking about it myself for a bit and pulling from my own experiences with my family, I think it may have been something like this...
      Bing obviously was obviously a genuine persion by accounts of his friends. He cared very strongly about his friends, he cared very strongly about the soldiers who went to fight the Nazis. He wanted to spread good will, love and kindness to the whole world... and that was genuine, he did that... But I imagine when it comes to the people who are absolutely closest to you, its a bit harder... Maybe on one hand he doesn't want to treat his kids like the way he is in public because he didn't want to come off as fake...
      Gary would talk about how they would go on an hour or so drive to the studio, and bing wouldn't say anything... and as soon as they got to the studio, he was suddenly the person everyone knew and loved... I imagine its just hard to know what to say to those who depend on you most. Its also just them being around during the time he previously had to himself, so they more or less probably just see the unwinding process, which seemed cold and distant... but as Phil said... Bing absolutely loved every single one of them with all of his heart...

      One twin Dennis and youngest Linny were the ones who committed suicide, very little to do with their father but rather life choices and complications. All four boys were gorgeous and Bing and Dixie adored them. Gary had numerous opportunities provided for him but for whatever reason he never had a huge career, pity he was awesome. Only the one son wrote negatively, and whilst the other three admitted Bing's flaws, they mainly defended their father. Bing was semi retired when his second family arrived and he was able to give them a lot more of his time and attention, a thing he regretted about his four boys. Complicated family but a great family.

      @Sunshine Baker The money factor first. The boys received substantial trust fund money at 21. Cheques from investments made from money from both parents provided regular income to all 4 boys long after Bing had passed. So the boys had cars, homes, jobs, etc.. provided for them by their father. They were paid for their tv appearances and ranch work from what I've read. If 6 out of 7 children make defensive comments about their father, whilst admitting his faults and the one son who wrote the book later admits in 9 hours of taped interviews that he couldn't remember writing certain things because he was drunk at the time, I would think that the truth was probably somewhere in the middle. His first wife the beautiful dixie was apparently extremely shy and insecure, and it has been noted that her drinking problems began because of this. She didn't like being in the entertainment sector and was reluctant to appear even at functions etc with Bing. He gave up hard drinking for her, but she began a struggle that Bing and others tried to get her help with. A great lady who needed more attention than Bing provided, but who remained loyal, loving and honest. She should be remembered for the talent and beauty she was and not for her problems. Gary the eldest even acknowledged he could feel the unspoken love from his father and he made comments both to his stepsister, his ex wife etc that what was in the book wasn't really the way it went down and it wasn't the same book he wrote. Linny and Phil wrote lovely comments about their father, without sugar coating his faults. Even Bing acknowledged his faults and regrets about his sons. But the boys were no angels either and some of the stories I've read are eye opening. They were human, they were flawed but they were all talented, gorgeous people. From reading about them they were all kind, generous and good people, who made mistakes.

They had attempted another mommy dearest , only father dearest. ( There was a clip from one of these shows where its quite obvious the sons had hit the sauce.) If Bing had been the abuser the book claimed to make money, most likely his second marriage to Kathryn, would have been a failure.. They sadly died early from substance abuse problems . You need to read up about the money the boys had already received and were still receiving long after Bing's passing. He didn't disinherit they were to receive their will money at 65, and not out of any meanness but so that the money wouldn't be squandered. The boys had problems but were all good kind people as were their parents Bing and DIxie. Bing worked with and assisted his boys, that he would be jealous of their talents is quite simply a ridiculous statement.
