That sort of thing happened very early on. In the early 1980s I worked for a computer shop that sold mostly CP/M machines, but also carried the Franklin. This was a clone of the Apple II that was later found to violate some Apple copyrights and taken off the market, but it was an economical alternative at the time and could run all software written for the Apple.
After hours the owner showed us an amusing product he had run across: very poorly animated line-art porn. Since you couldn't guarantee what sound hardware would be installed, the authors used the next best thing for the sound effects: The floppy disk drive.
Not especially erotic, but funny as hell.

just checked 240p is ~3.7 megabytes. you can compress it further and lose some of the framerate to get it down to ~2.4. you could go below that but by that point you wouldn't even be able to tell what's going on.

8bit music the legit way
3.5" diskettes were introduced during the 16-bit era and were popularized by the Apple Macintosh in 1984, which ran on the Motorola 68000... A 16-bit processor.
The "right" way to do it would be 5.25" diskette drives introduced with many late 8-bit home computers or even compact cassette tapes that found use in many other 8-bit micros of the time.
Sorry to nit-pick, but the Motorola 68000 was a 32-bit CPU! It did have a 16-bit external bus though (much like the later Intel 386-SX chips)

It's amazing to see the start of the Floppotron. Things have really changed since the start, we're now at V3.0 already
Throughout the years of me using those drives, I often wondered if you could control the tones they make. Now I know. Thanks for resolving a question I've had for 25 years!

I am afraid that when your friends from IRA arrive, this database floppy storage station will be up and ready.
I'm so old I remember drilling holes in the corner to turn low density floppy disks into high density. 9 out 10 would re-format to high density and it was still cheaper than buying the actual high density disks. Of course I also remember the 5 1/4" floppy disk days when they were actually floppy.
My man! But I'm so old I recall using a hole punch to punch the other side of a 180KB Floppy to turn it into a double sided 360KB! And I still have them and they still work in my Commodore 128.

¡Memory unlocked! Damn I'm old af, but I remember watching my father doing that to floppy disks. I also remember the 5 1/4" disks, those were odd being so elastic. I remember the .arj files, the compressed files before .rar or .zip, and uncompressing them through MS-Dos. Time flies...
