IMHO, the finest blues singer of the 20th century. It's obvious the pain she still felt about how she was treated by the community of Port Arthur. Guess that's why she sang the blues so well..... she lived it.
The finest person in many ways, but the finest blues singers might just be the ones who invented it. The ones who inspired her and whom she admired enough to make sure they had a tombstone.(Bessie Smith might just be teaching Janis in heaven, and that might be heaven for them)
It’s pretty clear that she thought she’d return a star and finally show them all, but it only drummed up old feelings and sadly we watched her melt down as the camera rolled. Wherever you go, however you present yourself, you’re still you at the end of the day. It’s a tough lesson.
Exactly. It doesn’t matter how big a success one becomes. They’ll still think what they want regardless. That look that one woman gives her after Janis says what she thinks young people are looking for. That was the look of disdain. They would never accept her
Omg this is just breaking my heart, what a tragic world, people are terrible. Like life and people had broken her in a million pieces that couldn't be healed. You can just see her being so sceptical towards those questions.

It seems like most of us here are just chasing after those lost pearls that spilled down the streets of San Francisco so long ago. There's defiantly a community that still exists around the songs and the time period that Janis shaped. She's one of those people that, even though she's gone, the impression of her still shouts. She feels close enough to touch, but impossible to reach. I wonder if those who knew her felt the same way.
She had such a self-depreciating sense of humour. And Janis was lying when she said her parents were at a wedding when this was filmed. They were so embarrassed by all the media attention her visit was bringing, on top of her wild reputation that preceded her, that they purposely stayed out of town until she left. They also turned off the lights and pretended they weren't home. I remember watching it on one of those biographies floating around here on TH-cam. When Janis answers the reporter's question about what her parents think of her now, she looks at her younger sister, who says something to the effect of "they always talk about how exceptional you were, and that they agree, you should be here ", Janis says "Yeah, Mother? Really? She never told me that". They were always disapproving of her.
Ultimate dream of every artistic outcast from high school: To come back as an internationally famous star. The only drawback: the people you went to school with still sniggering about you in the background. Janis's facade of the ballsy rock chick crumbles here and she comes across, at points, like a too-vulverable hurt little girl. Moving but disturbing considering how soon after she died.
Janis faced her demons from the past just a shame she couldn't leave them behind - Thank u Janis for sharing your talent with the world you will always be in our hearts 💕

Every damn day of my life I was picked on,and even now I have zero confidence in myself. I'm 29 now but it still hurts. I have actually chose to work with animals rather then deal with the public,I still often feel like people are making fun of me,while dogs don't judge you. Back on topic-this is very heart breaking and people never learn
Try to remember it says more about them than anything. Try not to take what people have said in the past or in the future personally. They have their own issues. All they were trying to accomplish was to make you feel bad. It didn't really matter what they said or did then. If hitting a soccer ball on their head would have made you feel bad then that's what they would have done. If all else fails, try to pray for them. It is hard to stay angry at someone if you are praying for them.
Young people, especially girls, should learn from her and her entire, sad story. More importantly, WE should learn from this story. These kids need LOVED. They need honesty, respect... you know... human things. Social media has only damaged this effort.
This is the worst interview ever. She is so bubbly and confident in other interviews. The questions they ask her she cannot even relate she doesn't like sports. They know or at least have an idea how bullied she was. Yet they ask her questions that make her uncomfortable. They are practically mocking her. Why go back to a town that murdered her self esteem. These people are prude and rude. They are jealous of her success so now they want to bring her down for doing better. Before it was cuz in their judgemental "normal" eyes she wasn't good enough. I am disgusted. This brought me to tears especially when her answer was "no comment." I love you Janis. You are beautiful but I don't need to tell you that because you already know that.
Janis was awesome. I know I would've absolutely have appreciated her amazing soul and attitude if I had known her in high school. I think she was never appreciated enough.
I am a big Janis Joplin fan. I am friends with one of her lovers from San Francisco on her first visit. I've lived decades since she passed and as one matures your perspective opens up. Janis was a young girl who went through physical changes in high school as well as cultural. She was not attacked by everyone in the school. She was not looked at with disdain and discouraging actions by everyone in town. What teenager doesn't feel different or an outcast at some point. Just as Janis was an enlightened and free spirited young person in Port Arthur there were others as well. Once Janis had the platform of fame.. She openly attacked the city and it's inhabitants at every chance she had. This did not sit well with the people of Port Arthur. This did not sit well with her own parents and siblings. She also promoted openly , drug use.. which eventually killed her. She made a lot of youthful mistakes with her fame in her judgment. She paid the ultimate price for these mistakes. There may have been a small group that tormented her back in high school but it wasn't the whole town or the whole school. For people years later to still talk about them as one entity and put them down doesn't show much growth on the observer's part. I think had Janis lived and made the changes she needed to to survive... She would have found peace with her hometown just like her siblings have. IMHO
How do you know all this for sure? I'm old and I read books yrs back which claimed she was ostracised in school, and in Port Arthur. Did Janis personally tell you the opposite or what? If not, then nobody can be sure. ✌️
@@EllaJay To answer your question... I am very good friends with her former lover Jae Whittaker . I also have had conversations with her sister Laura. Laura and her brother Michael have publicly stated that Janis went through a turbulent stage in her high school years. Janis herself, invited much of the negative attention due to her actions. There was a small group of primarily boys that taunted her as they did many who were considered outcasts. Both of her siblings have stated that she also had a small and solid group of friends.

should have never gone back. If you can only be yourself, you have to let go of acceptance. She lived a real, extraordinary life. She was raw and she was real. She was an individual. And she was different. That comes with some pain, especially in her time. There was something beautiful in her, and damn did she turn some heads.
Who the fuck is this interviewer? He's trying to make her say negative things about either herself or her former classmates, who are listening to her right there. And he's asking her why and how she's different? What kind of question is that? How does somebody answer that without sounding either conceited or (the other extreme) having low self-esteem. Janis pulled through, though. God. I love her so much. She's so beautiful, in every possible way.

Been through bullying.. I know how she felt too. I can see her anguish through answering those questions. And I want to be a music artist, too :) She lived too shortly. But I'll always look up to her as one of the biggest artists ever lived. I hope to be inspired by her. She's so great!
May be another 10 years and she would've sailed those questions. I speak from experience.
And I been suffering ever since... so prophetic that quote was
IMHO, the finest blues singer of the 20th century.
Jesus this is so heartbreaking to watch. She seem so very sad when asked about her HS years. Many people are like that I guess tho. The Human Race can be so evil...
Kids are brutal for sure. #lordoftheflies But it's sad that a supposedly love-driven hippy couldn't transcend her bitterness and thirst for revenge. The scenario maps to Original Sin, imo.
Once you remove the dreadful and tragic background music that was used in documentaries using this video this event is not as bad as the media made it seem. People were out to shame her. She needed a support system not to go out and confront people when she was so weak inside .
@@BiLatKnee What thirst for revenge are you talking about?
@@RadicalCaveman I understand what Doug was referring to,What he meant is that Janis wanted to go back there and quote "Flaunt"her success in front of those who hounded and dogged her out but it horridly backfired
@@servicecorp8056 a tragedy.
I love her laugh and sense of humor. It's breaks my heart that she was so lonely and sad that she had to take drugs and drink so much. Plus she was bullied in school, like my son was.
she was a very special individual loved by everyone,it's shameful that she was rejected by her heritage. RIP Janis Joplin
She was 27 and she said"I remember when i was young". The biggest loss in rock n roll history, she will never be forgotten.
She's an absolute legend. Love this interview. You just don't get people like her anymore
The ironic part is she would never make it in today's music scene
After this question was asked at 3:20 she wanted to cry but held it in. She wanted like anyone wants was to be accepted in school and she wasnt and it hurt her. Poor thing. RIP
Janis was kick ass....she took it, the hurt and threw it back in their face. Their names we will never know but her's....well....💜🤘
This girl was in pain, the kind of emotional pain that longs for escape. Money and Fame do not buy happiness. I am so sorry that Janis felt she needed to drug herself to feel nothing.....What a great loss her death was.
Just love her raw deep raspy sultry voice. She seemed so real and down to earth despite her fame!
RIP Janis
Good footage, close-ups, Thanks 🙏
Feel her pain? She feels like I do.People are just vicious.I love that girl.
3:07 Poor Janis, her answer to that question was everything.
SHE HAD ENOUGH BALLS to go to that reunion and face their classmates and throw them on their faces her success :),I think she was misunderstood by those people but when she tested pot and singing she got liberated, still misunderstood but liberated of the sad chains that those people made her carry for a few years in her past, also she seems to be a funny person to drink a bear and laugh :)
Drink a bear ??? 🐼 LoL!!! That's cute...
she tested a lot more than pot
@@austinstevens7736 Didnt like Pot ...It made her ,,think,, too much... Sayd by her personal assistance in an interview after Janis died....
going to this reunion was her biggest mistake
This is such an iconic interview. As many commenters already pointed out, you can hear the pain in her voice when they brought up her school years. She was so vulnerable and unguarded, it' wasn't her fault people didn't like or understand her. She did nothing wrong, but paid the emotional price for being different. I'm so glad she found music and became so famous. It feels great to see her here giving that town the " finger " with every word she speaks.RIP Janis, we all love and respect you and you're accomplishments.
She goes in so happy and positive then she's just shot down by them. They were jealous of her and narrow minded. She's so vulnerable here.
janis, baby.......i hated high school......my class mates were assholes..... i had a lazy eye..... so i was labeled as a syclops or moron...etc...... so i left that area......moved to maine..... i was treated like an equal and i found my soul mate....so happy.... i just wish you were here...... drugs suck girl....!!!! i miss you...!!!! i kinda feel connected to you.
I love her laughter. It's communicative !
Contagious
alot of small towns are like this.... i really feel for her
Somewhere janis joplin is still laughing like hell...she did indeed have the last laugh....rock on janis baby queen of blues rock to this day...RIP...😻🌻❣❣🌷🌷🌹🌹💋💋💜🖤💜🖤💙💙❣❣
And as the old addage goes, He or She who laughs last, Laughs Best.
I definitely would have asked her to the prom. Aint nothing wrong with being different.
Different time, different era. In the late 50's, if you were "different," you were an outcast. Times have changed and so has society. I would bet to wager that you probably wouldn't have asked her to the prom due to the way society was then and the peer pressure you would have experienced from the others.
Take her to the prom? Hell yeah, why not? But bringing her home to meet Grandma. Well, that would be …. interesting!
@@mr.memories9621 bullying is still very present !
That to me is such a crock, Proms were not a big deal when I was in High School, and they're still not I didn't go to mine and I could care less.
@@servicecorp8056 then you are a total loser LoL... I managed mine back then eventhough it's hard LoL... ive got my inferiority complex too in highschool but i learned to accept my past weird life after i met Jesus... everything was great in college days...God gave me a bestfriend who was one of the popular kids that day, that made me one too LoL
The blues comes from pain, and you can see her laughing through the pain. It's heartbreaking.
High School... it's enough to make you wanna sing the blues.
Aww..deeply touching...such a sweet, wonderful fragile soul she was.. ♥
Pay back time from Janis, and much deserved. Rip baby.
So sad, what a great loss
This is such a painful video :( .
#2021 HERE! Babygirl, Janis 💗💗 much love to you!! You are dearly missed and remembered for EVERYTHING. You’re creativity
50 years ago... sweet Janis. I love you Little girl blue R.I.P (10/04/2020)
Always be kind to the different ones.
She had no idea how truly incredible she was,
and would inevitably remain... forever.
I can't but love this fantastic woman...The way in which she laughs is simply amazing XD
she was in such pain and had such low self esteem and she only wanted to be loved and accepted. Port Arthur turned their back on her but the whole world accepted and loved her. may she RIP. Janis was the best female singer I ever heard and only wished Joe cocker and her would have teamed up for a duo!!!
I agree!! watching her be interogated by that prick of a reporter is heartbreaking!!! She just looked so hurt and vulnerable, beneath the surface laughter. I love this beautiful, exceptional woman who sings with such raw, honest emotion.
Like she said on the Dick Caveat Show, "They kicked me out of school, town, and the state." YOU ought to be ashamed of yourself Port Arthur, Texas..PEARL WAS ONE GIFTED SINGER, DANCER, AND SHE SEEMED TO LOVE THE WORKING CLASS AND WAS DOWN TO EARTH..ONE BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING..WOW...WOW...🤔🤔🤔😐😑😐😑😎
@zjkrone I feel the same. I was not around when Janis was alive but discovered her when I was in High school and pretty much felt what she did.
Same
Try to remember it says more about them than anything.
@@jamest681 well said I agree with that now
Young people, especially girls, should learn from her and her entire, sad story.
More importantly, WE should learn from this story.
These kids need LOVED. They need honesty, respect... you know... human things.
Social media has only damaged this effort.
amazing woman, such vulnerability.
She seems so sweet
So much pain is conveyed in her responses
Obviously her past in Port Arthur haunted her...and made her rebel.
Dion St. Michael fuck you
This is the worst interview ever.
Brilliant post, Callie.
It is so painfully for her to talk about her younger times at PT. Arthur. Shame on all of you who put her thru this time.
Janis was awesome. I know I would've absolutely have appreciated her amazing soul and attitude if I had known her in high school. I think she was never appreciated enough.
I was a landscaper at her home in port authority in my younger days, working for MARK STILES.. Best job he had to offer..
You could tell that reporter just wanted her to act like she loved to make the town look better.
so sad, those that tormented her will answer, she achieved more life and love in her short 27 years than any of those squares she went to school with, janis its 2022 and your still loved for being yourself nobody remembers the Jerks you went to school with but the whole world remembers you darling
jimmy johnson actually accomplished something in his life too, but at least he lost 62-7 in his last game, maybe an FU from Janis

should have never gone back.
If you can only be yourself, you have to let go of acceptance.
She lived a real, extraordinary life.
She was raw and she was real. She was an individual. And she was different.
That comes with some pain, especially in her time.
There was something beautiful in her, and damn did she turn some heads.
She is a legend. Who are they? This was so sad to see. RIP, Janis.
Obviously those reporters couldn’t tell their line of questioning was making her uncomfortable.
What do you love most about Port Arthur?
She should have said, “LEAVING.”
They all should've came up to her and apologized to her and congratulate her on her success at their high school reunion but instead they continued to be the jerks they always were. Now i hope that they regret behaving like a bunch of prejudice jerks. Rest peacefully Janis. YOU ARE LOVED!
@@honeybee-k9z I'm so sorry you had to endure such. You are a great person to forgive.

A was a remarkable beautiful soul ❤️
Jim Morrison was in love with Janis Joplin.....
Who wouldn't?
Yeah he also attempted to SA her too which Janis rightfully rejected him
I imagine she was extremely nervous aboout attending the reunion, behind the bravado and humour, i think she was anxious about seeing people in her past who had been horrible to her. You could tell she was sad when asked certain questions
I grew up in PA ans we lived 2 doors away from the Joplin's. Janis was our babysitter. I had fun growing up, but I had friends. To not be stifled by PA small minded ideas, one has to leave the area and spread wings.
it’s evident how badly her past haunted her. people get upset with her knowing she went back to such a cruel place, but i believe she was just trying to face her demons and past in order to heal and gain closure. that’s all she wanted, yet they kept digging deeper and deeper to the point where she broke. poor angel. wish people weren’t so cruel. there’s nothing wrong with being different. if they’re not harming you, why harm them? whether it’s physically or mentally. she’s heaven sent. i just don’t understand.
oh Christ,poor girl! R.ip Janis Joplin(1943-1970)
