HAVE i TOLD YOU LATELY THAT i LOVE YOU? Richpin, your videos are a source of comfort in a world made of plastics and steel.
a lot of things factor in also. Staying clean and organized. Unexpectedly, bolts, tools and parts can break. Then there is traffic or waiting for mail delivery. Weather is always an issue. Rich is also videoing this stuff, that itself can be a nightmare. If you have a family to raise that is definitely an issue of time. If you want it done to perfection you need to take your time to get it right. Good job Richpin !!!!!
This video helped me so much to replace my timing chain thank you so much for making my good boy francis be healthy again
Glad i could help.
Just wanted to say thanks for the video. I own a '96 Saturn SL2 and need to replace the idler pulley. Your video helps me understand what is involved in this procedure.
I made several repairs and fix a few issues watching your videos. Thanks 2002 Saturn SL1
Rich, I love watching your repair videos because you are so methodical and organized. Great job on this video.
Some times your past revisits you. My first gig in the industry was at Saturn from 2001-2003. Then I moved on and been specializing on European cars since. My gf's sister just get her car a 2001 SL vin 8 with. Blown head gasket due to failed pump. Thought these cars were behind me, thanks for the vid brought back memories...
Hi Richpin,
Just removed and installed cylinder head 2 times within a month on my 1996 Saturn SW1 which has 261,000 miles and wanted to thank you for your excellent video showing how to remove the cylinder head. First time I tried to repair my cracked cylinder head with JB weld (oil going into the coolant) which did not work, so second time I installed a rebuilt cylinder head, and as you would say it's now "purring like a kitten".
Great video. Just completed this job. Replaced valve guides and engine mount while at it. Really helped an old carpenters confidence.
I recently replaced a cracked head on my wife's SL1 and followed the manual carefully and this video to help interpret some sticky points. Fantastic video!! Here are some things I learned along the way.
1. Didn't remove alternator. I can see how it could have made removal of some of the intake manifold nuts easier, but I don't think that's a necessary step.
2. Timing chain. I went ahead and replaced it. Every repair manual I have walks through installation based on the 2 timing marks. Every after-market timing kit comes with 3 timing marks. I struggled on that, and couldn't find any documentation on the third timing Mark. I ended up counting links and making my own timing Mark with a drop of nail polish.
3. I am very hesitant to use a tap to rechase the threads for the head bolts. I've seen too many destroyed threads this way. I used a gun barrel swab, bore cleaner, and compressed air to make that channel as clean as possible.
4. The pulley on the drive shaft. Mother of God that is hard to break lose.
5. Good opportunity to replace front seal, clean out air injection system, and egr channel passage.
Nice work. I'm in the middle of the battle right now on my '97 SW2.
You're awesome Rich, I love your videos. Extremely thorough and full of great information as usual. Keep them coming
Yes it is the same block. The automatic transmissions are different as is the computer to make the transmission work.
Most jacks have a metal head and the oil pan is light metal so we use wood because it will not deform the pan.
I would highly recommend you replace the valve covers gaskets on your sc2 because of the fact that if the old ones do not seal you could get oil down the spark plug wells.
Big job, we were waiting for
Awesome video rich, as always!
Remove the crankshaft pulley, transmission stiffener, lower the exhaust pipe remove the pan bolts and cut the sealer on the pan then remove it.
richpin, thank you so much for yet another great video!
Wow Rich.. I always though a SOHC head gasket job was the one major thing missing from S-Series maintenance videos. Now here it is. You're getting awful close to having an entire S-Series video service manual. :) Glad to see you're still working on Saturns occasionally!
One hose goes to the evap purge solenoid i am not sure about the other it could be the egr if you have 95 or earlier.
Important Update: Jan 1 2013 there will be a new richpin channel for all future videos.Richpin06a channel will be solely for all the Saturn lovers out there.Should be a lot of fun so stay tuned.
This video will help me out a lot so I can check all my timing chain parts. Do I have to take off the water pump to get the timing cover off ? I`m thinking of taking that mount bracket off to have more room since this is my first time ever attempting major internal engine repairs. I'm more nervous of the ultra grey silicone bead than anything.
Good question, can you do a leak down test and confirm were the lost is.
On the block i use a razor blade on the pan i use air wire brush.
I am glad you like them.
gonna love this one, just acquired a 02 sl1 and just changed out all engine and transmission mounts as well as both torque thrust mounts. all were bad. when replacing the engine mount, i noticed that the timing cover is cracked where the mount is bolted to it. crack is from fwd mount and migrating towards the center mount. also crack can be seen on the fwd face of the engine cover.. oh, to find a replacement cover,,off to the junkyard and use you video as a guide,, thanks rich.
I have a 1998 SC2 with the 1.9 DOHC engine and I need to replace the Valve Stem Seals, but there is no video showing the procedure and I like to watch a video before doing a job....can you point me toward one?
thank you for the info what is best way to get rtv off it since there is no gasket?
Great Vid as usual. Great to see you back..
The timing chain and sprockets are different because it has two camshafts.
Hey do you have to remove the water pump to complete the job I'm having trouble getting the last two bolts on the side out.
Hey Rich, when I insert the 1 x 1 x 2 inch block of wood to support the engine, do I put the wood under the strut mount only or push it so it goes under the back part of the strut support bracket also ? I don't mean to sound so technical. However, I know how important only a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch or so can make on these babies.
Well done !! Cant wait for pt 2
Great video! I know you work on "everything", but please continue making Saturn S-Series videos. Again, great video!
Great video as always, if it weren't for you I would not be driving. On this video I noticed
oil had gotten into the coolant and I have the same problem so I am going to replace
the head because you suggested a cracked head and you are the Saturn Guru. My
question is can you make a video on how you removed all the oil from the coolant system
please as this has become an all too common problems with Saturns. I'm working on a 1998 Sl1, is it necessary to change the radiator?
Rich, what tool did you use to free the coolant temperature sensor?
@jtk159 I tape the bolts to the parts i take off when possible and the ones i can not i tape with a number corresponding to my sheet of paper with the number steps on it.
The wood is under the strut and push back to the bracket.
What types of tools would be absolutely necessary for a job like this? My wife's 97 Saturn has a blown head gasket and possibly bad piston rings. I would like to get in there and fix it all at once, but need to know what tools I may have to buy before I delve into this project. I have a good deal of tools and I know at a minimum I'll need to get a hold of a torque wrench.
Richpin, this guide has helped me greatly. I just replaced a head gasket on my 01 sl 1.9 sohc, due to oil leaking from the pressurized oil supply to the head (just behind the water pump.) Everything cleaned up nicely, I couldn't fit any feeler gauges under a straight edge on the block deck or head surface, and I followed the torque specs exactly using new bolts. The oil leak was gone for 80 miles, and now appears to be just as bad as before. I'm suspecting a possible blockage in the head, giving the pressurized oil nowhere to go, but there are no noises associated with lack of oil to the valvetrain. What gives? Have you ever come across this issue? Any advice?
what are you trying to do jack the whole car up with the oil pan? You pull the jack head off or throw a piece of plywood on top of the head if your so worried about getting a dent in your oil pan.
Really enjoy ur vids, keep them coming
Any advice on a 2002 1.9 dohc? I can't get this crankshaft pulley off and I'm worried about messing something up
I own a Saturn sl2 2002 for 6 yrs, has 176k miles and would like to get it rebuilt. How much would you charge rich?
A leak down test should be able to narrow down the problem.
Hi there, could you please tell me something?.... If I go to replace the timing chain do I need to replace new gasket on the top engine cover? My car is a saturn sc2 1999
I've replaced the water pump in my '99 SC1. Was this a problem of coolant not circulating around the engine or low coolant because of the leak?
Rich: I'm replacing just the valve cover gasket on my '99 SL1 SOHC. My local parts store carries both the "RTV + bolt grommets" do-it-yourself RTV gasket replacement kit, as well as a Pre-Formed rubber gasket for the entire circumference of the cover. I didn't know they made the pre-formed gaskets for the SOHC (obviously they do for the DOHC) -- Which gasket would you recommend for the SOHC: the RTV-only style, or the Pre-Formed rubber gasket? Thanks - Italo
We can't seem to get the crankshaft pulley bolt out, we have air tools and nothing. Any sugestions on what else we can do?
Ur vids helped me alot and learn alot from u. Thanks :-)
Hi Rich, Would just re-torquing the head reseal the head gasket?
Tony
Besides the torque wrench it just basic metric sockets and box wrenches.
Great video as always Rich; looks like that car was run pretty hard before you got to it!
Yes not a lot of maintenance.
do i need to remove all those parts to replace only the water pump by itself ...?Rich
I thought it was easier the way i did it here but leaving the head on is not to bad ether.
Will these instructions work for a 97 sc1? I'm mostly concerned with the timing and disassembly.
I wish bolts came out easy like your bolts. This job takes a long time, plan on spending the whole day if not more.
Unfortunately I don't have a leak down tester. But another odd thing was that the spark plug wells on cylinders 1 and 2 were completely full of oil and also were the ones with very low compression, I wonder if it has any correlation or just a weird coincidence. Also for the brief time I drove it on 2 cylinders it had what sounded like detonation during acceleration.
hey richpin love all your videos good source of direction when im stuck. hope you have a video of the saturn subframe removel.thanks richpin.aloha from hawaii
Removing the subframe was one of the things on the Saturn i have not got to.
I just got passed the timing cover. I fought with the cover for a good 1.5 hrs before I found the upper of the two "center bolts". I jacked up the motor a few inches to make it easier to access. Crank pulley bolt - took some effort as my compressor is running off a 70' 3/8 hose. I had to crank the pressure to 170psi.
@stormer1092 I consumes a quart less than every 500 miles. But I've checked and can find no oil burning.
The engine leaks like a colander though. It could use a re-build, if only to clean the block and replace the gaskets.
@ItsAlwaysRusty if your talking about when he took the water pump off, its was mucky and nasty due to oil getting in the coolant from the blown head gasket
I do not work on them that much but i will see.
Is the crank pulley the same s the power steering pulley?
Great job ...wating for part tow
Well I ended up taking the pulley part off. For some reason my engine will not move strait up when I raise it with wood under the pan. Tricky to get the cover out. I have not a clue how to get it back on with RTV on it.
The diesel sound was from a stuck plunger. I can only close it in and out by applying pressure to the lock up wards and when I let go it locks in any position. Found tiny broken guide parts in oil pan with metallic like sludge ?????????????
You do not have to remove the water pump to remove the timing cover.
I have a 92 sl2 with an odd compression problem, it was running perfectly fine until I stopped at a red light and it started missing really bad. I got home and looked into it and cylinders 1-2 have 30psi and 3-4 have 125psi. It wasn't overheating and the timing looks fine. The fluids aren't mixed at all and were all full and clean. When I took a wet compression test I got 125psi on 1-2 and 250psi on 3-4. That would seem to indicate pistons/rings but why would that just happen all of a sudden?
looking forward to part 2
@richpin06a i want to change the valve cover gasket but do i have to drain oil 1st? I ask cause i dont want to make a vac by opening the to like i did the tranny valvecover gasket., and is there a torque spec for the bolts(i think T20) tht hold the cover down?
Hey, I have a 96 SL2, and was wondering if it is relatively the same process to remove the DOHC head.
I have a 98 SL1 and I want to take out the intake manifold because it has a lot of build up. I was wondering if I can just take the manifold out without moving the motor to the from and/or draining the coolant?
Thanks!
Coolant flow through the intake so you will have to drain some.
You don't need to lift the motor. But it is a lot of work. You also have to disconnect the fuel rail. You might want to replace the orings on the injectors. I've got mine off right now because I'm replacing the head gasket.
thanks man!
What would cause high vacumme pressure from intake to pcv???
About how long would what you did take to do and whats the estimated cost on an 07 ion?
@RandallFlaggNY oh check the tail pipe for any black material and move it in your hand and if it streaks its oil.
On the S-series they are quite different.
Just wondering how long in real time did this repair take?
Excellent presentation
rich I need some advice I have a 01 sc1 that has oil mix in oil pan but what puzzles me is I also have intermix in overflow tank I do know it has a head gasket leak but is the intermix in res tank contributed from head gasket also or should I be looking into a cracked head issue thanks look forward to your response
+Jamy Dill I do not no why but i have seen heads crack on the SOHC engines. It is possible the engines were overheated at sometime.
Hey Rich. Hope you can help me out. 1999 Saturn SL1 with the sohc 1.9. I have the "oil in the coolant" condition (VERY light coolant in oil underneath valve cover) and I am assuming it's the notorious cracked head. Oil pushed out of the coolant reservoir. The vehicle didn't run rough, nothing through a red flag indicating anything was wrong until I noticed oil dripping on the ground. My question to you is, if I pull the valve cover and take a peak, is there a common area to possibly see a crack? And if I need a head, do you recommend any online place to purchase from? Thanks in advance.
There is a picture of a crack in this link www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134205&highlight=cracked+head+SOHC
how did they cook it was it overheating before?
Hi rich, I need to replace the valve stem seals on my 2002 saturn s series
Is it absolutely essential to remove the timing cover and cam gears?.
Not if you want to spend $2000. for the oem tool that lets you keep the cam gear(s) in place.
I like to put the rtv on the engine not the cover.
Cant Get my exhaust manifold back on over the studs any suggestions??
All s-series were made in Spring Hill,TN
Hello, Rich
Debra Jackson: I have an 1997 Saturn SC 1, my coolant is mixing with oil with a milk like substances forming in the cooling container. I don't know to get it flush first, or check the themostrat or check head. Need help.
Wow this was a great watch for me, even though U do not have a Saturn.
You must have the patience of a saint... you never swear or slam shit all pissed off trying to work on these things. You make it look so easy!! What would a typical garage charge to replace a head gasket?
+Todd Gilmore I am not sure the price for a head gasket replacement but it must be a pretty penny.
Hi .. i am putting my car back together and cant figure out where a tube goes.. if u go to ur video at about 8:53. on the part that says V4088 on that part there is a rubber thing that 2 tubes come out one goes down behind and the other goes ( no idea forgot) i broke the tube and replaced it. can u tell me where the OTHER tube goes. please please help me
Definetly Waiting on part 2 :)
awesome tutorial man,thanks.
Nice video Richpin! I have been using your video step by step to remove my engine head off a 1996 SL2. I finally broke loose the crankshaft bolt to get the pulley off. I noticed in your video when you pulled yours out it was dry (no oil wanting to leak out). I started to unthread my crankshaft bolt out and it started to leak oil so I quickly threaded it back in so I would not have an oil mess everywhere. No I have not drained the oil from the engine or removed the oil filter. Am I in trouble? I believe there is a seal at this location, is it possible that is bad? What would cause it to leak when I pull the crankshaft bolt out? Thanks in advance.
It is quite normal for oil to come out when removing the bolt check out this video
smg.photobucket.com/user/eljefino/media/crank.flv.html
richpin06a Whew! I didn't think I had a problem but because I started to over think it I thought I did. A video is worth a million words! Thanks so much.
I'm doing my head gasket now and I had the same thing happen. I then drained the oil. When you take out the bolts for the timing cover be sure to get the two "center bolts" my cover has an arrow pointing to each. If you are really fighting to get the cover off - then you have missed a bolt for sure.
She is all back together on my end. I am working through a misfire on cylinder #3 which I think is related to the coil packs and ICM. Still trying to figure it out. Arghhhhh
HI I HAVE SATURN 1999 SL1 WHIT 170K MILES
WHET I CHECK COOLET A SEE
oil in the water container is colored black lead
tecture is like the milkshake
the car does not overheat and no smoke
car is running fine at this moment
i read on the Internet that may be a crack in the head
is there any way to fix this without changing the head?
sorry for my English
My 1998 SW1 coolant reservoir is filled with motor oil. Bad head gasket, or cracked head?
+sjagain I have seen a few sohc like this with a cracked head.
@RandallFlaggNY really...! You have some good luck. I always see those things burning oil.
I personalty like the pre formed gasket
hello rich i'm wondering on how to remove the oil pan in a 94 saturn ??
Hello I have a 1999 Saturn sl2 DOHC 1.9 I was wondering if the steps in this video would be the same on my car
Seeing you have a DOHC and in this video it is a SOHC there might be some differences.
No just let the engine cool down that will give the oil time to drain back to the pan.SOHC 22 ft-lbs DOHC 89 in-lbs
that coolant was nasty! nice vid!
where can i get the tools to pull the connectors? thanks
