As a guide I also get this question a lot. To help newer divers understand I tell them, your depth is shown by the water directly overhead. It is not regulated by sea level or elevation. If there is 3 meters above your head when you go up in the swell and there is 3 meters over your head when your under the down swell, you are at the same depth, it's that simple.

Good video. If you are holding your position the the 3; 6; meter or whatever stop you use it will be the same with the swells.
