I learned by experience that ascending slowly from the safety stop to the surface has an impact on not getting tired after the dive. But yeah, on recreational dives what I see every day is people doing ascents very fast. And from the safety stop depth they usually shoot up to the boat as fast as possible :)

Great comments Achim, as a divemaster in Florida its amazing how often I see dive instructors and other divers with tons of certifications sprint to the surface after a safety stop. As you stated the largest expansion of gas takes place in that window - would really like to see more emphasis on this along with buoyancy control on the accent. Keep up the great content! Cheers

Hi, I'm just a recreational diver looking to go tech dive this summer and that video just change my vision of deco. It's so logic! Thanks.

Love the topic. I think part of the truth is that the closer you get to the surface, the more the inaccuracies in buoyancy control will show. It may be optional for recreational divers but it's good practice for sure.

Can other federations pitch in on this?
"recreational diving means I have no decompression requirements?"
Decompressions are perfectly allowed in our recreational diving federation. Not sure about others? Apart from that I completely support the main idea mentioned in this video

Explained very well great points on a safety stop

So true. There is no need for deep stops on recreational dives. Indeed they actually just increase overall tissue saturation. And as you say, the last few metres are where you will undergo the greatest proportional pressure change and really need to slow things down.

Not ISE certified, yet consindering to adopt minimum deco in my recreationalish dives, where no deco obligations are mandatory.

Interesting discussion. It does not make sense to stop at a depth where slow tissues are still on gassing. This is where the low Gradient Factor in Gradient Factor planning comes into play.

Thanks Achim for posting as always. On any dive deeper than 15 meters I ALWAYS hold on a safety stop. With DSMB deployed. For me, it’s great practice in terms of those times I’m holding horizontal in the water column when I’m sitting on an OC deco cylinder for 30-40 minutes with DSMB deployed in swells. Which messes with holding absolutely stationary within one meter. I dive a conservative profile and strive for a nice curve otherwise. Controlled descent, controlled ascent.
With that said, what I see in terms of what the other kids do following the safety stop? Pop to the surface like a Polaris missile. What do I see on the boat afterwards consistently? Nose bleeds. Folks shrug it off as in “Meh, it’s part of diving”. I take that as a sign that their body is trying to tell them something. Any thoughts?

I agree with you... A slow curve is a great technique to make diving safer. We like to decelerate quite a bit between 6m and the surface. There is however 2 advantages to the standard 5m-3min rule. It is easy to teach and remember to less serious divers, and it is better than popping all the way to the surface at a silly speed.
I would like to know your opinion on the classic "Pyle" deep stops that was taught a few decades ago. Perhaps a future video...

Suggest you read "deco for divers" by mark powell😊

@@tiago.matias I read it a few years ago. It's on my list to re-read... I have also been following Dr Simon Mitchell's teachings on GFs. When I learnt Deco Diving, "Pyle" stops was still a common thing. Not so much anymore it seems.

Hi Achim, i'm a oc diver and have started with technical diving. I realise more and more the huge benefits with a CCR. I would like to hear your thoughts on "caustic coctail" and how to prevent it. Is there a safe way to avoid it? This is a important though when it comes to my decision of investing in a CCR. I really enjoy your content. I have learned a lot from your videos. Keep them coming 👌

    Thanks for your video Achim.
My question is: How do you know that the saturation of your tissues requires you to do a deep stop or not (without using a dive computer)? Is there a rule of thumb to calculate? For example at a 60m dive: With a bottomtime of 15min is a deep stop at 75% of your max depth required? What about 10min bottom time at 60m - deepstop required? How does it change if you dove the day prior? I mean my dive computer could tell me but this is only a backup since I do my deco on the fly calculations.

Your philosophy seems to go along with what was written Deco for Divers. Decompression/saturation is dynamic, do you think the recreational model for stops is over simplified?

This is how diving was done safely in the early days, it is obvious but some so called trg agencies teach rapid accent to first safety stop in order to maximise bottom time. It is not a good idea (TDI yes thats you) 👌

Might not be the highest tier but I personally think that Audio volume and clarity definitely suffice.
