    I just moved from Hawaii to the PNW. I'm excited that I bought a home with a few hydrangea plants but had no idea how to care for them. I just watched 3 videos from others who talked about deadheading, pruning, new growth, old growth. I had no idea what they were talking about until I came across your video here. I love your enthusiasm and all the info you provided. Excellent video! I'm going to watch all of your videos now. House cleaning can wait! 😁

    Thank you SO MUCH for your hydrangea videos and explaining the difference between deadheading vs. pruning, old wood vs new wood, etc. I'm a hydrangea newbie and it was so frustrating hearing these terms and no one was expanding on them. Everything is crystal clear now! Thanks again!

      Ok, we now know we totally screwed up our hydrangeas. My husband was cutting the WHOLE PLANT back to the ground in Sept. once the leaves turn completely black from frost. We get huge lush green bushes back in the spring, but no flowers. My question is, do we just leave the plant go from now on, even with those black dead leaves?

    Sometimes, that’s all a person needs, is to hear someone say not to stress. I’ve been stressing about when to deadhead. I realize now that what I did last year, was I pruned two of my plants instead of deadheading. I’m going out to deadhead this morning, things will look neater. Thanks for giving me that extra push and confidence.

    So excited to have found your channel! I’m a newbie to flower gardening. Hydrangea are my all time favorite flowers and I planted two of them! Unfortunately, here in MA, it’s been so hot this summer, my beautiful blue blooms are now green. Still pretty, but not as pretty as the blue. I’ve done my best to keep up with watering (despite a ban), but I’m afraid it’s just been too hot. I had hoped they’d stay bluer longer.
    This video was SO helpful to learn when and how to deadhead. I’ll be sure to this in the Spring. Fingers crossed next year’s blooms will be just as plentiful.
    Looking forward to many more of your helpful and easy to understand gardening tips!!! 💕

    We bought a home with the biggest plant I’ve ever seen, she is old. Can’t believe I didn’t kill her. Anyways, past 8 years I have seriously over pruned. Last year I didn’t touch the plant and this spring I did what i just saw you do (I don’t know what inspired me). Now she has more budding than ever! All the stems are standing! Perhaps no more flowers laying on the ground, we have super strong stems this year. I need to sub ‘cause my wife loves those huge white flowers. Teach me lady, teach me.

    I’m British and lived in the US for many years trying to make a UK garden with plants I grew in temperate England….big mistake….. in Maryland close to DC where temperatures are far from temperate winter or summer.
    I pruned a number of different hydrangeas the same way not realising that some bloom on old wood, some on new. Wish I’d seen this video before. I did eventually research the problem and had many lovely blooms on the variety of hydrangeas growing happily in the semi shade of my deciduous garden trees! Back home in soggy UK the same is true…know your plants flowering habits!

      I usually leave my blooms in place for winter interest except for the giant ones . Those I try to deadhead so the snow doesn’t sit on them and cause the branches to snap .
      You can deadhead all of them if you like that look better but I would not do a heavy pruning this time of year ( early fall)

  • @fullofgracestitches
    @fullofgracestitches 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Can you also deadhead blooms that are still fresh to use in bouquets? Will this help to get repeat blooms? I have two medium size hydrangeas, one with no blooms (no blooms last year either), and the other with just four blooms on it. We moved to our house last summer so I don’t know the history of these hydrangeas, but would love to have more blooms! I just watched your other video about not pruning hydrangeas at all so we’re going to try that this year. Fingers crossed!

      Hi Gina , terrific questions👏👏👏🤗🤗
      Here is a video explaining why you may be getting green leaves but no hydrangea blooms
      LUSH LEAVES BUT NO BLOOMS?
      ➡️ th-cam.com/video/CTM5EVtqK3M/w-d-xo.html
      This video explains Something I call winter zap and may explain why you are not getting blooms .
      WINTER ZAP - WHY ARENT MY HYDRANGEAS BLOOMING ?
      ➡️ th-cam.com/video/Q9t0uykceB4/w-d-xo.html
      The answer to your question about deadheading them for vase flowers is yes you can . I often bring big bouquets of the fresh blooms inside my house and gift to others or sell them in my floral shop. When we cut the fresh blooms from certain varieties we are encouraging new blooms to form . The plant stops trying to form new seed when they are deadheaded and spends more energy creating stronger root systems , lusher leaves and new blooms .
      At the end of the season, you can leave the last set of blooms in tact so they protect the new growth of next years buds . You can simply deadhead these blooms in spring . Good luck 🍀 🌸🌸😊

    Hi I brought a fully bloom hydrangea in May of this year. It already had 8 flower.. I watched your video and you advised to cut them once the were spent, which I did sometime in June. I repotted it & added some compost ( Garden Scape mushroom compost, to be exact) to the soil. And from the it began to grow taller/ fuller with most beautiful foliage. From the repotting I expected it to put out more blooms because the description that was stuck inside the soil said that it blooms into the fall. My question is was I nieve to believe that it would bloom again at the end of the summer? And should I give it fertilizer before it goes into dormant for the winter? Remember this is a potted hydrangea 😊

    HI and thanks for your videos, I have a 30 yr old climbing hydrangea. It sits like a canapy. I have to trim in early spring because it gets too heavy.. But underneath the canopy is lots of old wood with thick hard to trim branches. I have tried to get throw them but sometimes I have not been able.. A few. pieces could use a very strong person or a saw? I think if I could trim it it would fill out underneath. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks again for all your info you share!

    Apparently the only thing I do for all my plants is dead heading. It drives my mom nuts because she likes to prune things down. But she killed my Endless Summer Hydrangeas so she's no longer allowed to touch them lol.
    My only question is if I'm doing this when the flower head no longer looks good is that ok? Because that's what I usually do.

    Hi, I’m a massive (blue) hydrangea fan living in the U.K. midlands. We traditionally leave the heads on all winter to help protect the plant from frost. Do you get frost where you are?

    • @catmadwoman6317
      @catmadwoman6317 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But isn't she 'deadheading' in the spring (in this video). I'm in the UK too and have many different types of hydrangea - wish I had a blue - some can be cut back at any time.
      (edit) whoops, it looks like the person I answered has deleted their comment. I wasn't talking to myself (honest).

    I have a hydrangea shrub in a container, it's been growing happily for many summers, this year it grew so much that it blew over and toppled the container, I guess it's about time to re-pot it, I'm concerned that I'm going to kill it if I do. Another problem is that it constantly needs water because of it's size, and I'm wondering if I've overwatered the roots as some of the leaves have developed brown curly areas. Thanks.

    In Georgia we had a very hard freeze in January. Now in June my Hydrangea has a lot if leaf growth near the base but ALL the long stems appear woody, dry and brittle. Should I prune them all back or hold out for later summer blooms. Last summer the Bush bloomed nicely by June

      Ahhhh I love this variety of peony . I would not freak out . As you said , they are very hardy plants and I bet your peony will survive . Baby it a little by making sure it has proper water and maybe sprinkle a little compost and bone meal around it to keep it happy .

    In the autumn when the heads are dying, mine still hold shape and some colour so I cut them for dried flower displays. They are really long lasting for that. Then there are no dead heads in the Spring, but I do prune the plant also.

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      You can deadhead in mid summer . You are actually helping the plant not have to worry about setting seed by deadheading the spent bloom . This will allow the plant to spend more energy on root development and will help the plant stay healthy . Super hydrangea question

  • @kaciwright8547

    So you deadhead in the spring? It’s summer now and I have some dead blooms but am wondering if I should wait until spring?

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Super hydrangea question. Yes you can deadhead them now in simmer but clip them just below the spent bloom so you don’t cut off any of next years blooms on your endless summer or nikko hudtamgeas . You can cut the stems longer on Annabelle and limelights hydrangeas since those blooms come in on next springs new growth
