    Thank's for the great tips! I have a huge old hydrangea that has gotten so 'tight' with woody growth... I'll be doing your recommendation next February.
    I have to add.... I took a trip to the U.K. two years ago... oh what beautiful flowers you all have there! You are so lucky you do not have to deal with the
    horrid heat that we do in the southern U.S. Throughout the U.K. everyone grows the most gorgeous flowers... they were absolutely amazing!

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey David. Yes we’re really lucky we have such a temperate climate here in the UK. Means we can grow a staggering amount of plants compared to other regions. You’ll be amazed by how much your hydrangea will thank you come next summer! Happy gardening! Lee

    Thank you SO much for referring to a season instead of a month. I get frustrated at gardeners on here saying things like "What to plant in July" when this is the coldest month in the southern hemisphere.
    So, "late winter" was very helpful. Thank you

    Thank you, Lee, for this great tutorial. I've moved into a new house and the previous couple had lived here for 50 years, working on their garden. I think about it like I have inherited something that needs to be preserved, so I'm trying my best to improve my skills. I'm a bit late for the hydrangea (not February!), but it looks much like yours does in this video - same amount of new growth in late March

    Wow, the buds are already that open in England in February? My hydrangeas are far behind and I am in northern Italy. And we had a warm winter. Judging from the comments (and videos) people post on TH-cam this winter has been warmer than usual everywhere, from Finland to Canada.

  • @jaythompson7149
    @jaythompson7149 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Lee. In Southern Ontario, here in Canada, I always pruned hydrangeas just before winter set in. Usually October/November. No new growth ever appears here until about April of the next year. We have a lot of the really old "snow ball" variety. I trimmed them back by about 1/3 to 1/2 and the result was never disappointing. Very different climates, yours and mine! Your videos are always very informative and I really enjoy them. Barry is adorable, and you have beautiful teeth! Hugs, Jay

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Jay! Thanks for the comment. My teeth are all my own haha. Plants like Hydrangeas are super tough. Obviously in insanely cold places like Ontario you will need to wait a bit before pruning them but in warmer climates late winter is when I prune mine. They always then put on a good show! Barry’s doing fine. Just need to teach him how to dig up weeds now!! Haha happy gardening!

    Thanks for YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS I have a couple of these hydrangeas , one blooms two flowers the other NONE at all . Thanks to you I see what my problem is , 1st they’ve only grown approximately 21/2 ‘ tall and I’ve done no thinning of these bushes, so they are tightly packed ( no room for air ) it’s the end of October here in Detroit so I’ll wait until spring to open up the plants and with your tips they should start to grow taller and bloom ( like others I see in my neighborhood ) also one tip that you deli not cover ( from what I’ve read ) coffee grinds help the plants maintain there original purple or pink colors instead of turning white ( mine have retained there purple hue , the few that I do manage to have bloom )

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bruce. I’m so glad the video guides proved helpful. Pruning and mulching are your two best friends when it comes to shrubs. I’m not sure coffee grinds would make that much difference really but it’s an organic mulch either way. So give it a whirl and let me know how you get on. Happy Gardening! Lee

      Hi Contantin. You’ll be fine. Some people claim waiting til spring helps protect new buds from frost but I’ve never had any issue with hydrangeas and pruning on Jan. They’re tough shrubs. I almost pruned it to the ground as it has shoots growing low and lots at the tops. I thought I would have to take off all the upper ones and just leave the lowest. Now I've thinned it out and given it a haircut but not as severe as it could have been. THanks

    Hi Lee, I pruned my lace cap and mop head (both in pots) in February, they were looking very promising until we had some very severe frosts recently here in the Cotswolds Worcestershire, the lovely new growth looks extremely frost damaged mid to top end, any chance it will sprout new growth from these damaged bud areas if I cover it with fleece until the last of the frosts for our area have finished, I know it's a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted but I can but hope LOL, there are new buds sprouting toward the base of both plants so covering with fleece would at least protect those. Thanks for all your useful tips, it's great to watch someone with your knowledge who doesn't over complicate how to get the best from the garden.

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Deborah. Frost can be a pain with all shrubs and can damage flowers. Yes defo fleece them to protect the other buds. You’d be surprised at how resilient they are. So don’t give up hope! So glad you’re enjoying my guides. Happy gardening. Lee 🥷🌿

    In Canada in zone 3 I think our hydrangeas look like this at the end of April or beginning of May! I pruned my hydrangeas down like this in mid April, removing about 1/3 of overall size when I saw the leaf buds nearly breaking. The buds have not broken yet. I hope I did the right thing.
