5'4 125 lb fighter here. I appreciate all your videos and insight Gabriel. I just won my 3rd mma belt on Saturday, and your tips as well as your videos on how to increase our breathing efficiency helped me a lot. Thank you for everything you do! Great content
@SouthPaw bro 155ers walk around at like180-195 I'm not going to deal with that lol I have trained with Chad Leprise it's a bit ridiculous how much they cut I walk around at 155 rn and while competing amateur I'm gonna stay between 135/145 for but 125/135 if I go pro. For example TJ and CCC walk around like 160-165 but I don't want to add 10lbs and cut more
@Karma𓆸 nah shorter guys should have as much weight while having good stamina. Just not to the point their stamina gets ruined cuz short guys need more stamina to win.
I'm also 5'4 but at 185 pounds. I practice boxing with family and friends. I never took it seriously enough to cut weight, seeing everyone is pretty much under 170 i'm starting to worry am i fat

Stocky guys represent. I'm also 5'4 and 146lbs. I don't look like a bodybuilder, but somehow I'm heavier than i look (everyone assumes I'm 135lbs lol). Since where I'm training, I'm the shortest guy, getting used to training with bigger guys has become a requirement.

As a short fighter at 5'5, Ive won fights against guys a head taller. I would never let them get out of my reach even if i take shots too, overhands have so much power plus if they cover those im in the body hitting that liver. Now I also had a fight with a guy 6'3, we had 2 fights first one I lost I wasn't aggressive enough, second one I closed distance and landed some mean overhands. I had him on the ropes and he couldnt escape and he was getting punished and I won by k.o. Long story short, if your short you need stamina and be able to throw power shots for a long peroid of time. Skill is king not height.
im learning this now, im 5'7 135, and sparr wit guy 5'10 or 5'11 & have more reach, i started to relax more and be more aggressive at the same time and whenever i hit them they start to respect the power and back away, now im trying to build cardio and stamina so i can be aggressive more and apply more pressure
5’9” here but with short arms and legs and a long torso. A lot of this is basically what I do. I also put a lot of focus on lateral footwork. Where many people like to move forward and then backward, I will move forward and then to a side after whatever combination I use so that I am staying close and can quickly follow up with another combination while my sparring partner is adjusting.
5’7 here very short n stocky Found that countering the jab while dropping low and moving in for body head combo 6/3 is magnificent Then you just wanna stay low and keep pressuring rolling all the time and fugging that liver up with power hooks to head and liver They hate it and its awesome Also inside low kick whenever the throw also nice
Short and stocky here 5’5 190-183 lbs I always watch Tyson or Canelo for my boxing my whole life and short mma fighters my coaches always said I’m built Compact and stocky so yeah power came natural but I hate that I always gotta be so close to do damage I always get tagged comin in
The top short-height champs had very good bob & weave--I just saw a pacquiao fight and he dodged the majority of his opponent's punches and won. Tyson also had great defense. Thank you a lot! Im 170cm 80kg and im almost always the shortest guy by 5-15cm. I have problems getting inside without getting controlled by opponent jabs. These tips will help me alot if i just master them!
Sir, I've been training amd competing on an amateur level for more than a decade now and this video still improved my striking game by about 150%. I was aware of most steps you mention here, but I was never able to put them together until I watched you breaking them down. I am incredibly thankful! Thank you for your work and your advice.
Thanks for the vid Gabe! I'm 5'7" and fight at 170. I'm usually the shorter fighter and it can be very difficult when I have to fight opponents that stand 5'10"+
What should my fighting style be? I took up wrestling as kid due to my stocky build and massive calves. I also played soccer for almost a decade so my stamina is amazing. Now I’m older and I have slimmed down but still have my stocky build at 6’0. My fingers almost touch my kneecaps, so I may have a 70+ inch reach. I practiced boxing for a bit but my coaches always wanted me to get close so it never suited my body type.
Thanks for this. I’m 5’11 and 205-200. I want to go LH, but I’m very short for the weight class. But also more muscularity developed. So this vid helps a lot.
Thank you for the excellent tips. Been sparring with taller guys in my gym. They're giving me all sort of problems. I could really use these tips to improve my fight game.
At 5’4 this is brilliant to help me understand how I can utilise my body better, will be interested to see the oversight one as well as I’m in that category as well
same here, it feels like a boss battle and I’m able to strategize better lol. Against a shorter fighter I have much less experience being the longer guy and utilizing those techniques associated with that.
Yeah, it's so much easier to duck and roll under their punches, and slip to the side. When i face a shorter guy, i don't have alot of access to good head movement, and have to use my arms and legs and attacks for defense to keep them away, along with long guad and slight pull backs. When you're shorter you can slip and duck and roll, go in and out wirh your feet, and block/parry punches and kicks way easier, i feel.
That's sometimes a problem for me. I'm short so I've only fought taller folks with a few exceptions. I'd hate to fight someone who fights like me, like a little skittish cockroach
After a lot of videos, I think I’ll put you right next to GSP in terms of fight knowledge and analitic power. You really put your brain into it man, congrats.
Great video ! Thank you for that. You are very right in your analyse. A shorter guy must move a lot and use head movement to get close, and once he gets there, start to throw those combos. Mike Tyson was a master in that art.
When I was shorter I had trouble getting in anything other than low kicks and would have a hard time against tall fighters. Then I got tall and now the shorter fighters are too quick or maneuverable for me to catch with anything special.
What should my fighting style be? I took up wrestling as kid due to my stocky build and massive calves. I also played soccer for almost a decade so my stamina is amazing. I agree with everything but the front kicks/teeps. I'm 5'5 and usually have good success using Teeps defensively that are timed at the same time as my opponent strikes. As a short fighter, my teep is my longest and safest weapon to use against bigger opponents.

I have a big problem with taller fighters when we spar. I’m about 5’8” and over half the guys I spar are at least 5’11” up to 6’4”-6’5”, and it’s extremely difficult to get inside. More of these videos please lol! What kinds of kicks to use or how to em corporate kicks into our combos would be good. I’m big into Tyson but he wasn’t a kickboxer
Thank you so much Gabriel!!! This is the d¡video I was searching for so long. I am exactly this type of fighter so I want it to understand how can I get advantage of my body and his limitation. Really helpful. Thanks Pal.
Put a lot of work into a lead uppercut, throwing it almost like a jab, being able to throw it by stepping back. You can generate a lot of power especially as a shorter fighter by stepping back with the weight on the rear foot, swivelling your hips like your slipping. It also sets you up for heavy cross/overhand or hook.
Great video. If I may, I would suggest you do a video maybe on covering physical attributes, in general. It might be helpful to do that before you do one on taller fighters. I see from the comments that most people are pretty clueless what it means to be taller or shorter.
Awesome stuff. Being only 5'8 this confirmed a lot of things I had been wondering about. I've had to naturally adopt a style with a lot of head movement as I attack my opponents to get in without getting tagged too much. Straight on approach always ended in eating jabs lol
As a short king i find it easy and effective to land lowkicks from punching range. Throw a leg kick instead of a right hand every now and again. Frustrates opponents when you can land both punches and kicks from the same exact distance.
I think a modern day example of a short stocky fighter who utilizes the outside to catch taller opponents coming in is Gervonta Davis in boxing, and Alexander Volk in mma. I always find that method more interesting than pressuring in.
5'3" and anywhere between 160 and 170. I used to compete in bodybuilding. Using calf kicks to get close for overhand rights and body shots seems to be the key.
I’m 5’5 and at a comfortable weight of around 175,185. and with serious weight training and I have weighed as much as 208. I really want to get into kickboxing really bad but I’m holding myself back 😅
Stumbled across your videos by complete chance, have never even watched kick boxing and muay thai before and I'm hooked. Your videos are very concise and informative, have since seen some of your fights and are both entertaining and enjoyable to watch. Learning about buakaw and lersila through your videos are also great, congrats beating lerdsila BTW and your plan going into the fight was well thought out including sticking to it and not falling into the trap with the taunts etc which definitely payed off. Keep up the great content, and best of luck with all future endeavours! 👍
Well i seem to be an exception... Im 179 cm and almost 90 kgs with short legs, short arms and a long torso... but due to having 70cm circumference quads my kicks shatter enemy guards and destroy their legs.... But what ofc is harder as a shorter fighter with kicks is landing it... You cant just throw em from range but rather should stack them up after pressuring the enemy in a corner OR when they make a move at you.... and faking and feinting like hell.. i agree with being on a lower stance and more agile... really appreciate this content
I think the biggest advantage of being shorter is physics. I get to put my whole body into punching up to the chin instead of across or down. In other words I get to push off gravity.
I'm somewhat fortunate, I think. I'm a shorter guy for my weight class with a definite reach disadvantage with hands but disproportionately long legs. It really helps me challenge at range and makes getting in much easier. I really get sewn up badly by the clinch though (practice, practice, practice).
Very helpful. As a shorter fighter I don't think the clinch is a disadvantage but then again I haven't fought alot of muay thai fighters. Also when I did tae kwon doe I enjoyed push kicking people. Its not so much im fighting at the wrong range but I'm discouraging my opponent into getting into my range. No matter how long your arms are they aren't longer than my legs. It won't help you finish fights and leaves you open for takedown but it does do something in the way of helping you move the towards your own pacing and makes your opponent rush in.
Varga you got some great material. Can I suggest a topic? make a video on basic counters. i think itd be a good one. good job though, keep it up. 100%!
Thanks for the idea! I'm working on something similar right now but I'll put together a full video as well because the one I'm working on is fairly short.
I'm 5'10 but stocky as heck. Boxing at Cruiserweight. I've found that I really have to train hard to be fast and precise. I usually only have a short window after evading a strike before a bean-pole pivots and moves out of range. I've also had to learn to be okay with taking hits to the crown of my head and stuff, because it's inevitable that a tall guy will hit me. Honestly, it's frustrating and I have been considering just cutting super hard till I'm tall for my division.

I always find that method more interesting than pressuring in.
best channel on youtube
5'3" and anywhere between 160 and 170. I used to compete in bodybuilding. Using calf kicks to get close for overhand rights and body shots seems to be the key.
Tanks for looking out for us bro
Saenchai is an exception to all those point lol but he's unique
indeed
That man is just built different
A funny alien from the 5th dimension. Maybe that's why he's so fast because is warping through space-time
Yea i think its him and how his gym teaches its style since he passed a bit of it on to lerdsila
@@riceboybebop7018 actually him and lerdsila were both training at jocky gym (the gym who created that style). They were training partner :).
Awesome video man
dude im 5'6 and i needed this. im switching to dutch guard cuz the thai guard aint working for me. iron mike z. is a case study for us stocky guys.
this video is gold
I’m 5’5 and at a comfortable weight of around 175,185. and with serious weight training and I have weighed as much as 208. I really want to get into kickboxing really bad but I’m holding myself back 😅
Why you are holding yourself?
Thank you for this awesome videos
Maybe one about Average Size and Strength, but good Cardio?
Please elaborate on more videos on short stocky fighters. This seems to be a big problem. Thank you!!
Thank you sensei for the lesson.
awesome content, great looking out. THANKS... OSS!!
Amazing video learned so much
Thanks champ! Always practice the dutchie
I love this man
I think the biggest advantage of being shorter is physics. I get to put my whole body into punching up to the chin instead of across or down. In other words I get to push off gravity.
Im shorter than CCC, so imma bring handgun or parang to a fight, but thanks for the tips man i knew more how to move forward
Great video. I'm a short fighter myself. 5'10.
That’s above average height bro unless you are competing against welterweight’s and up.
💀
@@GabrielVargaOfficial yeah man! Looking forward to it :)
more speicifc would bee even better love it so far
Sylvie von Duuglas-Ittu is a rare example for a generally shorter clinch and muay khao fighter, you should check her out.
Food will also help on core and deep striking prove me wrong clean food equates to ALL pistons pounding!!!
