And I’ve always wanted to tell you this: even though you lost the Van Roosmalen fight, you showed the heart of a lion during it. The correct answer if you are a tall and lean guy is to simply show up to beginner classes and let your ego flourish. Maybe being taller isn't as insurmountable an advantage between two skilled opponents with a height difference, but amongst beginners it makes you nearly bulletproof.

Reach is definitely an adavantage. I find it funny that some people think the clinch favors the tall man. I guess in some instances it does favour the knees of a tall man but a good clincher can just as easily neutralize a tall mans clinch and dump him easier.

I'm not sure if you still need advice but if you do I would recommend you, depending on the sport, to use your footwork to escape any off-balance punches that could ko even a dinosaur and try to establish something like an algorithm. Like when jon jones conditioned DC with body and leg strikes then fired a head kick. And try to fight at your perfect distance because your strikes will have more power. And in case you need something for bjj or wrestling, use takedowns that are based more on technique than strength such as trips or judo throws, be comfortable with the guard and drept half guard and go for submissions such as anaconda, d'arce, triangles, inverted triangles and guillotines
I hope it will help you or at least find something useful 😅

just a small thing to note that wasn't mentioned in the video. One really good technique to train for taller lengthy guys (im 6,1 fight at 145) is working the clinch. Coming from a muy thai gym I've had to drill clinching and realized that it can be used to discourage guys once they get inside and is really good for keeping defense as well ESPECIALLY if you don't have the best head or foot movement to escape once shorter guys explode inside. It allows you to temporarily stop their offense and for you to either break off and regain range or use offensively theres so many options once you start to feel comfortable in it and combined with the tips in the video you'll be controlling distance in fights much better

i Thought that, when i shorter skilled guy comes to me i always struggle on short boxing range and i receive tons of body shots so getting good at clinch is the way for us

Great video and tips. This is definitely me. 6'1", 160 lbs. I've been following all of your tips. I can't remember the boxer right now, but I remember watching a tall boxer with wicked hooks. His shorter opponent kept trying to close the distance, but got punished with hooks every time. It turned into a one sided fight, even though according to resumes it should have been a pretty even match. Thanks! I would love to see more on creating angles as a taller fighter. I have a good gas tank and quickness, but trouble figuring out the footwork for creating angles in my combinations.

When I first started my goal was to not get hit so I almost moved like point sparring only from a Muay Thai stance. It wasn't until almost 2 or 3 years into full contact sparring that I started to stand My ground and eventually became more of a pressure/volume fighter. I think that was only possible was because I learned how to move backwards and defend first.

I'm at this phase now. Whether it's been karate or Muay Thai & kickboxing, I've been having to constantly alternate between being an outside counter fighter and a pressure fighter.

I really like the side kick + plus long gaurd tip. Plus, the advice of learning multiple gaurds to deal with the different distances.

Im a 17 year old fighter at 190 cm but 2 years ago i was 175 cm so ive had to transition from a average/short (in my country) fighter to a tall fighter so I also had to change my fighting style and this video was really helpful!

i know this isn’t about mma but a lot of people don’t understand there are advantages of a tall and lanky build in the ground game too. having longer limbs gives you more leverage and the ability to position uniquely on the ground. the leverage you can create with this body type allows you to create space to escape while defending and generate the power needed to submit your opponent on offense. positioning and control potential is also huge advantage as the extra length in your limbs will allow you to wrap up an opponent and force transitions by creating space. you don’t really control an opponent using the traditional weight distribution method either, but by tying them up with hooks and awkward angles to limit your opponent’s movement capabilities.

Thanks so much for this. I've been using quite a lot of these techniques already but have just started working on that Thai sidekick. And my inside game? It needs work but I'll get it eventually.

I've absolutely loved this series but it seems to have reached the end of it's course since you have covered each archetypal build. Perhaps you should cover less conventional builds. I myself am of average build but with abnormally long legs and short torso for my height. An interesting example is Kevin Lee who is 5'9 with a 77 inches reach
