This episode was my second Ah-ha moment for Michael Scott(first being office olympic ending). Ryan hurts Michael, but Pam's art saves him. Dysfunctional family saving each other.

Great episode. Once I found out Joss directed this episode it made a lot of sense. He didn't write it but the moment between Pam and Michael reminded me so much of the sentimentality in his work which I always felt like were NEVER too corny. Like the speeches between Giles and Buffy.

I'm glad you gave it a 5/5. :) THIS is the episode in which I really started loving the character of Michael - the fact that he came to Pam's art show and was so genuinely sweet just melted my heart. Why? Because I'm an artist and I relate to Pam on many levels for that reason - which is also why the "motel art" comment made me angry/feel offended. AND it's also why I didn't like Roy's comment about Pam's art being the prettiest. Yeah, it was sweet, but it's something I hear constantly from my family and I'm weary of it. It's like, yeah, I know you're trying to say something nice to me, but it's an empty compliment. I'd rather have people tell me things like "The colors you used are pretty" or point out a detail they like.
ANYHOW XD Didn't mean to get so personal here, but like I said, I adore Pam's journey and I really liked your review of the episode. ♥

    • @christianzombievampire

I love Pam because I feel like she’s a great representation for the average girl who’s sort of shy, but as the series goes on you see her not only work on her assertiveness but sort of blossom into a fuller version of herself - she knows she’s sort of timid by nature, but that sometimes that holds her back and so she does what she can to advocate for herself. I especially loved her speech to Jim on the beach and how she stood up for herself after coworkers brushed it off as a drunken mistake, even though it was super awkward. Sometimes it takes a lot of awkward moments to fully become confident in yourself and learn to overcome your fears of others’ judgement.
I definitely project onto her as someone who’s also been pretty timid my whole life but tried to be more assertive, and honestly Pam is a great role model, as childish as I feel saying that 😂, but by the end of the show, she’s not always successful but she can learn from mistakes rather than going out of her way to avoid any possibility of risk and I admire that

If no one had ever seen the office before and wanted an introduction episode, I think I would show them this one. All the plotlines are brilliant, the ending is amazing, and it doesn't have too much Jim-Pam stuff so if you've never seen an episode of the office before, you would mostly be able to understand the plot.

Steve Carell is truly a talented actor... Michael Scott can make you hysterically laugh, then make you cringe, and then bring joy, or sadness. His interactions with Pam & Ryan in this are so pivotal to their character growth... Pam grew... but Ryan did not.

A bit of parallelism between Ryan and Pam that I just noticed: Ryan only brings Michael to his class to get extra points on his grade, and Roy only comes to the art show to "score points" with Pam.

business school deserves more respect as a true objectively top 10 episode of the series....it has a nice balance between an a, b and even the rare c plot somehow all intertwined and fit naturally into its shorter scenes and cuts so its one of the very best scripted episodes imo cause it does not waste time on dragged out scenes in on location or with pointless talking heads or cringe dialogue... it all flows well so you can fit in a third plot which is rare , it has feels an laughs but above all else it has michael being every shade of mike he can be in the episode..this is 7 sides of mike for sure..he goes through every phase in this one second to second so....an thats the point of the show so..

Actually, im not sure paper and dvds are as obsolete as people seem to think.
I used to think paper would eventually go away, paperless doesn't actually mean without paper. It just means that you try to use less paper.
Some things just aren't the same in a digital format. Also, some people like dvds and books as part of a collection.
Streaming has also developed in such a way that if you don't have the right streaming service, a blu-ray/DVD might be the better choice.
Back to paper, Michael's commercial, I forget which season, perfectly encapsulates all the different ways you can use paper.
Pam's drawing is another. For me, sketching on actual paper is easier than having to use my stylus or mouse

There are people out there who just scroll and find any videos to comment hateful and nasty things on a video they have no interest in. Those people are the scum of the Earth and nothing they say or think even matters. I know some people on You Tube can have thin skin but no matter what someone says to you or about you means nothing because look at who it is coming from. This episode means so much to me. I had an art teacher in high school that reminded me of the tamer sides of Michael- awkward but kind, a lot of people said he was weird but he was always one of my favorites. His first year teaching was my sophomore year.
Aside from his off the wall and kind of random sense of humor, what I remember most about him was that he liked my art. He genuinely, truly liked my art, even when I was just a freshman and wasn’t super good, but I tried my best. He kept some of my projects, hung them on the walls (along with other students), if I was working on my own art during class he would ask about it. During my senior year, I had his class again, and we had to draw an animal from a reference picture. It was almost my mom’s birthday, so I picked a photo of her dog. My first draft was on a smaller piece of paper, and it was messy, scratchy, and stylized, just trying to get the proportions. He stopped, looked at it, and said “I like that one. It’s got personality. Can I keep it?” And I said of course. It meant so much to me that a professional liked my art enough to keep it, to display it. And seeing Pam have that “he likes my art enough to buy it” face hits so close to home.
I also always hated that Jim never showed up- I knew he was with Karen, but I also know that they’re still friends and it felt out of character for Jim not to support Pam when it meant this much to her. Knowing that it was because Karen specifically told him not to makes a lot more sense :)

it is odd how john and rahsida were dating between the season 2 and 3 filming and early on in season 3 and then how they broke up around the time the branches merged in terms of filming and had to fake being in love on screen still well into season 3 lol..awkward as hell..no wonder why she left the show when they wanted her to stay one more year...and its weird how they wrote their romance into the season in the first place...kinda wish they kept jim and pam separate for another season...it always felt to early to have them get together in season 4 where they had very little story ...i kinda wish season 4 is when they got together slowly during it instead of off screen...

Dwight went to the X-men academy, of course he would believe in the supernatural. And about Pam art, I think we can say that it is not courageous, but it reveals how Pam is able to see beauty in the ordinary. It reveals how she is able to see the best in people and how it translates into her art. She becomes more self centered once she is with Jim and thus her art becomes more about grandeur and big projects. I probably see too much in it.

6:57. Explaining art is one of those things that's best when kept simple. I did a few shows last year, and all I did when people asked was give the facts: why I drew/painted the subject I did, and some techniques I used if they asked. But I let them get their own interpretation out of it. Honestly, I could never really give a concrete answer if they asked about a particular meaning or message
