  • #TheOffice is one of the greatest shows of the 2000s! I’m reviewing every episode with some background, trivia, the deeper meaning, and more. Today, we're looking at the #Women's #Appreciation episode.
Michael takes the Office ladies out to the mall so that he can redeem himself after making light of the flashing incident. This entire episode is full of sexual innuendo, sexist remarks, and sexist metaphors. Dwight’s pervert poster bit is awesome.
Thanks to our NBC overlords for their creation and ownership of the Office. The clips used here are for reviewing and education.

@Regina - Yes! I didn't even get into that in this episode. I was glad to have one not about their relationship, so I may have overlooked it. But that is such a good moment. I don't think Pam is talking about Karen and Jim when she said that "maybe you just don't belong together." But Karen totally took it that way.

This was a great episode for Pam as she can break my heart so easily with that voice of hers talking about not needing sexy lingerie but her housecoat for towels. Then the talking head about Roy and Jim which is sooooo good . Then she changes the tire with no help. And the prank on Dwight which was all Pam. I think she is sooo great and the episode on the whole is a 4.5 for sure! Also the advice given to Michael with Pam and Karen talking about their own relationships is so very subtle but dead on.

Sexism is like, more everyday gender stuff, like shaming a woman for using a skirt. Things people think are "normal", and when you complain is "just the way things are".
Misogyny is more intense, like when someone truly dislikes people for being a female for example incels discourse that women are futile creatures looking only for money and good genes.
Let’s say that Karen did use the term very loosely, I only use misogyny when is something very serious is happening.

    • @elizabethlee2136
      @elizabethlee2136 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

We also forget that while misogyny is more prevalent and damaging... sexism can be used against men. In that if you restrict mock and strong arm men into sex based roles... that is a factor. I mean I know people hate the term patriarchy but both are necessary to maintain a lot of these institutions.
I think its important for men to express themselves, in defying gender roles, or they feel the only way to express themselves is doubling DOWN on gender roles.
Like the guy who thinks he is a great dad because he doesn't let his wife pay any bills, even though their constant screaming matches have lead his wife. Or functional alcoholism, or treating girls like nuns, but not using scare tactics on boys.
Sexism can also apply to more nuanced depiction of gender. Such as how transgender people and nonbinary people can be treated so differently and usually for nothing more reasonable then, they might win olympic medals or boys will sneak into the ladies room. (which they do now... so why do I care) Which will become more prevalent as society changes. While Women are Women, you can't deny that transwomen have different sexism.

I don't know why it resonates with me, but being concerned for your daughter's feelings is just the sweetest thing ever. The reality of being a content creator is already harsh, the unjustified sexism of being a female content creator, even more so.

It’s a low bar I guess but I always enjoy seeing fathers who make the effort to care about their daughters and their specific needs

This is a great episode, Mulverine. That will be a 5/5, for me. Cheers.
Oh, and let me add something. And this is just my view on it. I don’t think it’s a filler at all. The scenes where the men are in the bathroom just being there and nothing is actually happening is a way of saying that, for this episode, the men are just there and let the women plot gets its shining. You can argue that Dwight has a subplot, but it implies directly to the point the writers are trying to make about sexism and that even the “protection” that some traditional men apply to women are not what (or the way) they would want or even deserve. It’s simple, they just want us to respect them. So I even applaud the fact that the men are just… there, while the Dunder Mifflin women get a great episode that also exemplifies and discuss the matter with such finesse.

Even if the person being sexist is being sexist towards their own sex. Female bosses discriminating by not employing female staff for instance.

The message, moral or deeper meaning, is just that we need to accept everyone for who they are, no matter what gender. This episode is pretty nuanced.
    Example are:
A stereotype of woman is that they like shopping. So a woman ""needs"" to be against shipping, cause else they are not a ""real strong woman"". But some like shopping. And, that, is, just, fine.
Woman get al kinds of program for them, to combat discrimination. However, that is literally discrimination.
Other stereotypes are that all woman cannot drive and all woman cannot change a tire. However, we see that 1 woman cannot drive and 1 woman can change a tire. Message: not everyone is the same due to some gender.

I think one of the deeper meanings is about being able to tell the difference between being in a rough patch and being in a dysfunctional relationship.
Karen and Pam respectively represent each of these things. Karen is clearly unhappy with Jim, and Pam was unhappy with Roy. The former didn't want to admit that it was over, while the latter had learned from her experience.
If you have to keep 'pushing through', maybe it's time to break it off.
Also, the portrayal of the women's room bothered me. Why is there a sitting room and one stall in the womens bathroom? The only restrooms I've been to with a sitting room were like really old churches. Its weird.
Angela wearing doll's clothes is weird also. Im not sure how short Angela is, but there are petite size clothes for women???

You got too political in this one man. I really appreciate that you always avoid that-- you should stick to that rule, it serves you well. In this episode you listed off a whole lot of "facts" that are not facts, but rather some people's opinions.
Privileged to be a man? Sure, just like there are countless privileges to being a woman. Would you count the immense social pressure placed on men to perform, earn and provide as a privilege? What about stricter criminal sentences and incarceration in inferior prisons? One-sided divorce court and family court rulings that drive men to bankruptcy and suicide? How about all the worst manual labor jobs being filled by men? Expectations of chivalry, and sacrificing safety and life as "women and children first?" The fact that men are far more likely to victims of violence? The list could go on and on. How many of these are you counting as privileges?
Point is, sexism exists, prejudice exists, and they are two-way streets. They sometimes hurt women, they sometimes hurt men. I myself have been turned down by jobs I was very qualified for, interviewed exceptionally well for, with given reasons that, had I been a woman, would have easily resulted in law suits (i.e. I was turned down for being a male, with a reason like, "you're not a good fit for the team," which was 85% female and had no white males on the team at all. Yeah, imagine a team of all white men telling a black woman she "isn't a good fit for the team"...).
I've got to quit watching this episode now. You're entitled to your opinions and world views, but please don't inject them into these usually outstanding reviews-- especially when trying to pass them off as "facts." Maybe you've experienced a realization that you have misogynistic tendencies, but don't place that on "men." Maybe you've led a privileged life, but don't assume all men have. You follow me. Best wishes though, I normally really enjoy your work here, so thank you!

Then are fine with saying "Blue lives matter"...... it's irony at its finest. I don't think anything is wrong with supporting the police in it of itself, but the truth is the people who preach this, but can't say "black lives matter" are degenerates, who history will sneer down upon.

@@Jay-hm9lj oof. Some real strong opinions there. Honestly, this persons support might have exactly nothing to do with BLM, so right now you’re assuming(which is incredibly dangerous to do given the volatile reaction you just had). I think it’s better to let someone have their freedom to support who they want without being called degenerates. It’s okay to have opinions, god damn it.

@@songbird6414 Yes, I am assuming...though my assumption is in all likelihood right. That being said to call my reaction "volatile" is hilarious. It's not as if I'm going to pull up to this man's house cause of a god damn opinion. And yes, I agree, people are allowed to have opinions..... AND I am allowed to judge them based off their opinions. Nothing is wrong with that. I support the expression of opinions and the freedom of speech no matter how extreme the view, however I can still reserve my own judgement. There's no need to be so sensitive or taken aback, as Hall said: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it".
