Toby putting his hand on Pam’s knee then jumping the Fence is one of my all time favorite jokes in the series. It gets me everytime for me it’s one of the best cringe jokes within the series, he’s always talking of travel and this awkward moment pushed him over the edge. It was truly amazing.
I have to give kudos to Paul Lieberstein, and also BJ Novak and Mindy Kaling - as writers of the show, they don't hesitate to make their own characters the butt of some very cringey humor. This certainly tops out the cringe-meter... who puts his hand on someone's knee when their boyfriend is sitting right on the other side of her, *and* in full view of everyone else in your office? I guess he forgot himself for a moment? If I did that, I'd run away to Costa Rica too.
@@jimcat68 there’s so much realism in Toby enjoying and talking and laughing with Pam so much he forgets they’re in a room of people and places his hand on Pam’s knee. I always assume he was just caught up in the moment and forgots everyone around it seems like they rarely have one on one time so to sit beside her and laugh with her? That’s more then Toby gets to do most days I can imagine him disappearing into a world of his own while talking to Pam, getting so caught up he reacts with his emotions first by touching her knee before thinking logically about where they are and how that is not appropriate.
It's because a normal guy ,can't control weirdos. Edit: I was re-watching the show, and there is one moment to prove you wrong my friend, Office Olympics
Michael's pure *euphoria* at Ryan's excitement is _so_ palpable! The kid he wants a bromance with and the respect of embraces him and for a single, solitary and fleeting moment he's in heaven! Only to have it all wash away when even HE realizes something is up.
also, the part where Jim is on the phone and says, "Heeeey....Chief." I swear that gets me every time. as someone who works (well pre-covid) in events with a mass amounts of people attending, this is something I absolutely HAVE to do due to meeting hundreds of people all of the time.
I feel like Creed only remembered Hank’s name because Hank is the security guard of the office which comes closest to a police officer and because this is the only time it would benefit him to know someone’s name
My favorite thing from this episode is that we see that even Michael knows Ryan doesn't like him that much when he's surprised that Ryan is happy to see him. 😂
I don't think of this episode as one of my favorites, but I'm always excited when it comes on. There's so much good stuff in it. A great moment that you didn't mention is when Michael and and Dwight find Ryan in NY and he's excited to see them. Such a perfect example of subverting audience expectations. Even Michael knows that's wrong. And "I have a lot of questions. Number one: how dare you." is my most used gif.
I’ll never forget the first time I saw this episode. Toby putting his hand on Pam’s leg was just so so horribly awkward but the subsequent fence jump was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.
It might mean nothing, but I just noticed something. When identity theft is mentioned, they cut to Dwight's reaction. I wonder if it's a deliberate reference to the Jim-as-Dwight prank, since Dwight mentions ID theft in that cold open?
4:08 As a Hispanic myself, I don't think is was meant to be a stone-cold racist joke, but it sort of foreshadows a stereotype that's very common among Americans and the whole continent to be fair. I didn't really take it as racist, because Jim was extremely agitated for the situation he provoked, and encountered a way to fix it (instead of waiting for Hank to arrive).
I always love to see how Dwight is actually a catch and do so well with women without even trying. Of course, he ruins it because he's... well, Dwight. But I think he didn't even began to realize he was doing well. That's an awesome trait of the character of Dwight and I look forward to see your take on a similar situation, when we get to Jim and Pam's wedding. Oh, and yes: that was racist.
I feel so bad for Jim when he stumbles into "you're the, um, the...black guy who sits at the..." as he started the call before being clear on the name. He's clearly self-conscious about it but lacking any other way to describe him. Assuming that the cleaning crew speaks Spanish is, however, not racist. It's always possible Jim has seen them before. Also, it's a cleaning crew in 21st Century America, so... I dunno, are they presumed to be Australians? (This would have been a funny place to intro Nate, though.) The person I really feel for is Toby, though. What an odd moment, and yet so human. Just an impulse he wasn't thinking through. And he literally has no way to recover from it. (At least if he were Meredith he could say he was drunk at work, for example.)

I dont think Jim not calling Hank was 100% on Jim. Remember, Toby was the one with his number, and then Toby jumped the fence. I imagine Jim had handed the phone back to Toby before kneegate. Now, should Jim/the other characters have gotten the number off of Toby's absolutely, but then we wouldn't get Hank's reaction.

That makes me laugh every time, in show or as a reference.
This was the point in the series at which I picked up on a running gag: every time Jim finds himself in charge, he messes up in some hilarious way.
