      Hey Dustin... We use neat Methylated Spirit on our Trangia and hardly get any soot. We tried diluting it once and that resulted in much sootyness!

    The black "soot" or creosote is from using the trangia stove system with isopropyl alcohol which is only 70% alcohol, while this works it burns quite dirty inefficiently. Try using yellow HEET or denatured alcohol.

    When I cook over a fire while camping I rub the outside of the pot before I use it with a little travel sized bar of soap. It helps keep the pot from getting black! Learned that while working for a canoe outfitter in Ely, MN.

    We use a Trangia with Methylated Spirits, and it can be a bit sooty - the solution in this case is to add 10% water. Generally we buy it by the litre, so we mix 100ml into that 1l.
    Works a treat!

    Use ethanol. Like 90+ alcohol. And put a drop or two of water from your waterbottle in the ethanol in the burner. This will help reduce or get rid of the sod on your pans. But... When I was a kid I used an ethanol burner in my trangia. Now I use a gasburner, my MSR (jetboil equivalent) or my multifuel burner. It's just easier and whatever to deal with. No sod. Love your videos. Such a highlight during the week

    • @EverythingsBeenDone
      @EverythingsBeenDone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    when i use my Trangia with the spiritburner (got the gasburner aswell) i always but a couple drops of water in the spirit. It helps with the soot. and before doing dishes, i look for a good patch of grass, and just rub the bottom of the pan on the grass. Keeps the set pretty much soot-free.
    on another note, instead of the heated blanket, get a good sleepingbag with an inner bag. Keeps you cozy at night.

  • @Schlem
    @Schlem 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As mentioned, denatured alcohol is the way to go. You may may want to try several vendors before you find one that burns the cleanest. Then you can buy in a larger quantity for economy. ALSO, using the simmer ring is going to reduce the oxygenation of the burning fuel, resulting in incomplete combustion and more soot. If you're just boiling water, don't mess with the simmer ring. Just get er done. ALSO ALSO, you can get a gas burner for the unit that takes standard isobutane (like MSR, Jetboil, etc) tanks, bottles, whatchamacallem. No soot from isobutane. At all, ever. Thanks for the vicarious campout!

    • @Schlem
