That's a great bike. Although I haven't ridden it now for a very long time I decided to put it up for sale a few weeks ago.

    Awesome bike man, subbed.

The drilled-out handlebars for internal brake cable routing is interesting. The bars are more aero if you run the cable right along the front of the bar under the wrap though, so not so sure if I would call what they did there an "upgrade". Now if you drill out the frame for internal cable routing that would be a different story... lol UPGRADE!

technically it's more aero if the cable is routed on the backside of the round bars as then the shape is more airfoil like with the tape covering it - I did this until I went to aero shaped bars.
This is early 1980s ... They drilled chainrings, derailleurs, brake levers, et all but not the frame (from water ingress). But if you have too many holes you'll get whistling at speed such as with the Cinelli "light aero" Spinacis of the time.

Stunning bike, those Alan lugs are pure art!

Yes the ALANs are really nice as they added small details all over.
I had borrowed this bike for one race back when I used Columbus SL and SLX frames. With this 49cm frame one had to double pedal to counter the frame flex. I was a sprinter back then so one really wants their power to be totally in propulsion not flex (stuff ppl seemed to only learn recently with all the ceramics and wattage tracking). It was no different back then. This bike though is 17lbs though, superlight considering it's age.

Very interesting , bet she rides nice. I built and ride a '91 silver Alan with Campy Record C 1st edition throughout (my most prized possession).

Soft ride. The rear end is whippy when you put the power down. Racers in larger frames I recall said they were noodles (like the Vitus of the day). I was a sprinter and the rear triangle was very flexy for a 49cm. I normally road a SL or SLX frame (Tomasso, Guerciotti).
1st Gen C rec - that rear der is such an awesome piece of art work; loved the cranksets, delta brake calipers too.

Still my favorite bike of all time. The rear was prone to upshifts if you had a sloppy pedal style but really comfortable for long rides. I hope to ride mine at the Belgian Waffle Ride in San Diego later this year. Nice to see a close to period original Alan. I have to say I have never seen one with black tubes except for the carbon fiber versions. Nice find.

The sloppy upshifts were due to frame flex especially during sprinting. I found that out when I initially borrowed it for a race as my race bike was getting fixed. I recall other tall racers complain of a lot of frame flex on these and Vitus frames. But it's a great bike to ride. Soone or later I'll have an episode about the Hi-Lo hubs
