    Very nice board, but in the future use 90 degree turns. This is because it will block/hinder the shockwaves from blasts.. Your trench would now direct the wave straight to two different areas.. command post and an ammo dump. :)

    To complete that ww1 look, you gotta have trenches in one end of the board for Kriegs and a fortress on the other. Go Battlefield 1 and play a long series of short battles stretching from the trenches and ending in the siege of the fortress.

  • @purplefood1
    @purplefood1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It looks really good, my only issue would be trenches generally have more zig-zags so you can't just get into it and fire straight down the entire trench.

    • @BroadswordWargaming
      @BroadswordWargaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I felt that there wasn't really enough room to put too much zig zaginess onto this without overcrowding it or filling the board. It's only 30x22, so it's relatively small (kill team sized).
      I will come back to the trench style board, on a bigger piece. 😀

    Very cool. As far as im aware, trenches in ww1 had sharper turns than the train track template. They also had tons of 90 degree turns to stop shrapnel and blast waves. Very nice board but thats just something that bothered me. Cheers!

    • @BroadswordWargaming
      @BroadswordWargaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean, it's being used for killteam really and those boards aren't very big. You don't have room for 90 degree turns and bunkers without over crowding the board. If you want to do that, you could, but I don't think it'd look good at this size. It is really just a nod to that style but grim darking it up

    Crumbling polystyrene by hand is a mistake you tend to make only once or twice. Those tiny balls end up getting everywhere and can take months to get out of all corners of the house.
    You can buy cheap thermal cutters from as little as £10, or make some yourself with a wire and some batteries.

  • @RedstoneMinis
    @RedstoneMinis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You recommend doing the polystyrene cutting outside to reduce clean-up. I think that is a terrible idea, as this is not bio degradable, and super bad for the environment. Keep it inside and do the cleanup or find a different material that doesn’t require as much cleanup?

    • @BroadswordWargaming
      @BroadswordWargaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you've misunderstood the intent behind what I meant. I'm not saying throw polystyrene all over the world, I just meant not in my studio really.. and id actually do the grout etc outside, as that stuff gets everywhere.

    Ive been thinking of doing this myself but scaling it up to 40k, so 6' by 4'. Do you think I should do trenches on one side and have one army assaulting and one defending or do trenches on both sides?

    • @fearfulgrot
      @fearfulgrot 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      both, but try to have an "attacker" so there is no stalemate

    • @Edithae
      @Edithae 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fearfulgrot
      No I disagree.
      Have trenches on one side and a no-man's-land on the other, for an attacker-defender game.
      You can balance the board by creating lots of undulation in terrain in the no-mans-land, so the attacker has lots of cover as they advance.
      Ruins. Shell craters. Water features. Depressions or rises/hills. Abandoned trenches. Wrecked tanks etc.
      No-Man's-land does not have to mean there is no terrain or cover for the attacker, it just means there are no fortifications.

    To make trenches more realistic you should make them zigzag to stop enemy troops from being able to shoot straight down them also you could add some bunkers similar to the ones in WWII

    • @BroadswordWargaming
      @BroadswordWargaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that would look good. This isn't a very big board (it's kill team sized(, so I didn't have the room for zig zagging trenches without clogging it up too much. I will be doing this on a larger board, so lots of zigzags and some weapons bunkers and stuff would look awesome. 😁

  • @sirrathersplendid4825
    @sirrathersplendid4825 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Straight lines are a bit of a no-no in trench design, as the blast from an explosion will travel long the trench; also any enemy getting into the system can produce devastating fire by firing down the trench. For this reason all trenches were made in a series of zig-zags.

      Hey, so, the base board is 3mm play (you can probably go to 6mm if you want it a little stronger), edged with 25mm this wood, and filled with 25mm foam.
      The ground cover is brown tile grout, soil (from the garden) and ash, although you don't really need the ash.
      I spray it all with isopropynol first, and then spray with watered down PVA. Really drown it in PVA, and do it several times through the week. 😀

    Great project and video!
    Tip: For more realistic timber texture on the coffee stirrers, I find using a sharp (not used much) hacksaw/metal-saw blade is best as you get really fine grooves on the wood and they come up really well during washing and dry brushing. Any sharp saw blade will do as you pass over the wood multiple times but the hacksaw blade is the most readily available and finest.
