Best animation artist ever, in my eyes he has surpassed even Walt Disney himself!

Yes! Yes- it is! Fascinating also is hearing about the overall sense of looming fear affecting the artist do to the same prewar anxieties that they know are coming, which affected their parents and grandparents during WW2, we all know it's coming though sorry to say it's in man's fallen nature to make war and kill each other, we should all be confiding in everyone we know around us so we can fight against this. Just because it's inevitable that another world war will happen for it is foretold it would doesn't mean we don't try to stop it or just as important and more so try to bring the message of Jesus Christs salvation so all may come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

I do love what has been giving to us through technology but there is no way those 3d animations movie can compare to this hand drawing animation.
The same way a CG car flip can't replace the thrill of a real stunt man.
I respectfully disagree with your first sentence. I practice and study animation and also believe that 3d animation and traditional hand drawn animation are very comparable. 3d or computer generated imagery (in the case of animation) should be seen as a new medium through which we can tell a story or express whatever is on the artist's mind. Just like stop-motion animation (A nightmare before christmas, for example), cut-out animation, straight-ahead animation, etc., 3d animation is only a new medium! The amount of work, creativity, stress and love put in a 3d animation is just as towering as that of a traditional animation, even though the working pipeline is very similar in some ways and very different in other ways. Now, on a personnal level, I do prefer hand drawn animation purely for the liberty it offers and the aesthetic of it. It might also be because I'm nostalgic and grew up with traditonnal animation and stop-motion animation. Unfortunately, a lot of people think that CG imagery is so easy to do that it basically does itself. It's crazy how hard it is to do right and how most artists are exploited in this industry. On the other hand, I do agree with the overuse of visual effects (cg) in live action movies. It never feels just as good as real stuff (like how they replace makeup and costumes in The Hobbit for cg characters). It is unfortunately more cost-efficient to use cg than to do the real stuff (and one reason for that is how underpaid the artists are). In the end, visual effects in live action movies and animation movies are two completely different things. The former is mostly used for cost-effeciency while the latter is more of the artist's taste or vision of the animation he wants to do.
Subjective play a big part then. You practice and study animation and also believe but I have been working in 3d animation for 5 years(before I switched back to be an architect). Let me put some example. A character shirt turn its colour automatically when he walk toward the light there is nothing there the artist need to do compare to a real hand drawing where the artist need to recolour any object frame after frame. The labor and artistic skill is so different on both case.
mikexhotmail It is true that the labor is very much different. One thing that comes to my mind is a traditional hand drawing animator could very well transfer to 3d animation in a matter of a few months (time required to learn the software). On the other hand, a pure 3d animator would have a much harder time to go do traditional animation if he's not practicing his drawing skills. Usually the best 3d animators have good 2d roots. But to say that a good 3d image is easier to do than a good 2d image would be wrong. Sometimes the skills required are different, sometimes they are very much alike. Every step of the process in 3d is very hard to do if you want to achieve something believable and endearing. Just like 2d. If you take the lighting subject you just mentionned, that would be like saying that stop-motion animation is easier than hand drawn animation because the lights are just there and when the puppet goes through it the light shines upon him automaticly. To be a lighter in both regular films and 3d animation is a very hard job! Just like coloring in 2d animation. Until recently, pixar lighting artists had to strategically place every single light that would simulate evey single bounce of light that occurs in the real world. In a big scene that means a truckload of lights and a very good understanding of light theory. In the end though, the best cg artists out there are the ones who also have solid foundations in traditional arts or at least knowledge of the theory of said arts. As far as I know, I will always prefer 2d animation. But the possibilities of 3d animation are endless and they will keep growing and I can't wait to see where that brings us to.

It's funny, Miyazaki looked pretty upset earlier in his career. Especially in the behind the scenes for Princess Mononoke. Recently, though, he actually looks happy.

Compare this to some kind of shitshow like Illumination "Entertainment"... shitting out a new crappy movie out every year, as dumbed down as can be because they know that it only has to be liked by infants. And so they fill 90 minutes with fart jokes and reused models. And then there's studio Ghibli - they make movies kids will love and grown-ups will adore. Their philosophy is "You need to show kids something in movies that they can't yet understand becaus they will grow up to understand it.". Hayao Miyazaki is probably the single most amazing person in animation.

Yeah, Europe was(and still is) an object of envy and appreciation for Japanese because of its art, science, sophisticated political system etc. So Japanese regarded to have much knowledge about Europe as a great thing.
