What I find in this tuning is, it makes a self taught guitar player like myself, use their little finger, your pinkie more often.
I write Christian music and sometimes I am asked to play my little tunes. I have been doing it for 40 years, but my playing abilities is limited because I'm self taught. So until I learn the right way, these different tunings are very helpful.
I do use drop D tuning sometimes, but this is DADGAD tuning is oh so pretty.

The flat 7 note in D is what helps give it that Irish sound especially if the tune is a slow air, gorgeous guitar too, although DADGAD is associated with Celtic music it was actually developed by English folk player Davy Graham, 👍
Folk music all around the British isles is very similar and shared between all the nations there. Thats because all the peoples are in fact related to each other, even the English.
Incredible playing and great rundown. I'm probably not as experienced as some of the other commenters, but I've been finally tapping into improvisation after a couple years of playing, and DADGAD seems amazing for it, it's half already familiar and the other half just beautiful sounding. Hearing how you play it was awe-inspiring. Your explanation was good, too, right to the point.

This is by far the best video on TH-cam on DADGAD. None that I've seen make it so clear what precisely one gains from using the tuning, i.e. what are its inherent qualities.
Muriel: DADGAD has been my nemesis! It has been that illusive "secret" to me for my 60 years of playing guitar. in 8 minutes, you may have opened the door for me! While I subbed at the OTSFM, I never was taught or learned anything about the tuning.
Now, I look forward to rearranging some of the tunes I do for DADGAD! Looking forward to seeing you sometime this year, probably Thanksgiving, but, hopefully EARLIER! Continued success!

This popped up in my inbox again after a long while and it's just as beautiful. I wish you would do a video about other keys in DADGAD. I have found G to be especially rewarding, but never gone beyond that (and D, obviously!). Thanks again. It stands the test of time.
After wading through lots of videos I found yours, and it was like having light bulbs going off in my head. Your comment about scales in the first position being even across the neck gave me the start I had been looking for. My wife has been amazed, my 12 fret short scale hog/blackwood Taylor never sounded more resonant and I've probably strained my shoulder playing all kinds of made up tunes in the last 90 minutes. THANK YOU!!!

I Absolutely LOVED Your Guitar Tuning & Picking. It was so refreshing & so free flowing. I will study & practice. I also have a Similar tuning to Yours. Which is DADDAD That I use on My 12 String Guitars. It gives me & Creates a sort of a Semi Middle Eastern Feel & Sound. I am originally a self taught Drummer. But I am also self taught on 9 Instruments. I can not read music & play & compose all by Ear. So most of my own teaching is by trail & error. The two pieces of music You played off Your CD Muriel. I Totally Loved the way it weaved, & blended so openly. So Gentle, Subtle, Delicate & Flowed Like Butterflies in an open field. Thank You Very Much Muriel. I use the same tuning on my 12 strings. I've wrote a lot of tunes in that tuning. Well it;s like there are in there waiting to be found. lol

Excellent instructive video. I play four songs in DADGAD tuning, (South City Midnight Lady, Willin', Help Me Through The Night, and Aint Much Left Of Me). But I never really explored DADGAD. Will now. Thank you Muriel for opening another path of the never ending journey of guitar. By the way have been a fan for quite sometime. My granddaughter loves your duet with Tommy Emmanuel of Vincent, as do I.

I enjoyed this very much. As a lifelong guitarist that has shied away from alternate tunings, mostly due to the 'relearning' of scales, and chord positions... (as a 'lead' player, who loves to riff in between the chords..etc...) I found some of your concepts intriguing. I am picking up your books....and just watching for a moment, gave me some insight..with the 'lines' concept..... Thanks :)

I know how you feel, I have a hard time composing melodies in standard tuning, but in DADGAD, I find it so much easier.

what a lovely classic Guittar you have, I´m trying this kind of setting song in my guittar and I´m loving it. Congratulation your hands are so calm and sensible to touch that I can fell these notes my soul the peace, beatilful place you choose, I´m curious to know how you record such natual e song with so big quality.
Just used a Zoom H5 with a shotgun on this.
an excellent way to explore the guitar in altered tunings. It seems obvious to concentrate on the groups of notes that fall on the scale pattern of the D major! Why didn't I think of this /sigh :/
