Been watching this and learning this song. I'm about halfway there. It's hauntingly beautiful but very difficult. Thanks Al. I have challenged myself to be a better guitarist from the first time I watched this. You sir are amazing.
When I watched the blues scale being played in this mode, and doing bends it suddenly brought immense joy back to playing in this tuning. I have watched this video 5 times already, and can preform this song ok now.
@@UnlimitedMoon - There are a ton of different players (styles) of DADGAD. Bensusan is in a league of his own (as is this guy). But the kind of music they play couldn't be more dissimilar (most of the time/ much of the time).
I have no idea where the song "Wayfaring Stranger" came from. But since I heard it long ago, it has always been one of my favorite tunes. I wish I could play this song on my own guitar. perhaps following this gentleman's teaching and demonstrations I might be able to play this hauntingly beautiful song! Thanks!!
I came across Al's lovely arrangement of this piece a couple of years back and tried my hand at learning it but I guess my skill level or attention span wasn't co-operating so I passed it by. I rediscovered it last week and this time worked it out. It's definitely a piece for those who are very comfortable picking and want to discover the world of DADGAD. My only reservation is DVD instruction, yes they're great if you want to take the shortcut route - but do your best to work it out from simply listening to the piece first, yes i know for some it's hard but it's an important skill you have to learn when serving your apprenticeship as a guitar player - Good Luck !!
Love hearing these stories of successful travel along the road to fingerstyle. Well done, and keep playing. It's funny how you come across something that stumped you in a previous season, and discover that you've gained enough skill since then that it's now become something manageable. Proof that you're progressing, even if it feels sometimes like you're not :) You should upload a rendition.
sigh...the NEXT Al Petteway song on my list to learn... just polishing up "Rise Up My Love"... after that, it's Wayfaring Stranger. Thanks Al- your instructional videos are gold sir.
I've learned tons of kottke opens ,g etc..... learned to play black mountain way by page fourty plus years ago in dadgad now it,s time to immersing myself in dadgad!
If you're an intermediate or advanced guitar player and you like this, you might want to check out his DVDs on Homespun. Lots of unique material and Al breaks his arrangements down as simply as possible.
Danny Irmscher I own quite a few of his DVD's about DADGAD tuning. He really explains well what he is doing. I like DADGAD so well I bought a guitar that I strictly keep in DADGAD tuning. Celtic players use DADGAD a lot.
Great playing and excellent teaching as well! Interesting how this music favors chords that eliminate the 3rd and 7th, while jazz chords are completely opposite (eliminating root and fifth).
Beautifully done Al! I've enjoyed your playing for many years and meeting you at Borders Books in Towson with Maggie Sansone some years ago! Nice to see you on TH-cam!
Pressed wrong button ; as I was saying oops … … great tune seeing left hand and right hand at the same time is great and what an amazing amazing tune !
I just received your Blues Guitar Arrangments in DADGAD Tuning". I was so moved by this performance. Do you have a DVD that has lesson on how to play "Wayfaring Stranger" I am going to purchase a few of your CDs. Such beautiful guitar playing.
Drones, my man. That's the Scotch-Irish hillpeople thing. Fill a chord out with drone tones, so it like never taking a breath. If you ever listen to dulcimer, or in Scotland (or a Ren fair) hurdy gurdie, you'll hear it there too.
Also, the song at the beginning is "Shady Grove," in case you were wondering. Another wonderful song that even modern bluegrass and "Progressive bluegrass" bands play today.
Very Nice Al:), Ive just finished it, well, still adding ornamentation, but its an easy tune:). You say it does not "hurt", with the strings tuned lower?? This is a real important issue with me. Playing mostly electric for near 40 years, acoustics ARE def harder on the fingers:/ Mine have got REAL tough, real fast, lol. I looked hard for the right[easy] action, found it in a Fender..butter smooth:) What are YOU playing Al???
Hello everyone. Could anyone tell me what guitar is he using? What brand-model is it? And if anyone knows, what is the name of those guitars used for playing that "two hands tapping style" ? You know, very bright sound, lots of harmonics and stuff....I would appreciate that info since im trying to buy a guitar like that one. See ya!
I tested the guitar tabs at FREE-SCORES.COM but it's not exactly the same as the video. I think Bergeron did his best in notating Petteway's music, but it's good enough for me. You have to add the bends and a few notes to duplicate the video. By the way, you can slow down the TH-cam video to half speed to get his fingering right. It would be interesting if you all have an extension to this short 2:36 minute piece. Maybe an intro or another segment. I'd like to hear from you.
Dimitrios Greek Something custom built it looks like. Lot of great guitar builders out there. It looks though to me it could be a Del Langejans guitar. He's retired now I'm told from building. He had a shop in Holland, Michigan. Retired to Florida I am told but not sure.
Al Petteway made me want to learn guitar in my late 40s.
My condolences to his family. He was a 6 string master and a good soul.
RIP love your playing. Very happy I was able to hear you play.
Rest in Peace Mr. Petteway.
😮
Those bends melted my ears. OMG
Been watching this and learning this song. I'm about halfway there. It's hauntingly beautiful but very difficult. Thanks Al. I have challenged myself to be a better guitarist from the first time I watched this. You sir are amazing.
That guitar tuning is just legendary, sounds heavenly, what a player
Sounds great!
Sounds great. I’m learning to play using DADGAD. It really is the best time I’ve had playing on my guitar. Effortless and wholesome sound.
Blown away by that performance. Wow!
Hauntingly beautiful. Best arrangement I've heard.

Superb! Thanks for sharing.
This tuning and your play style form a bridge between Celtic, blues, and natives influences.
Hauntingly terrific!!
the intro makes me think of the swamps down in Louisiana.. he's a phenomenal player, love the D tuning...fits the song perfectly.
That is amazing,so cool well done brother Petteway
Fabulous guitar playing as usual from Mr Petteway....amazing,
.
thanks for the instruction ... one of the most timeless songs ever!
This is breathtakingly beautiful
Awesome job 👍 my favorite version of this song. Especially the double D gad bend. Hello from the Kentucky mountains 👍

I like the Shady Grove at the beginning too!
This is the best version on youtube that I know of.
I've learned tons of kottke opens ,g etc..... learned to play black mountain way by page fourty plus years ago in dadgad now it,s time to immersing myself in dadgad!

THis is awesome! Damn, now i gotta learn some of it... there goes this week, or longer. haha
Correction: Shady Grove is on the DVD.
Pressed wrong button ; as I was saying oops … … great tune seeing left hand and right hand at the same time is great and what an amazing amazing tune !
AWESOME!
Its an Al Petteway signature series made by master luthier Bill Tippin. He also utilizes Rainsong guitars...a graphite mix
can you really imagine a guitar made out of fucking plastic?
In case anybody was wondering the string numbers from the finger picking at 5:25, I believe it's, 6&3 - 4 - 2 - 6 - 2 - 4 - 6 - 1 -
That intro of shady grove was awesome. Lesson please.

Oh, I see you know from where the song originates, it was written in the 1840s and most likely was sung in shape note. Thank you for mentioning that.
brilliant !
a great tune, well played man:)..Learning it now, not too hard at all:)
VERY nice! The beginning sounds like bagpipes!
I heard that too.

nice. 😬👍🏻❤️
Al rulz!
Inspired @ 2:06 to 2:09
the opener for this vid is a Bagpipe tune. this guy is awesome
I don't know where Phil keaggy got on to using the dadgad tuning from but he excels at it.
Davey Graham probably.
Kyle, that first tune is entitled, "Shady Grove", but I do not know if it will be included in the online DVD. I hope so too.
If I bought the DVD, would you have the tabs that go with "Wayfaring Stranger"?

What is the name of the song he plays in the beginning?
Patrick B Shady Grove
Shady Grove. David Grisham and Jerry Garcia do a great version of it.
Dear Al, I purchased this from H.S. but will not work with my computer is there another way to get this DVD instruction manual.
....look how low the action is. And the guitar still has all the tone in the world. WOW
Hey Al what is your action on that guitar 1st and 12th fret, looks very low.

What size of strings are you using
We Will try and come up with an answer for you.
Hi, what was that first tune and will it be included in the online DVD? Would really help, thanks Kyle
does anyone have tabs?
Does anybody know what guitar he is playing??
It's his signature model by Tippin, I'm pretty sure (see his name at the 12th fret).
Thanks much Danny!!
