Sometimes human beings really do transcend. The craftsmanship in the instrument, the virtuosity of Muriel's playing and arrangement and the beautiful songwriting of Don McLean. ❤ Just perfect.
After all these years I have come across an instument I have never seen before !! beautiful...why have I never heard of or seen one of these amazing instruments before ? Its amazing
Harp guitars were popular over 100 years ago, and they were on a lot of phonograph records. I collect records, so I'd seen the name, but only recently found what they look like.
@@teresagray1477To answer everyone's question, most of the harp guitars that were popular 100 years ago broke, long ago, because of the tension of those long strings against a hollow resonator that doesn't offer the same support as the neck. If you have one of these instruments you always have to detune it before long term storage. But also, they were hard to make. They were there because a double bass was too big and cumbersome for most gigs. Once the bass guitar was invented, people decided that was way easier.
No doubt they are all experts & could do better ....or they are, by nature, internally warped. It's all I can come up with to answer your question. It's obvious to me that she is highly skilled & in the process of learning an amazing & complicated new instrument. Fantastic! Thanks for sharing & thumbs up.
I think that about many videos: "who on Earth could object to this?" For the sake of science I just now searched TH-cam for "kittens playing" and found many videos of exactly that. Many downvotes on each one. Bizarre.
Your choice of Don McLean's transcendent "Vincent" to demonstrate this remarkable instrument was divine, your execution, exquisite. When I first sung this song for a gig, I was so emotionally moved I almost couldn't finish. A love song about a painter! As McLean wrote, "Now I understand what you tried to say to me." My deepest appreciation.
I'm reading Van Gogh, The Complete Paintings by Taschen and learning about the man and his torment, his friends, and his love for his brother, Theo. Seeing all of his artwork, is incredible. I've gotten 3/4 of the way through and I've stopped for a while, unable to finish right now because we know how it ends. :( McLean's Vincent played on the radio one day and it choked me up knowing now so much more about him as a human being. xx

I caught the tune right away and seeing it’s one of my very favorite songs of all time (and I’m 54) it made this even more delightful to have happened across!
Hello!! I’ve been struggling for 70 years trying to be a decent six string guitarist and here you are being a goddess playing a twenty string guitar. You are quite wonderful. John Paiva
I could listen and look at Muriel all day! I could ALSO listen to that harp guitar played by her all day! Thank you for the demonstration and short piece of music.
Might I suggest her Two Friends CD with Julie Adams, cello. When I first got it (many years ago from Julie) it stayed on my CD player for several weeks and was played constantly -- so very beautiful and quite relaxing. Can't say enough about Muriel's playing -- quite extraordinary.
Occasionally youtube offers a gem. A guitar with a similar range to a grand piano? The instrument maker did a great job of building something that stays in tune with all that tension and have it sound so beautiful.
Beautiful Muriel guitar playing; it doesn't get much better, and a harp guitar is a technically different beast. I loved the late great Michael Hedges playing and got turned on to harp guitar from his incredible music. 🤘🏻❤️
The craftsmanship that went into the making of this instrument is equally as grand as the musicianship of its owner. You are both amazing artists and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to enjoy what you have shared here. Bravo 👏.
Muriel Anderson is amazing. She's my size (extremely petite) and handles an instrument that I find absolutely daunting (and I play the actual HARP!). And I absolutely love that she pioneered sharping levers on the harp guitar. MURIEL FTW.
I have no talent in the musical area and it amazes me when I see and hear others make the sounds they produce with such ease.Such talent is precious and rare and should be immortalized. Thank you for letting me hear and see you.
This is the first time I've ever seen one of these . I have never even heard of one. But my goodness she plays it effortlessly and it sounds so beautiful. And that is one of my favorite songs to listen to. How amazing. I will live out the rest of my life. Remember this moment and hearing her play this song in my mind. Thank you for sharing. This is just amazing.
I know nothing about music theory and technique, nor do I know how to play any instrument, but I love musical instruments and love to see musicians talk about them. This is a beautiful piece of work, and the song by the end was fantastic. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, this is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for the clear and informative introduction to this gorgeous instrument, for your powerfully grounded artistry and poetic nature, and for eliciting such Beauty from the instrument, and from "Vincent". Just wonderful! Thank you so much!
This is jaw-dropping! I stumbled upon this recording accidentally. The instrument is out of this world and Muriel is a goddess of music. She is simply magic! Thank you for sharing this with the world.
The man who crafted this beautiful instrument, like those other masters who have built violins etc, had The Good Lord touching their hands and their hearts to bring out the music that is within.

GORGEOUS instrument.....are you kidding me⁉️What a SOUND!!!! What a fabulous musician playing one of my forever, all time favorite sings!!! Yes....I, too am tearing up. ❤️🙌🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🎵🎶
So ethereal. The sounds from this are so amazing that I'd simply play myself into a hypnotic slumber each time, thus unable to figure out if I had enough talent to play it. Either that or get my arm so tangled up in the strings that a good Samaritan would have to be posted nearby to cut me loose.
As a musician/composer all my life, I've had occasion to "go deep," "enter the haze," "journey with," and "float above" both melody and rhythm. While there, I found a door that allows passage to the music behind the music. These are the sounds of Heaven, the harmonies from which you simply do not want to return. I've learned that while there, however brief the encounter may be, a tiny bit of the soul of music is imparted. Once back in our 5-sense defined realm, you can "pick out" other musicians who have "been there." They've got a piece of that soul that enables them to offer the music behind the music. Muriel is one of them.
I first heard Muriel play at Beanblossom in our campfire jam in 1978. She was a teenager and, even then, she obviously was a musical gift in the making. What an amazing career.
That has got to be the most beauthful sounding string instrument I have ever heard, I always wished I had learnd to play the guitar instead of the piano and now I'm even sadder for times lost!
Whenever I see something novel, like your guitar-harp, my thoughts usually gravitate toward its manufacture and how difficult they always seem. In your instance, the result is so effortlessly beautiful, I'm glad you mentioned the difficulty with its origins.
I myself gave it a thumbs down because I was disappointed in the fact that she really didn’t play it much in this video and that’s what I was looking for.

The instrument is a work of art, and then she starts playing it. Gorgeous, haunting, soul-filling tone.

I love the song "Vincent". Sounded great. One of my all time favorite songs done excellently on a most unique guitar.. Bravo.
I think Muriel Anderson is a wonderful guitarist. She is playing with so much passion! 💗🙏
I don't dispute that the instrument has a beautiful tone, but so much of what is mistaken as tone is actually the 'touch' of the musician. Beautiful.
You're right, despite its tones and appearance, because it sure would sound like a sheer annoyance in my magical hands...
