I majored in psychology and criminology. I am considering going into psychology but not sure which branch of psychology is in demand. Is the also a short cut course. Last i heard one can do a 18 month course and become a qualified psychologist. I just dont want to end up studying further and cant get a job. It was really tough getting a job with just an undergraduate degree alone. I was discouraged from a friend who is a psychologist...she said its not like what it was in her days to. she sed its more tough to write those final exams. not sure if someone here can provide me with clarity.
As a psychologist myself, I can tell you that you can earn a lot more in private practice. Plus, you work in a much better environment and pay less tax if you know how to manage your business. You can also manage your own working hours :)

The DPSA salary scale is for those that are employed in the public sector. The salary or rules in the Deapartment of Higher Education may differ. I would still check with the department of higher education on their rules

All psychologists, irrespective of speciality, in the public sector should earn the same but if you are in the private sector or higher education, it differs. I will look into it. Thanks for watching.

I am not aware of the public sector employing educational psychology for the internship. I assume the department of higher education does employ interns but the salary is apparently is lower according to one of the viewers on this channel. @Kefentse Rachoene thats true...for you to be called a qualified Psychologist you have to have either a MA/MSc(3 years BA/BSc + 1 year Hons + 2 year of MA/MSc = 6 years) in whatever branch of psychology you decided to register and also you have to pass the board exam. BA alone is not enough.To even register as a counsellor you still need an hons.
Can someone please explain to me why psychologists charge so much but earn so little?? In my experience they generally charge approx R1k per hour, so how come the stats show that they earn so poorly?
I want to be a psychologist I just love it and I wanted to know how I will make it once I finish school to go to university I really want to be a psychologist and I'm not settling for less
Yes. All salary should be the same if you employed via DPSA rules. If you are employed via the Department of Higher Education then the salary may differ. Each University it seems pays differently.

I tried to look at the numbers but the answer requires a bit more statistics which is difficult to come by. I would think that it would be easy to get work in the clinical or counselling field as you deal directly with the patient who will be paying you directly. In the research field the client is corporate, universities, NGO's etc. so the client base will be smaller. But I assume the corporate will definitely need research psychologists to guide them. Specialised work will pay more but demand may be less. This is just my opinion and not based on thorough research.

Hey! Inhospitable typically means an uncomfortable or harsh environment that's difficult to live or work in (such as rural villages with maybe limited access to water etc)

I would assume it depends where you work. If you are employed by an institute under the DPSA then it would follow you would earn the same as a psychologist salary I posted. If you work for the Department of Higher Education then it would differ from the DPSA salary as each university has their own salary structure.
You work for a university thus you probably get paid according to university structures and that would explain your salary scale. The salary I discussed was Public sector (DPSA) regulations.

As a Registered Counsellor I differ with Grade 1 salary, it's not 32k for all sectors.
