Solovyev's portraits are stunning!
He's one of my favorites. What I like about him is that a lot of his content is so beginner friendly. 99% of his TH-cam tutorials are 15 min sketches that anyone (even me lol) can follow along with.
Michael Solovyev is one of my favourite watercolour artists who really inspires me to paint more loosely and simply but also learning more about mixing colours and the use of values to create these light effects through subtle and strong contrasts.
Obviously, all artists teach these things to a greater or lesser extent. However, for me, his short 15-minute videos and online workshops have really given me such an insight into his painting approach.
As a relative beginner, I'm still learning and experimenting with different ways of painting, but Michael gives me a kind of anchor to the capture the beauty and essence of a subject yet also to became more free with line and brush work.
You've done a superb job on reviewing some of his work here Liron, thank you for all your videos and continued enthusiasm which also inspires me on my newbie watercolour journey.

It's good to see you featuring Michael's artwork. You speculated about him not using masking fluid on one of the early paintings. He's said that he never uses it because he feels it limits what he can do when he's actually painting. I may be wrong but I feel his art is different from many because of his heavy emphasis on light rather than darks, while retaining contrast with bright colors. I was mesmerized when I got to watch him do a demo painting. He turned me onto DS Indian Yellow which is a fantastic, transparent yellow.

This is very inspirational. It makes me see options for what makes an interesting subject to paint. It’s easy to get caught in a rut of what everyone paints. Street scene, the beach, a landscape... I love this fresh view of traditional subjects.

Another great 'find' Liron - thanks for sharing your discovery! It's always interesting to hear one artist's observations about another artist and how he/she relates to the style, execution, overall impact etc and I'm always glad when another of this periodic series pops up on your channel. Great review Liron, glad you made one about Michael Solovyev, we are fortunate to have this great artist living in the Montreal area. Love the painting @ 4:10 and the one @ 7:50 looks like that one was done in old Montreal. One thing I found amazingly different about him is his flat line brushes series.

Interesting how bright his paintings are, and also the subjects have interesting ideas, the old man and old tower, the old horse-drawn cart and the new sedan. And I love that horse cart and the approaching small boy, I recall seeing delivery vehicles with horses as a child circa 1953-1955.
I stumbled on Michael Solovyev a few months ago. It was "love at first light.," and his wonderful use of negative painting." I will follow u now to see if u stumble on another great artist. Thanxs for sharing!

You are right. The reference photo took my friend, Michel Andersen. Painting name is "Ben & Winston: ))
The last one looks a bit like St Jacobs near where I live. Lots of Mennonite horse and buggys (and yes, they have to use that red triangle for traffic safety).

Wow, I like this artist too. Thanks for sharing. By the way, the stick that holds a bike up is called a “kick stand” because you kick it down when you need it to hold you bike steady. You speak English very well.

The thing the Bicycle leans on is called; the Kickstand. I guess cause you kinda kick it with your foot to engage it. ..Hope all is well. sz

Hi Liron - I Need to ask you - what has happened to the watercolor paper?!?! Paper I used to Love - Arches bright and Fabriano CP, Moulin du Roy - over the last couple years has gotten just awful? The color used to stay up and bright and was somewhat lift-able depending on the brand. Now the pigments soak in, i get little dots like you do with the cheapest paper out there. The colors dry dull and pasty. I just cry over this!! My solution has been to prepare the paper first with a solution of 25% PVA size and that works better, but not only should I not have to do this - this process is So second rate in the world of watercolor. I’m still Loving Twinrocker paper - that’s just stayed gorgeous as it’s made by a small hand made mill but the cost is prohibitive because I live in Hawaii and it costs as much to ship it as the paper costs. What kind of paper does Jasmine Huang use? - do you know ?? That paper seems to be quite responsive and bright. 🖌 Have you noticed this change in the papers??What paper are you using and do you have a solution for this? I have Such a passion for watercolor and am So struggling with this. Where i used to be joyful heading into painting I now think I have to wrestle another sheet of paper. Wow, that’s a really weird and disappointing experience! Sorry to hear.
I did hear a similar thing about Fabriano getting worse and worse lately, so that’s definitely a possibility.
I personally didn’t feel this with Saunders Waterford, so you may want to give that a try.
I have a large roll of Arches CP I still haven’t opened - will let you know once I do. It’s really a shame!
By the way - did you change anything else? Brand of paint / brushes etc?
I don’t know what paper Jasmine / Chien Chung Wei use, but would be very interested to know!
