    The 4K60 heating is rather interesting. Here is a hypothesis for you. They did not want to release 4K60 oversampled at launch because it would have a short record time before overheating. By giving it to us later, we will be so glad they gave it to us, the limitations due to heat will become secondary. So from a PR perspective waiting to give it to us makes a lot of sense (this coming from an old marketing guy).

      I agree. It's all about the optics of the matter because practically speaking, anyone doing long form 4K60 recording is doing so with a more fully featured video camera. The omission of oversampled 4K60 is 100% just to keep a bunch of TH-cam yahoos from shouting about how it melts down in 20 mins, no better than the OG R5 etc. And yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets added in a firmware update.

    I find these tests pretty interesting. Just yesterday i was doing overheating testing for R5 mark ii . I was running 4K Raw with USBc PD(cos i have one battery lol) I got it more than 2 hrs 10 mins to run the camera with 5 signs of overheating warning level. Then i got bored. More than 2 hrs i have never shoot that long straight continuously.
    My room temp was pretty hot(No Ac) with 27/28 Degree celsius. No windows were open too.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The 4K SRAW is not oversampled like the 4K fine mode. Oversampling is more demanding on the camera so it draws more power and creates more heat.

    The R5ii has been such an amazing upgrade for video over the R5. First, while the R5 has excellent AF for photo, it's only good for video. While it can do a great job, it can easily get confused in complex situations (like lots of people in the scene). So it requires a lot of handholding. The R5ii is almost magical and just reads my mind in what to focus on. The exposure tools and AF are so far above the R5. CLOG2 is a really nice upgrade over CLOG3. The 4k30 is just so beautiful. Another huge benefit is XF-AVC on the R5ii versus the CPU-heavy h.265 10-bit 4:2:2 that the R5 had. So editing video footage from the R5ii is super easy even with a lot of effects enabled. I often had to lower the display resolution with R5 footage to keep editing smooth.

    • @brookscurran
      @brookscurran 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      what system are you editing on? I've had no issues with h.265 on the R5ii so far in resolve

      @Josh_Sattin  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      You're welcome. Yeah this video took a long time to make and many of the tests were not even shown in the video. I don't think this is the camera to use out in the summer heat if you are doing long takes. Thanks for watching!

    Here's a test you should try. And it comes from some theories and observations I made with the Canon V10. It's not exactly the temperature that causes the V10 to overheat. It's the inability for the surrounding environment to whisk away the heat. I had the camera in an enclosed room with no moving air that was around 70F. It overheated fairly quickly when I set it to the skin smoothening filter. But I took that camera outside with even higher ambient temperature but with some air blowing (even when it's warm air) and that was enough to keep the camera from overheating. So the test that would be cool for you to try is to heat the room up but have an external fan just wafting the air around. You don't need to aim the fan at the camera but just have moving air in the room. I think the camera will perform better in that situation (warm room but moving air) than a static room at a lower temperature.

    I’m curious to see how this does in places like Costa Rica. Hoping to have one when I go later this year as my R5 has over heated there before I even started shooting when it’s super hot and humid. R3 and R5C never overheated once.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Maybe I'll have to come with you to Costa Rica so we can test it out! 😉 It will probably depend on how you are using the camera in terms of resolutions, frame rates, pre-shooting, etc. I bet it will be pretty similar to the R5 if you aren't using the cooling grip. R5C and R3 are definitely better with heat management because of the fan and bigger body.

    I updated the R5II with the new firmware update and better battery life for the P Battery. So when the overheating bar starts showing, I stop recording and the camera looses the bars quickly just the same as before the update. But 4k 30 Fine-D around 85 degrees for about 45 minutes before it stopped recording. I started the recording and went inside and forgot that it was on. I was on for about an hour. So the recording saved and I believe that it stopped when the overheating reached the limit. It is set to High Temperature. I do use the Cooling Grip and it works pretty good. I agree not run in Fine Mode. Cheers!

  • @JaredHoyman
    @JaredHoyman 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Once again, excellent comparison. I've been on the fence about purchasing the cooling grip since most of my shoots have been fine. I have had it overheat in 4k 60 when shooting houses, but it's usually because the first 40min is photography and then last 15-20min is video. I'm sure if I ran it from the start in video I would get a longer run time before overheating. I'm curious if you tested transfer speeds from the 2.5gb ethernet vs using the cfast express B directly into your computer? That alone may be worth it for me if it speeds up the process.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks! If you aren't having any issues with your workflow then you probably don't need the grip. I haven't tested the ethernet port and I most likely won't. I find the transfer speeds to be plenty fast when plugging the CFB cards into a card reader.

    Awesome video! I wonder if using a dummy battery will reduce those overheat times. My original R5 has never overheated, but I used a kondor blue dummy battery to Vmount. Waiting for them to bring out an LP-E6P variant! PS, I know there's only a 30min record limit, but do you think that using the LPE6P battery in the original R5 will yield the same results you got with the R5C?

      Thanks! I don't think a cooling grip like this would be possible for the R5 since the R5II is designed for it. The R5II has a path for air to flow through the camera, while the R5 does not. There are some third party manufacturers that make fans that attach to the back of cameras, but I have not tried them.

    I don't get this grip at all man. Why is the fan controlled by the camera??? I would prefer being able to get the fan to run full tilt between shots.
    I'm sure somebody will make a metal cage for this with a powerful fan that you can power when the camera isn't on while being able to fully rig it up. Maybe with the basic controls on a top or side handle.

      The only advantage I see to the camera controlling the fan is that it can turn on the fan when it starts to get hot but you could still have that with a physical switch on the fan. Something like the switches on lenses. Auto_1_2_3 it's never off off but you could have it running when the camera is turned off.
