    Simon I was one of those that bought the EOS 5DS and back then everyone was saying what your saying about a 100MP camera. That camera turned out to be one of the best Canon cameras I’ve ever owned which I replaced with the R5. The R5 never had as good a colour profile as the 5DS and I often regret selling it.
    The EOS 5DS / 5DSr were favourites with pro studio shooters doing fashion and food and this is where I think the 100MP would be aimed at. You don’t need fancy video specs, you don’t need high frame rates but you do need good AF and now there to no mirror the camera is less likely to suffer from vibration which affects high MP cameras.
    The only down side is defraction which would likely arrive at f8.

      Have you ever tried a Fuji Medium format camera? I thought he ate thing about 8K video when I bought the R5, but a year later when I tried 8K I was amazed. Sometimes it just takes us trying something to understand why it is needed.
      When shooting Pixel shift with the R5, I found product and food photography to be impressive. I do understand your viewpoint.

      That is just 1 of the 7 things they need to fix ! Make the readout speed so fast (by whatever means that doesn't hurt the IQ) that they can just leave out that horrendous slapping, breaking, mechanical shutter altogether ! Bigger buffer. Better viewfinder.

    I want more MP but I feel like the sensor tech should be better if it does. Right now 45 is really good for most people. 100 is good if people want to crop in even more I guess unless it offers some better image quality. Fuji and Hasselblad 100mp camera images look great because of the special sensor it has and how it handles color and noise.

      @araavedianfilms 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@Carlos-tm6zk It does seem that's what makes most want to go to Sony vs Canon. Because they are better at that. So you would think they would focus on their main competitor pros and try to beat them at those things, but it seems like they just can't keep up.

    • @Carlos-tm6zk
      @Carlos-tm6zk 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@araavedianfilms I agree that right now Sony is better at sensor making, however, the readout speed of the non stacked sensors makes them basically useless in e-shutter mode, and Canon managed to have a good compromise there in the full frame cameras.
      But I think that people went to Sony mostly because of the marketing hype around them, not so much because of the specs. And in this last year we’ve seen that trend decrease, IMHO.
      Btw, Sony also went the MP route and many fell for it, but then, when they needed the speed or the silence (wedding photography, for example) they probably realized some of Sony’s limitations…

      It is a myth and misunderstanding among amateurs that lenses have a resolution that maxes out at certain mp counts. Lenses that look good at 45 mp will show more details on a 100 mp sensor. Maybe the corners will benefit less, but that‘s okay.

    Great and informative video, Simon. Hopefully the R7ii soon will come too. I am sure that if Canon made a pro 7series, it would sell very good. Put it in a mini r3 body with a 24-26mp stacked sensor. That would have been an amazing sport and wildlife camera for those that don"t want to spend 15-20000 dollar on a camera and a lens. Even if it would cost a bit more, i am 100% certain that it would sell like crazy. I for sure would have been first in the line.

    I don't see a 100mp camera with high frames per second. Even if they solved the data throughput issues with Gen 4 cards, the sheer volume of data generated would be staggering. Nor do I see a demand for a 100mp camera for heavy video work. BUT...for landscapes and studio stills? Sure. I think there would be a lot of people eager for that camera.
    When it comes to a "new segment", for Canon at least, I am seeing some incredible hype over the new Leica Q3 43. It's a 60mp fixed lens retro styled body for "only" $6,895. There ought to be some room for profit margins in that space, especially if all the hype is at all related to impending sales. I'm not sure Canon would ever make a fixed lens body, and they might have to bring out a couple of new compact lenses to really compete, but I don't see that being a show-stopper. But then again, Leica is unapologetic about having one superior fixed lens, so I guess that's a possibility.
    Neither of those cameras would need all the action-oriented autofocus. The 100mp body would really benefit from high dynamic range and 16 bit color depth. The smaller retro body would probably benefit from excellent image stabilization and superior low light capability. And I think both of those cameras could work with just a BSI sensor (not stacked) which would reduce production costs. Both could live with only moderate video capabilities, and at 100mp they might even be able to leave out video completely like the X2D did. Stills photographers need some love, too.
    And maybe they could finally conquer the heat issue completely without the need for a cooling grip.

    A 100+ MP sensor in full frame doesn’t make a lot of sense because of diffraction. I use a Fujifilm GFX 100s for landscape photography. With it, although still usable, diffraction starts creeping in by f11. Probably 60-70mp would be as high as you’d want to go in full frame.

    I hope Canon will reconsider and put out a R7 Mk2 that is somewhat bigger (the current camera is too small), offers a battery grip, and fixes the rolling shutter issues. Even coming in between $2,500-$3,000 I think such a camera will be a big seller for Canon. It would team beautifully with their 100-500mm zoom. All you have to do is look at all the money being spent by wildlife photographers in places like Yellowstone and the Conowingo Dam, hundreds-of -thousands of dollars of gear lined up side-by-side on tripods, to realize the R7 Mk2 would be a very popular camera.

For many it would bring their computers to their knees requiring an updated there, and higher res cameras are only really beneficial in two areas: (perhaps excessive) cropping and printing large. But I still think that 45-60 MP is the sweet spot for FF in terms of high-res. Beyond that and the noise levels may get very high and one reason why I think the other two (Sony and Nikon) have not bothered to go beyond 60MP, because the benefit does not make the "cost" (noise and possible loss of DR) worth it for most people. Plus at 100MP you might as well just get a GFX100s and be done (you'd get much better IQ probably).

    Hi Simon, you have an interesting reading of this rumor, but in some edges I read it differently ;-)
    Given the R1 is still expected in 2024, I'd rather think the 5th body (and the second one not being in a new segment) to be the R7ii which Jan Wegener believes to get a stacked sensor.
    I'd strongly expect some twins next year: the R6iii and retro cam (6R, AE-6, ???) likely get the R3 sensor (with potentially a cheaper AA filter), and then the R7ii and an R9 or R7C also sharing the same sensor, but the vlogging version ditching the EVF. With a rolling shutter-free stacked sensor it could really rock the Sony vlogging crowd. You're correct the R7C was stopped .. as a spin-off of the rolling R7 .. but a cine/vlog variant of the R7ii might also be called R7C.
    A kind of R5s with 0.1gigapickles may now make sense in the Canon market, because it caters for people shooting landscapes, portraits and product shots who are not getting much of an upgrade with the R5ii which eyes mostly filmmakers, sports, wildlife & fast action .. like the men we see in the mirror each morning.
    I'm wondering whether your affected by the northern lights, because it's the second video where you talk as if we're now mid of November ;-) You're not scared of Halloween approaching, are you ?

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I don't know if a stacked sensor makes sensor for the R7 II being prime for wildlife. Dynamic range is needed in dust and dawn the most. If they could implement something else it might be better for us.
      November is on my mind as it is the first trade show I will be attending. Just 26 days away now ;)

    • @WernerBirdNature
      @WernerBirdNature 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@OrdinaryFilmmaker The slow R7 sensor made ES unusable and made the AF less consistent than the R5, even when it was having a newer AF incarnation. And its pre capture was a first attempt and not yet user friendly.
      A stacked sensor comes indeed with a penalty when needing high iso, an area where any APS-C is trailing full frame, but as recently illustrated by Jan Wegener, all other improvements of R5ii over R5 more than make up for the subtle IQ loss in tricky lighting.
      When the R7 receives the same upgrade recipe as the R5, the improvements for wildlife will be felt even stronger than with the R5ii.
      When low light is more crucial than reach, the R6iii should be the better choice, but an R7 provides the same amount of pixels on the birds with much lighter glass.
      Now I get why you're mentally already in November, just watch out for (GnR) November Rain ;-)
      For me November means a day in kingfisher hide, potentially testing new gear in low light 😛

    • @WernerBirdNature
      @WernerBirdNature 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@OrdinaryFilmmaker I know you're thinking Red. But without compromising IQ, even when producing at a larger scale, I'd expect the Red V raptor sensor to still cost the current price of Z9 and Z8 combined.
      I'm expecting the Z9ii only in 2026. And I hate to agree it will likely be better than the R5ii sensor.
      But today, the R5ii has better DR at high ISO compared to both top Nikons. And the R5ii is more performant in Raw. I'm a bit surprised so many people dwell about the DR of the R5ii compared to R5, while nearly nobody stressed this aspect of a stacked sensor when the Z9/8 came out.
      Nikon should urgently bring a high end APS-C like a Z90, who knows with a partially stacked sensor. They have great wildlife glass, but only the 180-600 below $3000. And the Z6iii is still waiting for the bird-eye-AF from his big brother.
      Wildlife needs indeed both dynamic range and speed, but I feel Canon made the right step with the R5ii .. and most likely the R5iii will focus more on increasing DR than further increasing performance

    If Canon made a 100 megapixel camera, with the lenses to support it, and good dynamic range, it would become the camera of choice for every landscape and architecture photographer. If Canon made a pro version of the R7, with 30 or more megapixel, and 20fps, it would become the camera of choice for every wildlife (and consumer sports) photographer (especially if it incorporated a stacked APS-C sensor), to extend the range of their long lenses. I would consider moving from Sony for these two options in my bag.

These acrylics are very unforgiving in regards to image quality, so every pixel counts. I would buy a 100mp camera today if it used the same RF lenses as my R5 II, providing those lenses can resolve to 100mp - the less I need to rely on Gigapixel, the better. Canon doesn't need a 100MP camera. What they need is an R1 with a 45-50MP sensor. Nikon and Sony are laughing at the fact that Canon's flagship might have half the resolution of the Z9 and A1. While a 100MP sensor with the autofocus, video, and speed capabilities of an R1 would be impressive, it would essentially be like Sony's A7R line, where you sacrifice video and speed for higher resolution. Additionally, diffraction issues become a limitation in such high-resolution full-frame cameras. For example, the 60MP A7R IV starts to show diffraction blur at f/7.1, and with a 100MP sensor, you'd likely see it around f/5.6, making many lenses problematic.
    A more practical solution for Canon would be an R1 version with around 45MP, offering a perfect balance of resolution, speed, and video capabilities.

If there was a camera with that amount of megapixels, the price could be lower if you only have to get the body and not the lenses. A 100+ megapixel FF camera could for sure make some people decide not to get a medium format camera plus lenses, but just get that body and use the lenses they have.
    Even some who are put off by the entry price to get into medium format for the higher megapixel cameras, could be "convinced" to get a camera with that high resolution if they can use the lenses and other gear they already own

    I can see it as quite a smart move. 100mp is the domain of Fuji, phase one and Hasselblad, all of which are medium frame and therefore require a whole new lens range to be produced. What if Canon do produce a 100mp camera, in all reality it maybe lower, but just think, a 100 mp camera that relies on existing lens ranges… that is exciting and has the potential to refocus the attention of people tempted to move away from Canon. Let’s not forget, it’s not just about the camera it’s about the eco system. As I mentioned at the start; personally, I think this could be a very smart move as they automatically reduce their manufacturing costs of a new lens range, but, notwithstanding this, they could also attract a whole new customer base who are considering medium format but who put off by the cost of building up an expensive and heavier lens eco system. Just a thought.
