- I don't think anybody in 2011 expected The Weeknd to come back and recreate the brilliance of House of Balloons, but man did he defy expectations with Thursday.
This project widens our view of The Weeknd's world. It doesn't focus on The Weeknd's character, but his partners, his puppets... his victims. And it's shocking. This video runs through that narrative and helps us see ourselves in the manipulation of The Weeknd, and how we can apply it in our own lives.

The bonus track Valerie demonstrates that The Weeknd had feelings for Valerie and that they both knew what they were getting into. In the first verse, he talks about taking responsibility for what he did to Valerie, and in the second verse, he admits that he didn't want to cheat on her and wishes he didn't have to lie to her about it. On the bridge, he admits that he knew what she was getting into, and the reason she didn't stop loving him was because she'd rather be with him than alone. The way The Birds Part 2 is structured, it is never revealed what exactly was shot at the start although two of the main guesses are she shot herself or something else. If the former is true, then Valerie is Abel's letter of guilt and regret over the loss of a former lover; If the latter is true then the former stays the same but with the added aspect of being a direct love letter. Also, in Lonely Star, he mentions her "best friends" being pain and regret, and following the narrative that she shot herself, her best friends have now become mutual friends of both parties, with Valerie because she was cheated on by someone she loved and Abel because he tried to cheat on her and lost someone he loved, and his expression of his feelings are now too late.

Thursday for some odd reason is considered “the ugly stepchild” of the Trilogy but is actually better than Echoes of Silence too me especially with songs like The Birds Pt.2, that song is a deep example of how manipulation can become toxic in a relationship. Don’t get me wrong, Echoes of Silence is great but the Dirty Diana cover kinda started it off wrong because to me that was the first instance of him tryna live up to the Michael Jackson comparisons that he’s embraced even more now. I still love The Weeknd’s music but man do I miss this deep lyrical side of him. Trilogy and Kissland came out a decade ago and I’m still unpacking hidden meanings in them still to this day

"I miss this deep lyrical side of him" Echoes of SIlence has by far the darkest lyrics. Also, even tho Thursday is dope, "baby I can fuck you right" (Lonely Star) is a garbage lyric be honest. Check out Montreal, Outside, Echoes of Silence those have far better lyrics
I’m pretty sure “gone” was The Weeknd flexing. He was faded as fuck and wanted to prove that anything he makes is a bob. I’m pretty sure it’s a freestyle. Just a straight flex of talent. I don’t know where but I read it somewhere , can’t confirm.
I have read reports similar to this as well. I believe he recorded it WHILE he was completely wasted, which would make sense in all realms of perspective
the gunshot in the birds is actually not the girl killing herself. Genius actually annotates that she shoots Abel, or that she shoots one of his other partners out of jealousy. She’s still alive
I’m literally sitting here with my jaw wide open. I listened to the Thursday mixtape all the time back 10 years ago and I never really deciphered the songs and lyrics, I just got lost in the instrumentals and flow of the project. The Birds pt. 2’s breakdown… Jesus… if Euphoria came out in 2011-12, Trilogy is the perfect soundtrack for Season 1. It never occurred to me that that was the death of the Leading Lady of the Thursday story
Excelent, There are some things I'd want to say.
1-Do you have plans on analyzing the 3 tracks that were added on the trilogy version?
2-Rolling stone is confirmed to be a letter to his fans, he knows he'd become popular "how we f*cking got here", he also tells to his fans that he'll be different and "I hope you still listen".
3-We can understand his early persona a little bit more if we visit other projects, for example we now that he's hurt and miserable, the worst he lives the more he'll hide it, we have 2 hidden lines that let us see how bad he felt, "give me real attention or I'll start drowning through my wrist", "I used to pray when I was 16, if I didn't make it then I'd probably make my wrist bleed", so we know that he was really hurt, really. Another example is that we thought he was incapable of falling in love during his old times, until Tears in the rain where he tells that all girls feel the same, except one, he thinks she might been the one, confirming us that he wanted love, or at least was capable of falling in love contrary of what he wanted to do, by my dear melancholy he's in the place of Valerie, codependent and searching for comfort, and when he lost his partner he was very hurt, everything he feared happened.
4-I'd like to see your analysis on XO/The Host, for me along with wicked games is the pinacle of his old sound.

Someone once said If I showed you Thursday before House of Balloons, you’d hands down say it’s the best on trilogy because it’s that good. But HOB is better

@@halfwaydrum2 I think eos is the more alternative, darker sound abel was trying to explore on thursday but fully fleshed out, thursday sometimes have songs that are too long that can feel aimless at points (specially gone), not to mention that eos arguably has his betten written lyrics on trilogy, some of the most unique production in an r&b project ever, and some of his best performances on songs like d.d, montreal, xo/the host and the title track, thursday is an amazing project, don't get me wrong, but when you analyse all 3 mixtapes, it's not hard to see why most fans consider it the weakest between then

I feel like the whole trilogy story behind the 3 mixtapes is something not everyone perceives the same way , The 3 mixtapes are a work of art and not everyone perceives art the same way everyone has a different perspective of things , The Weeknd is basically telling a story with trilogy but there are certain things that are not cleared , so it’s up by yourself to analyze the 3 mixtapes connect them and when you come at a conclusion that’s what you believe what actually happened on trilogy,I feel Abel made it that way on purpose , The Weeknd may be the only one who knows the truth of what really happened on trilogy

I like to see the zone as well as a few other songs on this mixtape as songs about other women. Abel said once talking about his early music he purposely talked about different experiences with different women in different songs
I actually interpret Birds pt 2 as Valerie shooting him in the back and ending their relationship, permanently rebuffing him. She hands back the pills and the narrator says that his back hurts. He focuses on her pain but mentions his physical pain. It’s almost like he is trying to convince himself that he is still in control, even though she ended things with him.

the birds pt 2 is underrated
I was really into this album as a 9 year old up to high school i was dealing with a lot of shit that a child shouldnt be and this album gave me an outlet to feel it all. I will forever be grateful for that. i dont listen to his music much anymore though because i cant get past him grooming bella hadid and i dont have the cd anymore. i dont want to give him anymore money.
I think that behavior is normalized in the xo fandom alot. theres so many pedophiles that groomed me through his music and i really wanna post this comment in case there are other victims that would like to talk about addiction, recovering from abuse, etc. thank you for this analysis!

The way I see it, if you tell the how it's gonna be, and they go along with it, then it's their fault. Manipulation implies that one was lied too. She hurts herself by thinking she's special enough to change his mind, and she found out she wasn't.

The way watching this video made me realize the same thing.
Thursday is my favorite album/mixtape out of his discography. The story telling is immaculate. Gone, rolling stone and Valerie take it for me. The concept of a different girl every day of the week is something that took me surprise. Also Thursday's(the song) melancholic melody gives me something that no other song does, maybe echoes of silence(also the song) but these are rare songs. True underrated gems. And the seamless beat switch in gone goes unnoticed every time.
