Hey everyone. Thanks so much for your support on the Trilogy videos… this means so much to me! Please humor just a few questions from me, I am looking for some of your thoughts: 1: I am aware we want more Weeknd discussion. That will come, trust me :). What I am curious to hear is what OTHER artists or albums you guys would be curious about watching content over. I’ve done Kendrick and Tyler recently but that hasn’t performed as well. Do these artists interest you? If not, who would? 2: I am going to release a comp of all three of the Trilogy videos in one long doc. In order to make the video new and fresh, I am either going to talk about the three songs added in Trilogy, or remaster my House of Balloons video (since I have grown as a creator a LOT since then and I would change a few things about it). My question is: WHICH one should I do? Remaster the HoB video, or talk about 28/Valerie/Til Dawn? It would mean a lot to me and contribute heavily to the future of what I am doing if you gave me your feedback in a quick reply, thank you dearly, my friends!
I would personally enjoy commentary on Frank Ocean ❤️ I feel like that has potential to perform well since Frank and Abel are kind of the two biggest names in the world of 2010s alternative r&b. And I think Frank and Abel’s fan bases have some overlap. Ps I love your commentary on Kendrick and Tyler too!!!
Ngl this is my favourite mixtape from the trilogy. It feels like everyone always views house of balloons as the point where everything changed for RnB. While I do think that there is some kind of truth to that I also think that echoes of silence should get as much as if not more praise for changing RnB as a whole.
I’m actually surprised you didn’t pick up on the pitch shifting up and down in Initiation representing the drugs they are taking… when he mentions weed or lean the vocals get deeper until he talks about doing a line and it starts getting higher and faster and going back and forth between the two as the experience goes on
Obviously. It doesn’t really matter that much that’s why he didn’t mention it but I’m sure he is aware of it. Initiation is literally a perfectly horrifying masterpiece of a song though.
Just watched your whole trilogy. These might be the best video essays I've ever watched and I do not say that lightly. And it's not just because it's about my absolute favourite subject. When I'd read other people's interpretations I'd agree mostly, but have little grievances here and there, e.g. the knowing being about heartbreak. But you have the exact same interpretations as me. And then some. I had to keep pausing to reflect on my own life and 8 year love affair with these projects. I feel I've learnt so much about myself, like a curtain of fucking glass has finally shattered. These videos have actually changed the way I see myself and I will never listen to these songs in the same way again. You've got real talent and I will be watching everything on your channel. Thank you for doing this series
I've listened to H.O.B., Thursday, & E.O.S so much but, it's videos like yours that go in depth about each song from each tape that makes me have a new appreciation for it. Because for me personally and I think XXXtentacion even said this, we can't specifically relate to what he's talking about but it's the vibe and feeling that you enjoy. When you really take the time to listen to what he's talking about and read the lyrics to these songs (specifically the ones in Trilogy & Kissland) that so your so used to having just casually playing, you realize just how dark it is. The scariest part about the songs in his earlier projects is that it's real. There are girls that go through the same thing that the multiple women he sang about in all 3 mixtapes went through. There are guys that live the life Abel did back in the late 2000s & early 2010s for the exact same reasons Abel & the rest of his crew did. & over time those decisions you make take their toll and your left feeling like Abel in the title track E.O.S. Questioning everything that happened up to a certain point & fearing having that same exact feeling come back, even though it was the feeling you were trying to escape in the first place. That feeling being Loneliness. All those times of indulging in activities that bring you pleasure and serve as a distraction for a temporary amount of time won't let you escape for long. It's dark but yet sadly real & relatable for a lot of people. I can see why he say's he hates reliving this era because if he really was doing this stuff down to a T, that's crazy. Orrrr I could just be saying BS lmaooo it's 1:12am as I'm writing this, I need to go to sleep 🤣Great video bro! ~ XOTWOD
Thank you for adding insight to this discussion!! I had a great time reading your thoughts. You make a great point about the sad reality of the Trilogy world - this isn't just fantasy, people live like this! A shame, but a pill we must swallow seeing as we are others who live in the same world :)
You should review Kiss Land next. Seriously it is his most underrated album and on the same level with Trilogy as being his best works. That one would be really interesting to watch.
The best part about XO/ The Host is he calls back lines from house of balloons and Thursday. Drakes north north up top that OVOand that XO line and the lines from house of balloons/glass table girls on return on the host as well
@ true…. True…. But at the same time, the end of the host directly goes into the initiation and what I was trying to say was that is actually from Thursday mixtape in drakes verse for “the zone” which is why I threw that in as a call back. Gotta love mixtapes, where does it end and begin?
When you talk about hair on the back of your neck stand up during The Host, for me it comes when he says “the nights almost done, and who you came with is already gone” as if he has just informed her that she’s basically trapped in this house with just Abel and the boys… and drugs… and what are you gonna do now baby? Walk home?
I hope you'll cover the new Trilogy when the last album of The Weeknd drops probably sometime next year. Would be interesting to see the meanings of After Hours, Dawn FM and ??? in a new light. Would so be here for that :D
pleaseee do the video on the 3 extra songs. also u should just do a series analyzing every album abel has. i think it would be a very popular series bc u explain his work so well!
i first heard high for this in the trailer for the final season of Entourage and i've been a huge fan ever since. I saw the trilogy concert, the kiss land concert, and the starboy concert. there will never be a finer musical creation than the trilogy.
You should definitely do a recap/ short analysis of the Mashup of all Mixtapes the Trilogy Album and talk about the three additional songs that are on it Twenty Eight, Valerie , Till Dawn (Here Comes the Sun) ! Love the three analyses for all three mixtapes though !
Couple thoughts: the Host is a really insightful title. As a proud bio major, a host is the organism that a parasite relies upon to survive. The narrator is the host, the woman is his victim who relies upon him to survive. Also, parasite implies that she means nothing to him and is actually someone who he wants to exact revenge upon. My boys actually had a double meaning. It could be what you discussed. But it could also just be a metaphor for drugs. He uses this same metaphor in Life of the Party and makes it more clear that he is referring to drugs. Also, we don’t hear the narrator discuss any of his male friends beyond any allusions to them that could be interpreted as a double meaning, minus his reference to his friends that make drugs in HOB/GTG. Conclusion: Abel is an insightful and introspective genius and prodigy. It is incredible for anyone to have this amount of perspective on life, let alone be able to so clearly communicate his precise thoughts through subtleties in his music. He was 21 and changed the landscape of 2010s music that also served as a scathing exploration and social commentary of hook up culture, seeking external validation, and self worth.
Thanks for these absolute bangers. I really love to watch you breakdown albums. I'd been following Ken's MMATBS breakdowns, and I really love your way of explaining. As a Weeknd fan, I'd be tuned to see further breakdowns :D. XOTWOD
EOS is my favorite out of the Trilogy! His voice is clean, the story gets even dark and the production is perfect! XO/The Host is my favorite. Montreal is my second favorite! Nothing tops Trilogy!
I’m glad I just found your channel a few days ago, and didn’t have to wait very long for this! You do such a great job diving in to the character of The Weeknd. The genius of Trilogy will never be able to be touched. Also, would love your insights into the bonus tracks
I can't believe you only have eight thousand subs! You're really great at breaking apart music, and analyzing them until they make cohesive sense. ALSO - if you know anything about Dante's Inferno, or American Psycho, or "No Exit." By Jean-Paul Sartre - Echoes of Silence ends on a similar theme of. "This is not an exit." There's no escaping this lifestyle. The irony that he's risen to the top, and can indulge in as much sin and hedonism as he craves - yet will never ever feel satisfied from it. His Hell, and in the end, his punishment for all of his horrible actions is simply apathy. Every shred of vulnerability in Trilogy, whenever his front falls a bit, poses as an opportunity to escape while he still can. But he inevitably misses the mark, and now he'll always be this way. Chasing something that he's never going to find.
I REALLY HOPE YOU SEE THIS, for three days straight I've been looking for the video in the first minute, I know it's an edited version of his "Road to release" documentary but I'm looking for this exact edited version. Thank you
I can’t believe the Weeknd has 110 million monthly listeners and is the biggest artist in the world yet cancel culture hasn’t tried to get him because of Initiation yet. 😂 And ironically The Fall is kind of predicting people will cancel him for it
Absolutely fantastic job on these videos, I've been listening to the weekend since he released Trilogy and I've learned stuff from you that I didn't even think about. You went super deep on this and I appreciate that. XOTWOD
Yo bro great video, the only thing I gotta say as a singer myself is you kept saying that he was using his falsetto, especially on the first 3 tracks. For the first verse and Hook of DD he only uses his falsetto on "heart" and "let me be" at the end of the verse and the end of the first hook. He uses a lot of chest and mixed voice on that song in particular. HOB/GTG the verses are almost entirely his falsetto. No shade bro just trying to help out 🔥
I enjoy your weeknd videos very much. There is something that I've been trying to figure out. Valerie is Thursday, who are the other girls? I'm looking forward to your Kissland video. Any eta?
Good analysis but when you said Abel was pleading the woman to not leave him on the EOS track- that was actually the woman telling him not to leave her life/lie. As her response to his question earlier of why is she such a mosaicist. He uses a higher pitch to show the switch in pov 28:22
It's ambiguous. And that is the point of the song. I don't find the concept of the track/project nearly as interesting under the premise of that interpretation, so I decided to talk about the other way!
XOTWOD! I, a 68 year old woman, loves The Weeknd! My boyfriend says I am obsessed with him. And he is right. I do hope Abel is lead to the Lord and truely knows God before too long. What a perfect person to influence today's youth! We all need thd Lord. X❤O
She's intentionally indoctrinated into an environment where she's taking so many substances that she can't make decisions on her own, and then proceeds to spend the night with The Weeknd and his crew. What would you call that?
Initiation is more likely to be about drugs than.... what you said. All of the lyrics allude to drugs with the exception of the chorus. 'The Boys' however is a collection of different drugs, it makes more sense in context to the rest of the lyrics.

It's not about gang rape. His "boys" are his drugs.

"Baby, come over here and
Ride it out, ride it out
Work that back 'til I tire out
Roll that weed, bring that fire out
Taste that lean when you kiss my mouth
Bed so wet when I eat you out
Girl's friends scream that I'm creeping out
If they're not down, better keep 'em out
Ex-man hollering, keep him out
Hard to let go, I could teach you how
Take a puff of this motherfucking reefer now
Bet a shot of this cognac, ease you out
Just one night, trying to fucking leave you out
Baby, baby"
