In case the google maps thing happens again try bing maps, it shows the blyth without cloud cover.
The shaft is supposed to be an interference fit into the coupling. Couplings are machined to fit the shaft exactly. It looks like rust has eaten away the coupling causing the slackness in the joint.

Blimey that's an expensive fix, new coupling I assume??
