Really enjoyed this video on the boat 👏👏🇬🇧 my father who served in the RAF was based in bridlington and served on the MCU,s 1386 and 1387 😢 memories thank you 🇬🇧🫶🍻
My dad had one of these 70 foot Titans of the seas when I was a baby, we lived on it for 6 years moored off hayling, used to go to school in a 9ft dingy with a 4 hp seagull outboard , Happiest days of my life .
8:22 magnificent. Of all the Service tasks, land, air and sea, during W.W.2 I'd loved to have done it's MTB crew I'd have chosen. Gutsy, daring and brave sailors. Well done keeping the heritage going.
Great video thank you so much for posting! There are 2 MTB boats in rebuild USA. & a couple running (pt658) There is PT 305 a Higgins 80' being rebuilt in New Orleans and due to return to the water on lake Pontchatrain in2017 , she is being refitted with 3 X 1500hp original12 cyl Packard gas engines, with as much of the original control and gear systems as the coast guard will allow.. Pt305 will be the only American combat vessel in service , ( Med service in1943/44). The other is PT728 being rebuilt in port Clinton aviation museum Ohio to run on Lake Erie. This boat is a 72' Vosper design that was built in Annapolis MD and was to be given to Russia but was sold off after the war before being transferred. The boat is being fitted with 2 new 1800hp Mann diesels. It is due to be running this year, 2016. They are close! We were involved in making exact copied of the 4 mk13 torpedoes, & 4 more for pt 305. IPt728 expect to run at design speed. We also got to supply replica intake cowls.
The Ol girl still got it, though it does sound like she needs a couple air compressors bolted onto the exhaust, upgraded Spearfish torpedoes and a MSI Defense DS30b. Great video.
This was a big part of my grandfathers life he was on MTBs I have lots of original WW2 photos of all the flotilla including 102 and its crews, they should be with this vessel
This Vosper MTB 102 looks just like the American Higgins PT Boat. Who was the first to design and build a hull like this? My father was a shipwright and maintained these MTB's. He told me how he was in the process of replacing an engine while tied up along the jetty in Bari Harbour, Italy when the Germans made a surprise attack. Also known as the second Pearl Harbour!
Lovely to see this video, my father Guy Moss was an engineer closely attached to 102 during the war. I remember going with him to visit in Norfolk, that must have been in the in 1980's I think. Great that 102 lives on!
In South Africa these were used in an Air Sea Rescue role if I remember correctly they had Rolls Royce Melin Engines two per screw. Of course the torpedo tubes were removed, so they were very light and I believe they could hit sixty knots. They were based in Langebaan near Saldanha Bay and I did my military service on them .
A very nice day on the sea................I'd love to write a stirring WW II Action Script that would make Allistair MacLean proud..........Something involving MTB's, PT's, Fairey-Swordfish, Spitfire Floats, and the whole nine yards in the Adriatic and Mediterranean
Would love to see MTB 102 with its original engines, imagine 50 knots!! 1300 HP sounds a lot, but 3300 HP from 3 petrol engines...Holy moly scary stuff. Also would be interested in seeing any pictures of original boats central torpedo launcher. Very enjoyable and informative. I had heard of this boat before, but knew nothing apart from its being a fast torpedo boat. 1937 birth year shared with my dear old ma.
That was rather nice to watch I think griff did a really good job vlogging the run... It's a shame they dint gun those cummins even just for a minute those turbos sounded rather nice when spooling up 😄 Rascle media love it haha
Hi 102. I hope this isn't a stupid question, but around June 2015 my wife and I were down in Portsmouth at the naval dockyard there, and I was pleased to see RAF 102 - (even just referred to my pics of her), but comparing these two craft I can't help thinking that they are not one and the same. Especially since somewhere in this video it was mentioned that THIS 102 was a Navy craft. Please put my mind at rest the coincidence of 2 x 102's. Regards Mark in the UK. p.s. For what it's worth: a woman that I work with and her husband now own former RAF 2595 currently moored in Badalona (Mediterranean).
is this the same mtb that was used by the blofield and brundell sea scouts in the 70s and 80s as I was one of leaders many happy memories thanks john porter NZ
There was I believe a post war film made with Jack Hawkins. The story about an ex captain/skipper buying an MTB without weapons of course. The skipper and his crew became smugglers and were constantly going to France and picking up contraband and bringing it back to UK. Of course the police were always trying to catch them and finally did.
You are thinking of "The Ship That Died of Shame" 1955 film. With George Baker, Richard Attenborough and Bill Owen. A great film with lots of MGB action.
when you look at them, there wasn't much there, but geez they done a real good job! quick question, are mtbs much different to mgbs and what motors were you running, my understanding is that there were 3?
I can not figure out who is the responsible captain aboard but having an unsecured anchor on the foredeck is reprehensible an open portholes in the bow at sea well the captain's licence probably has Kelloggs printed on it.
Confused. Anchor is attached to chain in its usual place for stowage - further it is hardly rough so it is not going to skip off the deck is it, just as the port holes being open mean very little when there is no risk of the outside sea coming in. With three ex Royal Navy chaps and a former Oil Tanker Captain on board I kinda think they got things covered.
My Norwegian father Peter Dale was 2 ic on one of these plying from Scotland to the fijords in Norway under heavy anti aircraft gunnery going in to Norway torpedoing German ships and then haveing to do it all again on the way out, plus covert missions at night with the knife killing whole squads of Germans after they were caught raping a Norwegian girl, I know he was scared but he was a hero, his skipper was a tall thin 6 foot 4 blond Nowegian and insisted Mr Dale you will steer a strait course because he could see the tracer coming at him, true story
What a restoration!!!! I look forward to taking a trip on this beautiful boat.

Thank you for this. My father served in MTBs in WW2 and I am reading about these boats in "a prayer for the ship" by Douglas Reeman.
This boat is part of our family heritage. My grandad served on MTB's for the Coastal Forces during WW2.

Real bit of history something special to be looked after..
Thanks for the video, brings back memories of the converted mtb used as a pleasure craft between Bournemouth and swanage, all those years ago

I own MTB 456. She's a recording studio now!
Remember 102 coming up and down the River Yare in Norfolk every Saturday in the 1990 s

I'm extremely surprised to see no one on board wearing life jackets!

john Porter Hi John, yes indeed it was that same MTB I believe.
+The Captain's Blog It was. It was also used in the film "The Eagle has landed"

That exhaust note wow.
shame there are not more of these great boats about
I thought these MGB's were gunned with the QF 2 Pounder 40 mm cannon, and later up gunned to the QF 6 Pounder 57 mm, not a 3 Pounder.
Why has this boat got the same number as the RAF rescue HSL with the black hull based in Portsmouth?
They took her guns away. Probably a good thing. Smart putting diesels in her, though. High octane ... "No Open Flame"
SUPER...
Have they done the distancing sheltering protocols in your area?
Gloriana with thanks to Lord Stirling
My grandfather served on them in the war wish I had more info on him
when you look at them, there wasn't much there, but geez they done a real good job! quick question, are mtbs much different to mgbs and what motors were you running, my understanding is that there were 3?
Used to be three now two Cummins. She has around 600HP each but when in service would have had close on 3,000HP
Fantastic video but gulp... Lifejackets!

Does anyone know if MTB 102 was the vessel that the D Day preparations were review from, by Winston Churchill and Pres. Eisenhower?
Andrew Nichols Yes,When we used her to practice 'Boat Operations' (Royal Ang. T.A.V.R.) 1980's,We were told this as being a proud part of her Service!
Build date ?
Could be done by a better camera. Still a great video
My Norwegian father Peter Dale was 2 ic on one of these plying from Scotland to the fijords in Norway under heavy anti aircraft gunnery going in to Norway torpedoing German ships and then haveing to do it all again on the way out, plus covert missions at night with the knife killing whole squads of Germans after they were caught raping a Norwegian girl, I know he was scared but he was a hero, his skipper was a tall thin 6 foot 4 blond Nowegian and insisted Mr Dale you will steer a strait course because he could see the tracer coming at him, true story
.. the new world will come to the rescue.. not rescue but created.
What is that terrible sound in the soundtrack when it's running
Can you give more info as to what time in the video you hear this sound?
Move your camera to fast , mr. shake.
It’s a Blog shot not by myself in the main - be thankful I shared it at all
I believe the German E boats were better.
Great shame, totally spoiled experience because of lack of experience shooting movies.
It’s not high end stuff this lark. Be thankful I bothered to share it
