The thing about the 25 extra lives that a lot of people don't remember is that before it was VERY hard to get extra lives in Lost World. At the game's launch and not until a few months in. You couldn't get lives by collecting rings. The levels would give you hundreds of rings and yet you never got an extra life, which is why you had to look around the levels for the countdown rings and any loose lives all over the place. So the 25 lives from Amazon gave you something to keep you safe for a bit to avoid early game overs. But then a LOT of people complained about it and Sega eventually added in a patch for you to get lives when you collected rings. The weird part is the 3DS version always had that, Sega removed it in the Wii U version for some reason.
The Superstars DLC was such a shitshow on the Steam version. For the ones who missed it: - When the game released, almost all the DLC from the deluxe edition was available for FREE by accident. - The "Comic book" skins were available (also free) due to the error. When they fixed it, they locked it completely claiming that you can only get it through some goofy promotion from idk which store. - So deluxe people *kinda* got scammed on game release, and the comic book skins are locked away for no real reason. Mania Plus only DLC worthwhile tbh, fairly priced with pretty much an entire game's worth of replayability due to encore + might & ray.
Sonic Frontiers DLC was the best DLCs we got the first one was fun it added Jukebox, Photo mode and New Challenges, the Second one added the Spin dash and the Third one was the best one! we got Playable Characters again since 2006! the Towers were fun to climb and the Final Boss was so much better than the OG, sure it has flaws like the pop in, Master King Koco Trial and that ball puzzle but its still an S Tier Game! at first it was in top 10 but now thanks to the DLCs its at top 5 Along with SA1, SA2, Unleashed and Generations!
Transformed got glossed hard. That game is the reigning champion of bizarre character DLC. Total War, Football Manager, even _Team Fortress??_ When the game was still being supported, people were speculating about Hatsune Miku since she was the runner-up for the original ASR's most-wanted character poll, only to be graced by the iconic mega-star General Winter from Company of Heroes instead. Wild times.
Miku wasn't a Sega character anyway, and the rightsholders are stingy as hell like Sugiyama and Activision. I have no clue if Sega has enough influence to get it done as they got Ralph and Danica Patrick in the game.
as someone who has OCD when my sonic games aren't complete with every DLC and yet some DLC is permanently locked behind different versions, this video targets me, and i understand why😔
It is kind of funny for those who owned the wii port of the 1st game we able to play the dlc stage in transformed that’s in the base game and metal sonic is also playable in it. It was super weird for me as I didn’t know of the stage so playing the classic cup it brought confusion
The issue with recents DLCs isn't exclusive to Sonic, Sega is doing the exact same thing with their other IPs in recent years, just look what they did with Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania and Samba de Amigo Party Central.
Valkyria Chronicles also had this issue, with DLC that rewards players overpowered equipment, or units in the 4th game, upon completion. And since Valkyria Chronicles 2 had PvP, the meta is unfortunately ineffective against DLC owners.
For PC players, at the very least, the PC versions tend to get modded to add back all the content EXCEPT THE RACING GAMES (still no Banjo, Metal Sonic and Egg Hangar for the first Sonic and Sega racing game) -SADX has all the SA1 DLCs -SA2 kinda has almost all of the DLCs -Lost World had the Nintendo DLCs ported -You can pirate Forces since the Joker and Shadow costumes (not the Episode Shadow DLC, thankfully) are not available in some regions. -Frontiers had the Korone DLCs, free JP emote, and the now-JP-exclusive Soap shoes modded back, and are even recognized as DLC by the game
Sonic Adventure also had an extra Twinkle Circuit track "Samba GP" as a VMU download. There are four more racetracks that were never released. And of course there are mods to bring the DLC costumes to the PC version of Sonic Adventure 2 and the crossover levels to Sonic Lost World.
Technically speaking, the earliest bit of DLC for a Sonic game isn't Sonic 3 with Sonic 3 & Knuckles, since that was more so a means to complete the full experience without making a more expensive cartridge. The first is actually for Sonic 2, since with the use of the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge, you can play an updated version of the game as Knuckles called "Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2" which actually had a bit more than just "Play as Knuckles" This included *Keeping your rings from before a special stages upon exiting said special stage *Shields are now grey instead of blue *Slight level layout changes with new paths Very recently at this years SHC, someone actually made a hack of this called "Sonic the Hedgehog, and Miles "Tails" Prower in Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2" (That's the actual title btw) That adds back Sonic & Tails with the new additions present in the Knuckles version.
You should talk about Sonic's appearances in other games and properties, like Smash Bros, O.K K.O, and Lego Dimensions. I don't know of any other examples off the top of my head, but I'm sure you'll find some!
Sonic and DLC are definately a mixed bag to say the least. One one hand you got stuff like Mania Plus or the Unleashed DLCs where it genuinely felt like a true expansion of the game, on the other you got stuff like Origins plus where it feels like Sega has fallen victim to the same "We need to weaponize FOMO to maximise profits with premiumn deluxe editons" mantra that most major game studios have gotten into.
technically it wasn't really. on a technical level, there was nothing preventing it since the dreamcast had internet capabilities and could download to the vmu- that's how the dlc works at a glance. but due to the low storage capacity of the vmu and the fact download speeds were generally pretty pitiable back then, almost all the dlc for dreamcast games was already on the disc, and the downloaded part was simply a key to access that content, which is why almost all dreamcast dlc was free and was typically just special events and small cosmetics, things you wouldn't miss if it wasn't there or things that are neat but don't make much sense to throw in without an event or holiday justifying it.
I questioned Spnic dlc the most when Generations released. Really made me feel how the games were released and done with while fans picked up after them and showed its potential beyond.
Unleashed's DLC level design is exactly what I need the next game to have for post-game unlockables or something. Also kinda confused why they haven't added more seasonal costumes to Frontiers considering how many existing designs they have via Sonic Channel. Oh well
I'm currently replaying Generations, a remaster of that would be great. Add in a few more stages, Tails ad Knuckles as playable charters, some gameplay tweaks and it would be well worth rebuying.
0:59 I’d rather have pre order bonuses be as lame as 25 lives than being gatekeeped out of a cool cosmetic option that appears in a lot of the gameplay (Lego Eggman superstars pre order dlc or the comic style Amazon skins) Also frontiers digital deluxe sucks because they stuck the middle finger at physical buyers for not allowing us to buy it separately
Superstars easily has the worst dlc because of the bs to try and get it all on ONE version Lego Eggman - Pre Order (Full Price) Lego Tails, Amy, Knuckles - 70$ Comic Style Skins - 40$+ at krogers points rewards It’s awful I’m sorry but frontiers did it best regardless if it’s a “should’ve been in the base game” it was atleast all free and it didn’t felt like they were trying to drain my wallet
Sonic game to get dlc outside of a pinball table: Red button: One of the most infamous and hated video games of all time Blue button: One of the most critically acclaimed 3d sonic games, with a large array of assets and an opportunity to bring back a sea of past levels Sega: Jim Carrey pressing the red button
The Lives DLC is what convinces me that Sega made parts of the game intentionally frustrating. I remember when the game came out, there was a limit to how many lives you were able to get from rings. Lives felt pretty scarce. I'll be open to it being a skill issue, but i remember later updates removing that lives limit, and other stuff that made the game more fair and bearable in other areas.
@@miadatenshi9903 because the difficulty wasn't fair, most ot the time(before the patch)imo. Its why I thought it was bad(Part of the reason) other than the fact that it took the flaws of the base game, and made them worse. Ofc, after the patch, I found it to be decent, but very flawed.

I did make a comment discussing my thoughts on it, pre-patch, but here is some of them: It's unclear how to beat the final boss, at a certain point. Also, its bad that you have to 100% the island to get told what to do, when that should had been in the tutorial. The new version of parry kinda sucks. I eventually had to spam it to reliably dodge attacks. The pop-in is still a massive issue. The final trial is just bad. Ofc, I didnt hate it, mind you. I just thought that it was bad. However, after the patch, most of the unfairness was made fair, I believe. Also, I loved the cyberspace levels, and also found those to be the best part of both versions(base and Update 3), and I only go back to play those. Oh, and speedrun the titans, ig. Pre-patch, I thought it was bad. Post-patch, it was decent, imo. Ofc, you can think differently, but you are wrong that you thought that everyone wanted it to be hard. @@Hyp3rSonic sorry dude everyone complained about the base game being too easy. They simply heard the complaints and did a good challenge for experienced players. Is it hard? Yes. That was the intent. It's the final part of the whole game of course it would bring difficulty. Final Horizon is for experienced Sonic fans who waited for it, simply put
@@miadatenshi9903 while I respect your opinion, I still thought that most of it was unfair(originally), and I go stand by most of what I think about the update.
For the ones who missed it:
- When the game released, almost all the DLC from the deluxe edition was available for FREE by accident.
And then a lot of people, myself included, opted to not get it on PC at all because of the forced Epic integration for online.
Also that, fortunately they recently deleted that requirement completely (with and without crossplay) on this week's patch@@TARDISES
The store is Kroger, who better still, doesn't actually offer the Comic skins for the PC version. Only consoles.
oof 💀@@SetsuneW
How did Sega fuck up something as simple as DLC for Sonic Superstars?!
All of that could have just been in the base game imo
@@SlimeBlueMS but they did not because they did not have enough time but hey I’ll take it!
Jesus dude the extra music mode ain't worth it lol
@@SlimeBlueMS extra music mode?
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed also had the Outrun Bay level and Ryo Hazuki as DLC, which were both pretty neat!
It is kind of funny for those who owned the wii port of the 1st game we able to play the dlc stage in transformed that’s in the base game and metal sonic is also playable in it. It was super weird for me as I didn’t know of the stage so playing the classic cup it brought confusion
If Sonic and Knuckles counts as DLC, then sonic's OG DLC was epic
1:00 considering how stingy the game was at offering extra lives at launch, this did make some sense
You didn't mention the Japan Exclusive Korone Sound Effects DLC for Frontiers. Probably because it's Japan Exclusive.
Sonic dlc has been very crazy
And Sega says they want to surpass Mario! Yeah, if they keep doing this bullshit, then no!
What exactly does that have to do with anything? And when has anyone at SEGA ever explicitly said that? This ain’t 1991 anymore dude
You sound familiar
He can make a really good impression of his friend Mark.
Completely forgot you had this sonic channel, I am so glad I found it again 😍
1:25 little did we know
The issue with recents DLCs isn't exclusive to Sonic, Sega is doing the exact same thing with their other IPs in recent years, just look what they did with Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania and Samba de Amigo Party Central.
They're giving Samba De Amigo a 9th unannounced dlc pack this month
Valkyria Chronicles also had this issue, with DLC that rewards players overpowered equipment, or units in the 4th game, upon completion.
And since Valkyria Chronicles 2 had PvP, the meta is unfortunately ineffective against DLC owners.
This guy pronounces “game” in the same way Fred from Scooby Doo says “treasure”
2:59 Silent Dreams, the goat of Sonic remixes
For PC players, at the very least, the PC versions tend to get modded to add back all the content EXCEPT THE RACING GAMES (still no Banjo, Metal Sonic and Egg Hangar for the first Sonic and Sega racing game)
-SADX has all the SA1 DLCs
-SA2 kinda has almost all of the DLCs
-Lost World had the Nintendo DLCs ported
-You can pirate Forces since the Joker and Shadow costumes (not the Episode Shadow DLC, thankfully) are not available in some regions.
-Frontiers had the Korone DLCs, free JP emote, and the now-JP-exclusive Soap shoes modded back, and are even recognized as DLC by the game
You never mentioned the Sonic DLC for Lego Dimensions.
The first is actually for Sonic 2, since with the use of the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge, you can play an updated version of the game as Knuckles called "Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2" which actually had a bit more than just "Play as Knuckles" This included
*Keeping your rings from before a special stages upon exiting said special stage
*Shields are now grey instead of blue
*Slight level layout changes with new paths
Very recently at this years SHC, someone actually made a hack of this called "Sonic the Hedgehog, and Miles "Tails" Prower in Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2" (That's the actual title btw) That adds back Sonic & Tails with the new additions present in the Knuckles version.
Silent Casino Night was RIGHT there.
You should talk about Sonic's appearances in other games and properties, like Smash Bros, O.K K.O, and Lego Dimensions. I don't know of any other examples off the top of my head, but I'm sure you'll find some!
4:44 I don’t like being called out like this Mr. Splash Dash
“Wonder what they might do next!”
-they proceed to make an Apple Play exclusive game-
I would say that Unleashed DLC was the most fun for me.
The rebok contest winner was given a personalized dreamcast kiosk all sonic themed and everything and that winner watched sonic central on it
Sonic and DLC are definately a mixed bag to say the least. One one hand you got stuff like Mania Plus or the Unleashed DLCs where it genuinely felt like a true expansion of the game, on the other you got stuff like Origins plus where it feels like Sega has fallen victim to the same "We need to weaponize FOMO to maximise profits with premiumn deluxe editons" mantra that most major game studios have gotten into.
little did he know we are getting dlc for sonic generations a few months later
It's not a dlc. Its a rerelease
One of those moments where im happy i got sonic origins as a gift rather then buying it myself
I didn't know it would be possible to give something like that during Dreamcast
technically it wasn't really. on a technical level, there was nothing preventing it since the dreamcast had internet capabilities and could download to the vmu- that's how the dlc works at a glance. but due to the low storage capacity of the vmu and the fact download speeds were generally pretty pitiable back then, almost all the dlc for dreamcast games was already on the disc, and the downloaded part was simply a key to access that content, which is why almost all dreamcast dlc was free and was typically just special events and small cosmetics, things you wouldn't miss if it wasn't there or things that are neat but don't make much sense to throw in without an event or holiday justifying it.
Man, Sonic '06 DLC sure does exist.
I am just shocked that I never found out Sonic Adventure had DLC like this ever, and am just finding out about this now.
Fun fact, if you get sonic four episode two on mobile, you will get episode medal. And you won’t need to get episode one
I questioned Spnic dlc the most when Generations released. Really made me feel how the games were released and done with while fans picked up after them and showed its potential beyond.
Can't believe Sonic 06 DLC actually exists
Notice how he put lego dimensions in the thumbnail but never talked about
"Silent Forest"
Silent Night of the Werehog
boy wish he got fired for that blunder
This was my first splash dash video I ever watched
I remember getting the Lost World DLC for free. The Zelda one was really confusing but the Yoshi one was passable.
Unleashed's DLC level design is exactly what I need the next game to have for post-game unlockables or something. Also kinda confused why they haven't added more seasonal costumes to Frontiers considering how many existing designs they have via Sonic Channel. Oh well
lsmark is that you
FINAL HORIZON ISNT A DLC, ITS A GODDAMN UPDATE
I'm currently replaying Generations, a remaster of that would be great. Add in a few more stages, Tails ad Knuckles as playable charters, some gameplay tweaks and it would be well worth rebuying.
when you realize how groundbreaking sonic 3 and knuckles was unfortunately

Truly the best sonic OST ever
By the way, what's this Sonic soundtrack though?
@@elmemearana it’s sonic spinball options menu
@@jtgamer1907 oh, right. As I doubted lol
If they make superstars plus it’s all over
0:59 I’d rather have pre order bonuses be as lame as 25 lives than being gatekeeped out of a cool cosmetic option that appears in a lot of the gameplay (Lego Eggman superstars pre order dlc or the comic style Amazon skins)
Also frontiers digital deluxe sucks because they stuck the middle finger at physical buyers for not allowing us to buy it separately
Superstars easily has the worst dlc because of the bs to try and get it all on ONE version
Lego Eggman - Pre Order (Full Price)
Lego Tails, Amy, Knuckles - 70$
Comic Style Skins - 40$+ at krogers points rewards
It’s awful I’m sorry but frontiers did it best regardless if it’s a “should’ve been in the base game” it was atleast all free and it didn’t felt like they were trying to drain my wallet
fun fact sonic 06's DLC will be lost media in a few days
Sega always feels like they're we behind the industry by a good decade I swear
LEGO Dimensions was how I got into Sonic, and is still a great DLC to this day.
actually superstars is going to get dlc in 2024 and I hope that is more story content like mania
Babe wake up splash dash posted
The Lost World DLC had a lot more spirit than the Force... It's strange that frontiers is free.
and mania new playable cool
8:00 wait it's rumored that sonic generations had cut secret rings and black knight stages that's news to me!
Slowly waiting for him to talk about the Sonic Boom 3DS games
the lego skins are the best dlc sonic has ever gotten since all the rouge costumes, so in other words; its peak.
I like to think if splash dash had a persona itd be a vaguely familiar orange haired man with sonic man helmet on obscuring his face lol

YOGSCAST MENTIONED!!! WTF IS A FINISHED MINECRAFT SERIES!!!!
Sonic game to get dlc outside of a pinball table:
Red button: One of the most infamous and hated video games of all time
Blue button: One of the most critically acclaimed 3d sonic games, with a large array of assets and an opportunity to bring back a sea of past levels
Sega: Jim Carrey pressing the red button

"What the fuck is a Yogscast?"
I AM ROLLING LMFAO
Nah the 25 lives for Lost World is Intentional for that Lava level on rails for sure.
Amy should've been playable in the base origins game. But this series is too cheap to make 4 sprite sets at once
Knuckles especially , it’s so baffling you have to pay $5 to even play him in cd, they couldn’t even do a small update for him
Just clicked on it since this interesting, not expecting that LS mark was going to be here
The Lives DLC is what convinces me that Sega made parts of the game intentionally frustrating. I remember when the game came out, there was a limit to how many lives you were able to get from rings. Lives felt pretty scarce.
I'll be open to it being a skill issue, but i remember later updates removing that lives limit, and other stuff that made the game more fair and bearable in other areas.
Oh good a splashdash video
SONIC HAD A ROUGH TRANSITION INTO-
Dear god, the hate for Update 3 is so forced, how can you dislike it so much just because it's difficult?
@@miadatenshi9903 because the difficulty wasn't fair, most ot the time(before the patch)imo.
Its why I thought it was bad(Part of the reason) other than the fact that it took the flaws of the base game, and made them worse.
Ofc, after the patch, I found it to be decent, but very flawed.
@@Hyp3rSonic how was it not fair? Set the game easy, the parry is a joke. Set the game hard, surprise, the game is hard as you requested.
@@miadatenshi9903 the thing is, I didnt request for it to be unreasonably hard. Also, I usually play games on the easiest difficulty.(unless you get more rewards on higher difficulties, then I might change it)
Also, it didn't matter what difficulty I chose, the flaws didn't went away. I still thought that most of it was unfair. My thoughts weren't gonna change if I played on easy, normal, or hard. I would had still thought that the update has a ton of problems. I did make a comment discussing my thoughts on it, pre-patch, but here is some of them:
It's unclear how to beat the final boss, at a certain point. Also, its bad that you have to 100% the island to get told what to do, when that should had been in the tutorial.
The new version of parry kinda sucks. I eventually had to spam it to reliably dodge attacks.
The pop-in is still a massive issue.
The final trial is just bad. You have to play almost perfectly, and if you fail, you have to do the long 2nd section(Wyvern) idk why they included the climbing parts, since the 2nd one kinda drags on.
I was one of the few people who didn't want that. Also, no, I wont change my mind. However, im interested to hear your thoughts about it. I hope that made sense, and that I wasn't being rude.
I always thought this when I beaten the update. Now, the base game and update 3 are both decent, but very flawed, imo. It's about on the same level of quality of Forces, except Forces is slightly bette, I think. No, I also won't change my mind on that, for now
@@Hyp3rSonic sorry dude everyone complained about the base game being too easy. They simply heard the complaints and did a good challenge for experienced players. Yes, cause Final Horizon is for those who wanted more from the base game. If someone went on their way to play it, they aren't a casual player, but a player who spent hours with the mechanics and all. the final trial isn't that hard if you know how to speedrun the bosses, wich is what every player who played the game till the release of Final Horizon did. Is it hard?
Also, back then, I only beat the game once. That means that I only beat each titan once(I think)
However, I found the 2nd trial kinda easy
Speaking of that, I still find the open zones to be the most flawed aspect of the base game, so that might be why I wasn't so excited when they announced the DLC.
Also, I spent most of my time in frontiers speedrunning the cyberspace levels, as I find that the most fun. I had like 120 to 130 hours of playtime back then(I think)
the original dlc was sonic and knuckles attached to sonic 3
Amy is literally the only reason why I would even consider playing Origins.
"wtf is a yogscast" with child me as an autistic fan of both sonic and the yogs, I didn't even know for years that collab happened
