Replacing the traction drive friction wheel assembly in a Craftsman Murray Snowblower

    In this video I demonstrate how to replace the rubber friction drive wheel in a Craftsman (Murray) Snowblower. This procedure should also apply to snowblowers made by Ariens, John Deere, Noma, and likely many others. As far as I'm aware ALL two-stage snowblowers use a friction drive, although there may be slight variations in the design and replacement specifics. I explain the job basically from start to finish, in real time, as someone who has never tackled replacing this part before. The replacement drive wheel costs around $20 and the replacement took me about 30 minutes to complete. One thing I learned while doing this project is that I would highly advise wearing disposable gloves, as this was a lot messier of a job than I had anticipated. The traction was GREATLY improved on my unit by doing this repair.

    and the part number for the drive wheel disc is:
    Murray 1501435MA

    Sir, if you'd like to make this project easier for you in the future, please remove BOTH wheels to facilitate the removal of the friction disk shaft. Afterward, you can grease the wheel axe with an antiseize compound. Hope this helps.

    Also, moving forward, please keep track of all parts and components that are part of the snowblower rear axle mechanism.

    This guy should know better to move the shift lever to the center of the drive wheel for more room!!!! FAST EDDY...

      He accomplished hos goal. I think I would have torn things down a bit more. That sprocket and chain. While your in there. May as well do it all.

      1st thing he should have done was remove all the linkage to the forks, so they move easily, makes it easier to put back together!!

    I'm losing my mind (!) I have a 536.887993 which is identical to yours and had to free up a rusted solid hex shaft slider assembly. I reassembled EXACTLY as you have and cannot get close with the speed lever adjustment.
    I don't know if anyone bent anything trying to shift it. I am fairly sure I didn't mess up the slider when pounding if off the hex shaft.
    There is a gage measurement of 4-5/16 for the 16" tire and when I do that, the edge of my rubber tire is touching the centerline of the driving plate (other blowers never operate the tire within 1/4 - 3/8" of the centerline) AND I'd have to radically bend the shift lever to go in the F1 detent.

      Did you put the friction disk on the hex shaft in the right direction. That is easy to do.

    You are making it hard on yourself, by not putting the bolts in the friction disk first and then assemble the rest of the shaft. Much easier that way. Been there a hundred times

      You can always go back in your video to see where the washer came from. It goes on after you put the disk on the shaft. But I'd have wiped down the disk and the plate w alcohol to ensure that there won't be any slipping. Because it can definitely happen

    Also not good to tip the snowblower up in that direction, it will cause oil to get get caught up in small pockets and when you run it for a little your gonna add oil cuz it appears to be low, when it really isn't
    I repair small engines for a living professionally. Just trying to help

      That's how the manual tells you to pull it into service mode. If you add a little more oil after who cares. It'll be fine or burn off.
