My dad was something of a mouthpiece collector and I have now several interesting pieces including that exact parabolic and a Parduba double cup, neither of which I have ever actually played in a horn. As a tuba player I have never really believed much in gimmick mouthpieces. It was fascinating to see this somewhere else other than my mouthpiece collection.

Thank you for the comment about stores not having a variety of mouthpieces for you to try to figure out what works best for you and the horn you are playing. I guess best bet is to order 10 spend a few days with them and then return the lot you can't use. Times have changed for the worst. Used to be a shop would have like 4 makes of tubas, and you'd play each make, and then after picking the make/model that worked, you then would try each tuba of that line they had, and see which one fit best, then try mouthpieces. Really hard to get a instrument that fits these days.

Trent, in one of your videos regarding puffing cheeks, you mentioned a possible asymmetric mouthpiece that conforms to the curvature of the face. Would that sort of mouthpiece be worth while enough to be made?

in germany, you can actually go to a shop and take several mouthpieces with you and try them at home for about two weeks. Or you can even call the manufacturer himself and order a few mouthpieces for testing. The option of sending the unwanted mouthpieces back is actually free in most cases.

I had tons of issues finding a mouthpiece for my Cimbasso that worked for everything and eventually just took it to a convention and played about 10 mouthpieces and finally found my best sound to be on a Warburton 25s but there are not even a ton of shops for Tuba players sadly even in Florida. I highly recommend taking your instrument to the largest convention you can find for brass and usually they bring about 40+ mouthpieces per large vendor.

I just took delivery on a Wedge 1 1/2G bass trombone mouthpiece in which opposing sides of the mouthpiece are slightly shaved down. This give the impression of an oval form. The non-shaved ends are marked with a small dot, which need to be perpendicular to the horizontal plane. I'd love to get your impression of these mouthpieces. My bass bone (Yamaha 822g Xeno) is in the shop so I've only been playing this on my John Packer-Rath large bore tenor (332O). A lovely english designed and Chinese built trombone, btw. The feeling is no where near as weird as I'd expected IF I play as designed. If I flip it on it's side, so that the dots are in the corners, then it is a weird feeling. What I wanted to say is, that except for the last playing excerpt, I found your tone mellower and more pleasing with the Cauffman mouthpiece. Full and didn't sound laboured.

@@kenzieford3612 - A lot of water under the bridge. I ordered a Wedge S59 after not having been 100% sure with the 1 1/2. At first I thought it would be too large, but it has turned out to be the mouthpiece I use for 99% of what I play on the Yamaha. I had to learn how to play both low and high on it and now have a usable range on the 822g starting f below bedal B-flat and going up 4 1/2 octaves to the high c above high b-flat. I take my time warming up the higher register, concentrating mostly on the middle to low registers. My daily test is to play a lightly tongued arpeggio from that pedal f up to the c and back down on one breathe. I keep the 1 1/2 around, but haven't played on it for maybe a year. Once I practiced the Creation and it was just a little too heavy with the Wedge, but worked very well, almost like a bass sackbutt with my old Yamaha 58. The Wedge S59 can give me a gutsy or a mellow sound, depending upon how I approach it. It slots terrifically, only being 2nd to my Hammond 21BL - which slots perfectly, but is otherwise too large for me. But also, it's way more comfy than any other mouthpiece and I do actually have more endurance with it than any other mouthpiece. On the tenor side, I sold the John Packer and bought a Rath R400 which is miles better. I combined that with a Wedge 4g - that took a lot of experimenting and sent back a Wedge 4.5g and a Wedge 5g before settling on the Wedge 4g. I don't play it often, the last time being when I played 2nd on Schumann 4th. first half of the program was on the 822g, and the 2nd was on the Rath, mostly because the normal 2nd bone player had some medical issues and couldn't get up high enough, so I, the bass-bone guy, had to jump in and she did the bass bone part and I took the tenor. Worked well. Hope that helped.

Please do a review on a monette mouthpiece. I think that they are the best mouthpieces and do not sacrifice anything for tone and playability and everything like that. It simply has everything. I would really like to see you put this to the test. Their latest and greatest model is the resonance line. I have one in the mail right now
I knew a high school band director who told all his trumpet players to use Bach 3C mouthpieces. I think expecting every player to be well-suited to the same mouthpiece displays profound ignorance. Additionally, he was an egotistical, know-it-all, arrogant bastard. There, it said it.
Trent, you need to try a WEDGE mouthpiece. They feel like a custom fit facial glove. The owner is a Canadian trumpet-playing medical surgeon. Don't blow this off now, you won't regret it. They may just give you one for a review.

Trent, are there any mouthpieces for a straight Tenor Trombone that can bring out the deep register? In other words, the "opposite" of a Kelly screamer that really unleashes the extreme register. Is there any mouthpieces that can make low notes easier to play, i.e. The Eb 2 or D2 or C2? (Any mouthpieces that can slightly break an instruments playing limitations, like the tenor bone can't play anything past an E2 below the staff unless you got a lifetimes work of experience)
Spartacus Legends Schilke 51D. It's marketed as a Euphonium mouthpiece, but I use it for trombone. It has a deep cup and a small throat, allowing you to hit high and low notes while having a full sound.

Have you played any of the Denis Wick Heritage mouthpieces? Are they any better than the cone shaped DW mouthpieces and worth the extra money (specifically for bass trombone)?
Think you need to spend a few days in the better country and go to some of the brass shops in Melbourne. They have massive selections of mouthpieces there that you can play for hours on end!
It seems to me that any mouthpiece would need getting used to and in the same breath world have a different effect on other players. Have you given others to try this asymmetric mouthpiece to get a wider assessment of it's potential?
I can attest, this style of rim is not the standard at all for assymetric mouthpieces. Generally it's a round rim with a metal extention going into the cup that your bottom lip is supposed to rest upon
I play the trumpet and when I bought it I got two mouthpieces in with it which had 5b and 14bc on them just I couldn't see or hear any difference between them and I'm curious if anyone knows what the difference is between them
Perhaps different point of view provided by horizontal VS vertical application of the mp would be more instructive...I have used the piece in its horizontal/proper position in combination with a variety of cornets with solid results (pedals to peak). One's mouth/lip/teeth/ etc. (embouchure)of course, as you alluded to indirectly, will determine mouthpiece choice in any case. In my case ribbon thin lips moderately narrow mouth and tight curvature of teeth. My point isn't that this piece was formed for my mouth type .. just that few universal judgments can be made regarding the value or correctness of a piece...which could lead me into my questioning the acceptance..industry style/common music director accepted...of starting children/adults of all shapes and sizes on a 7C. Interesting share though Trent and well worth watching.
First and second valve or third valve? Which one do you do? Is there a proper way? I know that third = first + second but have always just done first and second.
I agree with Trent. For example, I noticed that 3rd valve tends to be more consistent and closer in tune one concert tuba. While on sousaphone 3rd tends go flat a little more often, depending the model.
Mr. Hamilton, I ask you a question based on you extreme depth of knowledge. I have an antique E-flat Alto horn but it has no mouthpiece. What would you recommend as a suitable replacement. Thanks in advance!

The trouble with mouthpieces is that what works for me won't necessarily work for you. I'd see if you can find somewhere in your region that you can go to and test several options out.
The Asymmetric sounded about the same on lower notes, but as thee notes bot higher it sounds more and more like a sock has been shoved into the instrument to me.
Nicholas' Trombone I know I’m 2 years late on this but checkout Wedge mouthpieces. It’s not quite an asymmetrical mouthpiece like the one he shows in this video but it’s interesting and they seem to sound good to me
With my current mouthpiece, I find it harder to hit high notes. I play mostly first part so high notes are obviously expected. Would you know of any trombone mouthpieces that have a history of high notes? If that makes any sense.
If you're playing a small-bore tenor trombone, the 6½AL is a bit large for the high range. If you want to stay in the Bach type, try (progressively smaller) a 7C, an 11C, or - the smallest - a 12C. I prefer Schilke mouthpieces - such as a 47, a 47B, or (smaller) a 45 or 45B. All of these will make it easier for you to play high notes. Good luck.
Lemonsqeezerz4 For larger bore, I recommend either Yamaha 48 or Back 6.5AL. Personally, I’d use the Yamaha just cuz it is a bit smaller and brighter than the Bach equivalent, in my experience. Those are the smallest ones for large shank, at least that I know of anyway. Anything smaller would require a shank adapter. And Just curious, what mouthpiece do you currently use?
Hi, I just wanted to say I love your videos, and have inspired me and I have learned a lot about brass instruments. Later on I'm planning on being a brass or band teacher. I play tuba, and should I learn to play different instruments, or wait until college? Also, if you can find one, a video on the serpent would be fun!
5naxalotl If you really want to be technical, the idea behind "typical" mouthpieces is to have radial symmetry (or rather, to be a perfect circle), meaning that if you were to cut the circle in half perfectly through the center from any possible angle, you would have two indiscernible halves. However, it is impossible to say the same about these asymmetrical mouthpieces, meaning they lack the radial symmetry of other mouthpieces, thus making them *radially asymmetrical*. So yes, technically, the term asymmetrical is still correct.

There are mouthpieces that do this already. I don't know what they're like to play with.

It does a decent job of adding some trumpet timbre to the cornet.. not that you'd ever want that. Gimmick.

It depends on the instrument you're using - sometimes 1+2 will be out of tune when 3 alone isn't.

Hi Mike, when you say antique, how old are you talking?
Well I'm not totally sure... it is a "Champion Chicago" branded horn that could be anywhere from 1890's to 1920's

hey. im 16 and ive been playing trumpet for about 6 years. ive been wanting to by a couple new mouthpieces to try out as expiriments and was wondering if you had any suggestions? maybe like 100$ maximum...?

The trouble with mouthpieces is that what works for me won't necessarily work for you. I'd see if you can find somewhere in your region that you can go to and test several options out.
exactly. i dont have that anywhere near me though. just looking for some unique mouthpieces to experiment with.
The Asymmetric sounded about the same on lower notes, but as thee notes bot higher it sounds more and more like a sock has been shoved into the instrument to me.

i find the same thing with my trombone mouth pieces for loud or high pitched music i use my bach 7c mouth piece but for long songs i use my king m21

Nicholas' Trombone I know I’m 2 years late on this but checkout Wedge mouthpieces. It’s not quite an asymmetrical mouthpiece like the one he shows in this video but it’s interesting and they seem to sound good to me

With my current mouthpiece, I find it harder to hit high notes. I play mostly first part so high notes are obviously expected. Would you know of any trombone mouthpieces that have a history of high notes? If that makes any sense.

If you're playing a small-bore tenor trombone, the 6½AL is a bit large for the high range. If you want to stay in the Bach type, try (progressively smaller) a 7C, an 11C, or - the smallest - a 12C. I prefer Schilke mouthpieces - such as a 47, a 47B, or (smaller) a 45 or 45B. All of these will make it easier for you to play high notes. Good luck.

Lemonsqeezerz4 For larger bore, I recommend either Yamaha 48 or Back 6.5AL. Personally, I’d use the Yamaha just cuz it is a bit smaller and brighter than the Bach equivalent, in my experience. Those are the smallest ones for large shank, at least that I know of anyway. Anything smaller would require a shank adapter. And Just curious, what mouthpiece do you currently use?
Hi, I just wanted to say I love your videos, and have inspired me and I have learned a lot about brass instruments. Later on I'm planning on being a brass or band teacher. I play tuba, and should I learn to play different instruments, or wait until college? Also, if you can find one, a video on the serpent would be fun!

technically, it's LESS symmetrical than a normal piece
5naxalotl If you really want to be technical, the idea behind "typical" mouthpieces is to have radial symmetry (or rather, to be a perfect circle), meaning that if you were to cut the circle in half perfectly through the center from any possible angle, you would have two indiscernible halves. However, it is impossible to say the same about these asymmetrical mouthpieces, meaning they lack the radial symmetry of other mouthpieces, thus making them *radially asymmetrical*. So yes, technically, the term asymmetrical is still correct.
