I played a gig many years ago with a trombone player who had an unusual mouthpiece. I’m a trumpet player but I asked him about it. It is somewhat similar to the Jerwyn that you are showing here. The major difference is that the cup didn’t screw into the rim barrel, it moved freely in the rim barrel but was restricted from movement with springs that were adjustable by screwing a knurled shell in or out which changed the amount of pressure required to change the position of the cup. The idea was that as you went up in register the added pressure would make the mouthpiece shallower and deeper as you went into the lower register. Kind of a novel idea. He said he designed and fabricated himself on a Sears and Roebuck lathe. I wish I could remember his name. Thanks for showing this.
I like the Jerwyn mouthpiece idea. There is another similar idea called, "Sarad". I don't know if it is as good as the Jerwyn, but I am thinking of buying it. I would love a color trumpet t-shirt. Thanks for your video. Sincerely, John.
I watched the end of this video and would like a T-shirt - the color trumpet one please? thanks and love learning all about the inner workings of the trumpet from you Jason!
Jason i stuck around and watched until the end. Id like a Harrelson hat to go with all my other Harrelson gear. It has been fun and musically rewarding to be and take part of your innovations to the trumpet.
Yes, I would like a t-shirt, either model is fine. I can pick it up when I am there in July. It will be good to wear here in Brazil to spread the word about where to buy world class trumpets.
Yes I want a harrelson 25th anniversary color hat. I love the spectra tone yellow and am really tempted to get into the blue as well since I chase that more flugelhorn/cornet sound for small group work.
Thank you for watching our channel and for the feedback. I am glad you're finding them interesting. Stay tuned for more videos and more chances to win!
I think the technology of the mouthpieces you make is amazing. It's more advanced than when Stomvi was doing this and it makes so much more sense. The best part is being able to change the sound that I want with just a rim, or a throat or a cup and not sacrificing the integrity of my playing and the horn to do it!
I JUST saw the video about the Jerwyn mouthpiece. I retired as a middle school band director in Louisiana after 33 years and I am still actively gigging on trumpet. I know I am late to the party but I have watched the whole video and dug it. I will be watching the vids from now on. I have also subscribed. Can't wait to see the new innovations.
All these Mouthpieces you've shown off so far are really cool and but man this takes the cake. Any idea of a modular mouthpiece is just downright peak innovation when it comes to the mouthpiece, which why I've been watching y'all since Highschool. I've always been extremely interested in the physics of sound (wanted to be a theoretical physics major for a second there) and you inspire me. Don't get me wrong, while I would adore winning a mouthpiece, I've been fascinated by your trumpets since I first saw them around 2015-2016, just never been able to afford one. Since leaving highschool, I've had a trumpet that barely worked and a old beat up Holton that kinda does the trick off of eBay. Don't get me wrong, it plays, but it's a lot more dented then the Strad I was playing in highschool! Makes me a bit self conscious to bring it out around others, but hey, I have to keep trying so I can sound good! I recently wanted to audition for my local Met Winds, so a Harrellson Trumpet would be a phenomenal thing to have, but a mouthpiece that I can use to finally find the exact right fit for me would be amazing. Either way, congratulations to the winners!! Also, yes I want a Harrellson shirt!! I would love a Science meets Sound shirt
Manny. I am so glad to hear that you're enjoying my videos. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate the feedback. Stay tuned... we'll have a lot of great videos coming up.
Yes, I'd like a t-shirt. The reproduction of your original. I love learning musical instrument history. Several years ago I got out my old horn (Getzen cornet) and started playing again after 30 years. At some point I want to get a trumpet. Glad to have found your video and will be looking at others as I have time.
This is probably the one of the coolest Trumpet gear videos I've ever seen! I'd love that gold Trumpet shirt! Watching this channel has really changed the way I play Trumpet! 🎺
Interesting factoid, my buddy's dad invented this, his name was Bud Pastor and lived in toms River New Jersey. It was named after my buddy Jerry and his mother Edwina. They also owned a music store there until the 90s when Bud passed away. Can't remember if they sold the company, or the mouthpiece.... I don't remember what happened but there you go good video thanks
Oh man! I would love to review Harrelson MPCs!! I've got students that could expand that play test, as well. (I'm the guy with the 5MM educator kit). My wife and daughters have stolen all my Harrelson tshirts, and the boys have taken all my Harrelson stickers and wood etching pieces. Would love to have that 25th reissue shirt (2XL)!
That would be great! Stay tuned and hopefully you'll win some more shirts. If you email Jen in the office she can ship you out some swag for your students as well.
Wow, that was a super cool mouthpiece. I love stuff when it has that much thought behind it's design. The original style t-shirt for rocking classic look.
I am seriously learning so much from these videos! I'm 45 and have been playing trumpet since 5th grade. And stopped playing beyond playing at home for fun. I came across your videos when I was looking to rebuild my embouchure, and I've been glad I did! Yes, I would love a T-shirt, though I doubt you have them in my size 7XLT! 25th anniversary, where science meets sound ♥️
Thank you for explaining a little known mouthpiece. I am really enjoying my Spectratone mouthpiece.. Have used in a larger band setting, solo playing as well as a smaller group. Used three different setups and was pleased with the results. Would love the original 25 anniversary shirt
I have a Jerwyn mpc. However it looks very different. The adjustment goes from really deep to SUPER deep. Remind me to send a quick vid or some pix if you would like to see it.
Thanks so much for sharing this. It reminds me of the adjustable shotgun choke made by TruGlo that went out of production years ago: similar concept. I wonder if the patent for this mouthpiece expired.
Yes, this patent has expired and there are many superior designs available today including the 5MM and SpectraTone series mouthpieces. www.whyharrelson.com
Yes I want a Harrelson T Shirt. I like the colored one. By the way Great stuff. I really like to understand the technology behind instruments as well as the musicality. I have a 13 year son who is a Trumpet player and I like giving more informed information rather than just my experience / feelings as to the whys and how. Thanks for making these videos and sharing your experience.
That mouthpiece is such a cool idea and the design looks amazing. Never heard of that one before. I'm going to have to start seeing if I can find one. Been a 5mm player for a few years now and I'm excited for the spectratone blue to come out. I would love to have a color harrelson T shirt (XL) or any of the hats you showed.
Jason - as the cup gets deeper the sides of the mouthpiece between the rim and the moving cup are obviously parallel. How would this affect the sound compared to a "normal"" mouthpiece of the same depth? I've got a trombone mouthpiece which is almost the same design except the cup and body sections are machined from aluminium. There is a spring inside the body under the cup which can be left to move with a little pressure or locked. I guess if you're playing a nice melody with the cup all the way down and wanted to go for something high you could apply a bit more pressure and the cup would get shallower to make that a bit easier?! Happy to send you photos or a video of if it you're interested. There's no markings on it at all. Steve
I've always loved the colorful trumpet t-shirt. Would love to have that one. I did watch the video til the end. I would need either a 2XXL or XL. Thank you!
Pretty cool MPC. Like the idea of it being adjustable but wonder if there would be any air leakage between the moving parts. I'd love the re-issue of the original T-shirt as my original one is wearing thin and the writing is disappearing.
I didn't realize that Jerwyn produced such mechanical mouthpieces, I'll definitely have to look more into the company, do you know how it compares to a product you make such as a spectratone or 5mm performance and quality wise?
I remember me always wanting the adjustable mouthpiece when I first started playing trumpet. Saw it in a magazine, I told my mother to buy me one and she looked at me and laughed because of the price. I knew it was a long shot but that mouthpiece stayed in my mind for many many years. I remember telling people about it and they thought I was lying. For a moment I thought it was the Mandela effect…. Until now. You have confirmed it exists!! I would also love to be a beta tester for any of your products as I have bought and used a 5MM mouthpiece for about 5 years and have used several other equipment from you guys! Finally, I would like a t-shirt! Funny, I have been a trumpet player for over 20 years and have never owned a t-shirt with a trumpet on it! Keep doing great things! Regardless if I win or not, I will still continue to support you and your vision for high quality trumpet equipment!
Would love one of the classic tshirt too, size s please. I'd love to be part of the beta testing of the blue spectra tone. Is that through kickstarter or through your website?
All beta-testers are chosen based on the quality of their video reviews on TH-cam. You only need to have one review published to qualify. Email us through our website.
I admire Harrelson's appreciation for science and innovation. I came to the channel after the kickstarter, so I'm just now learning about Spectratone series mouthpieces. I like your comment about spending money on mouthpieces. Seems like it was money well-spent for Harrelson Trumpets. I'm impressed with your videos. I'm a comeback player working on endurance. My goal is to be musical through my workable range. I do like the 25th color T-shirt or the re-issue cap. Thanks.
I loved that story from the winner! I’m gonna go check to see if he has any video of his performances, I love brass quintet performances. I’m planning on forming one with a few friends in a few months, though I’d probably be bass trombone or tuba and not trumpet. This was a wonderful video, and the mouthpiece seems incredibly interesting. Probably not for me, not looking for things that are too expensive. But I’ll find the one! Some day, it’ll come. Might take 50 years but that’s alright, lol! A mouthpiece with an adjustable cup size seems really cool. My mouthpiece is just a 7c that came with my cheap trumpet from Amazon, but I’ve tried different sizes from friends and a bach 5c that one had was my favorite. Knowing which mouthpieces to buy and where to start is hard, there’s so many options!
I remember these in the Woodwind and Brasswind catalog in the 90's. They also mentioned a Timofei Dokshitzer signature model, but I can't find who made it. Also had scratch n dent Stomvi's for under $1000, should have bought one instead of the 37 I had
Thanks for the great video as usual! I picked up the trumpet about 3 and a half months ago alongside my primary oboe and jazz bass, because my school jazz band needs one next year. Subsequently when I joined my villages community band, I was thrust into the spot of trumpet one out of necessity (where I usually have played tuba with them in past years). We’ve been learning Bugler’s Holiday and I’ve once again started learning the first trumpet part. My journey into the realm of trumpet the past few months has been delightful, and it’s opened my eyes to why so many can spend their whole lives dedicated to mastering as much of this beautiful instrument as they can. It’s because of videos like yours that I’ve been able to learn and enjoy it in the short time I’ve had as I’ve been thrown into the fire with my bands. I’m still only 17 and so glad to have found this instrument while I’m still young and have a lifetime of learning in front of me. Keep doing what your doing :)
Great review. That adjustable cup mouthpiece is cool! I hadn’t been too keen on adjustable mouthpieces mostly because I’d probably spend too much time tinkering at the expense of playing. However that piece is just downright cool and practical. And YES, I want a T-shirt or a hat, the colorful one. I’d wear it at rehearsal and around town here in Austin. I might run into Pete Rodriguez with that shirt on.
Thanks for your videos, Jason! I really love your videos and craftmanship. I have been playing saxophone now for many years but as I'd like to broaden my horizon, I started learning the trumpet. And although it is very different from a saxophone, I really enjoy making progress on my trumpet. Thanks for your tips on embouchure it really helped me in developing my trumpet embouchure. Keep making videos (and trumpets and mouthpieces)!
Yes I want a harrelson tshirt, I would love any of it! I cannot wait for tomorrows video! Fingers crossed! That trumpet would be so nice! I am an upcoming ninth grader who LOVES the trumpet, I made it in the top jazz and concert at the high school(Being the only freshman to do so) and this trumpet would be amazing to further my playing! Thank you so much for these videos and for the chance to win!
Cool apparell... I have been following you for some time now but I am a flugel player :( Perhaps at some point there will be something for me !~! Cool mouthpiece in this video though.
Very interesting to hear about different mouthpieces. Especially the innovative one😊 My own mouthpiece for years now is the Danish Elsberg A3MB. It would be fun to hear your opinions and thoughts about this kind of mouthpiece in the future. Only a wish... I would love to win a t-shirt! I like both, but especially the anniversary model.
I like the 25th T with the mechanical drawing. Next, this won't get me points here but the mouthpiece demonstration makes me think of the Bob Reeves line. He aligned two of my horns.
Learning a lot from these videos. My goal is to get there by the end of the year or by the beginning of next year. What money I have is tied up. I need a new horn. My poor Stratovarius survive my house burning down. But it looks awful it's got a couple dings. I've had it since 1978. Praying someone will put a new silver surface on it. It got ruined from black soot. Love the t-shirts especially the first one
Wow! What a different mouthpiece! I wonder if it compares to your 5MM. To me, there is no better mouthpiece than the 5MM, but I am biased. Regardless, that is a cool mouthpiece.
I played a gig many years ago with a trombone player who had an unusual mouthpiece. I’m a trumpet player but I asked him about it. It is somewhat similar to the Jerwyn that you are showing here. He said he designed and fabricated himself on a Sears and Roebuck lathe. I wish I could remember his name. Thanks for showing this.
That mouthpiece sounds very interesting! If you remember his name, please pass it along.
Wow I'd love to see/try that!
It’s nice too see a company that actually cares about their customers/audience
These videos are always fun, its great to see them when they come out
I like the Jerwyn mouthpiece idea. There is another similar idea called, "Sarad". I don't know if it is as good as the Jerwyn, but I am thinking of buying it. I would love a color trumpet t-shirt. Thanks for your video. Sincerely, John.

🙂
I have a Jerwyn mpc. However it looks very different. The adjustment goes from really deep to SUPER deep. Remind me to send a quick vid or some pix if you would like to see it.
I would love to see it. Does it have laser engraved marks or a stamped mark?
Love to try all those pieces

I love the original T-shirt, where science meets sound. Like you always say physics is nature. I tell my kids physics is just how stuff works.
Steve, thanks for watching! I appreciate the feedback. Stay tuned.
That mouthpiece is such a cool idea and the design looks amazing. Never heard of that one before. I'm going to have to start seeing if I can find one. @@harrelsontrumpets hi Jason, sorry for the misunderstandind. No harm, no foul : )
What a beautiful sounding mouthpiece with a cool design. Also, I would like a 25th Anniversary classic design shirt.
Pretty cool MPC. Like the idea of it being adjustable but wonder if there would be any air leakage between the moving parts. I'd love the re-issue of the original T-shirt as my original one is wearing thin and the writing is disappearing.
There is no air pressure loss as the threads were machined properly
I didn't realize that Jerwyn produced such mechanical mouthpieces, I'll definitely have to look more into the company, do you know how it compares to a product you make such as a spectratone or 5mm performance and quality wise?
I Would live a T-shirt! The 25th anniversary colored would be great :)

As a scientist and a trumpet player, I love the Science Meets Sound shirt. Would love to have one in a XXL!

I love the first shirt and would gladly wear it if I won it.
Carlos thanks for watching and thanks for your feedback. Please stay tuned for more videos here and more chances to win fun prizes.
Has the Blue kickstarter started? I can’t find it in Kickstarter or anywhere else as of 6/22/22.
tonight
Adjustable cup sizes, cool concept!
Yes, a really cool concept! Thanks for watching.
Love your sounding mouthpiece.
I played Taps in the NYARNG.
Joel B.
That mouthpiece is awesome.
Right? I think so too.
Jason! I want to stop by one of these days, because you're the guy!!! And I am the one who has tried everything and am still looking for what works!!

Do you know of a mouthpiece which has a similar rim to the denis wick 4x but has a deeper cup ?
These were advertised in the ITG Journal in the 80s.
Yeah, I need to dig out my old copies and find an original ad.
Would love a hat or tee shirt. .I am 72 years old and have picked up my trumpet from high school again. Thanks
I like the 25th T with the mechanical drawing. Next, this won't get me points here but the mouthpiece demonstration makes me think of the Bob Reeves line. He aligned two of my horns.
Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate you taking the time to check out my videos as well.
Yes I want to have a 25th color T shirt

You showed the 0-1-2-3-4-5 feature, but you didn't elaborate on what it does. Other than looking like some kind of micrometer, what is its purpose?
Learning a lot from these videos. My goal is to get there by the end of the year or by the beginning of next year. What money I have is tied up. I need a new horn. My poor Stratovarius survive my house burning down. But it looks awful it's got a couple dings. I've had it since 1978. Praying someone will put a new silver surface on it. It got ruined from black soot. Love the t-shirts especially the first one
Thanks Steve. I really appreciate the feedback and it's great that you're finding the videos informative. Stay tuned... lots of great stuff coming up.
I'd love the color 25th anniversary shirt in 2x!!! 🎺🎺🎺🎺

Wow! What a different mouthpiece! I wonder if it compares to your 5MM. To me, there is no better mouthpiece than the 5MM, but I am biased. Regardless, that is a cool mouthpiece.
