Whoa Nelley, 1974 and should have been long out the door. We got the VIN, we win: 4 for 1974 model year, G for Chicago, IL assembly, 21 for Grand Torino Elite two door hardtop, S for 400 V8 with two barrel and the rest is the production sequence. The Chicago, IL plant still operates today. The 400 V8 was a sloppy engine. It ran sloppy, was sloppy on fuel and the emission controls were horrendous. It was a real heap. These cars competed against the GM "A" and "G" body cars and were easily outsold by one GM division. No tag, can't brag, but easy to figure out, no doubt: 65M for Gran Torino Elite two door hardtop, 9A for White exterior paint, OW for White vinyl roof, possible FB for Blue cloth and vinyl split bench interior trim, possible X for FMX automatic transmission, possible 2 for 2.75:1 rear axle ratio, non-locking, and maybe 52 for Dallas, TX sales district. Whoa Nelley, the Elite was always a heap. 400 and gotta go. That's it, time to quit. Motorcraft needs a life raft. FMX is a big mess. Wearing four fake spokes and always a joke. Going to be flat and that's that. Going to get squished and the FOMOCO faithful, maybe Benny, I'm sure a few here, but sorry folks, never the Google Man is going to be pissed.
My father bought one of these car back in 1976. The only reason he bought an Elite Grand Torino instead of a regular was he thought is was the sexiest looking car on the road! I think his affection for that car cost him about $1,500.00 extra, but he said it was worth it! Had a 351 W in it and was dark green, with a tan roof.
I remember those cars I only fixed 500 of them back in the day. They're overbuilt like a Rock of Gibraltar Battleship trust me. If you took a GM or Chrysler product of the day's front end apart you'd have a handful or so of bolts. Take 1 of these bad boys apart you'd have a large coffee can full of bolts that weighed 20 pounds afterward...
🏁 hey Benny nice video on the Gran Torino that's a real nice car. That definitely can be saved and driven as everyday daily driver thanks again on the video 🇺🇲🏁🏁🏁😎🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
Not too bad of a price, especially if she runs and drives. My first car was a '74 Gran Torino Elite, black with 351 Cleveland. I have a soft spot for these car. I always enjoy your auto finds Benny.
Minus the passenger quarter panel, this one is a pretty clean example! I hope it got sold! I'd choose this one over the '76 Elite you featured a few weeks ago.
It has the instrument cluster. You can see it plainly at 1:33. It would have to since it has the Interior Decor Group, which included it. S Code is 400-2V, and G indicates Chicago build. Other visible options are AC, tinted glass, tilt wheel, cruise, AM-FM 8-Track , light package and Convenience Group (dual mirrors are the tell, also included interval wipers). Don't know why people got these with crank windows, just not becoming of this type of car.
I saw that, too. I'd rather have the power windows than the cruise control. I have a 1972 Gran Torino. 351, A/C, pretty basic, no light group or clock like my 72 Montego MX. I have an oddball 85 Thunderbird Elan. Every option except a power seat. Who does that?
That Elite has the top of the line split bench interior which was very luxurious for a mid-sized car. They came standard with a regular non-split bench seat. Optional were the bucket seats and also (as part of seasonal option packages) the flight bench seat with pull down center armrest. One of my paper route customers years ago had two Elites, one white and one light blue. He really liked them. Our across the street neighbor traded his early 1970's Thunderbird on a red Elite. Consumers, even wealthier ones, made decisions like that after the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo raised gasoline prices. Depending on the engine chosen, the Elite did not get that much better gas mileage than a Thunderbird. And, from an engineering standpoint, they were virtually the same car. Only in its introductory year of 1974 was the car called the "Gran Torino Elite".
From ten feet away I don’t look bad either. I don’t like the screwed up exhaust on it and I’m wondering how bad that rust on the roof is. Also why the dollar store paint job? If the motor and trans are good it’s worth what they are asking, but be prepared to put another 5k in her
Looks good, I always these were kind of a odd car it was like Ford didn't know what they wanted it was part Torino and the back end looked like a cougar of that year, me and friend of mine used to burn up the roads in banana 🍌 yellow 76 version 🤣
It's a cool car. Solid project. The price? Hmmm...it's got that large dent and the exhaust needs to be welded together, so a grand off the pricetag if it starts.
Hey Benny 😅 I bet you were wondering if someone whoever was the owner was seeing this car in their eyes as a makeshift limousine because of the "arrow" antenna?

Man I wonder if they put it out there with a forklift seeing the exhaust is ripped out from underneath it like that. The pipes and glasspacks look pretty new too... Unfortunately this yard is bad about lifting the cars up from the sides instead of the front, its understandable though seeing how they got the yard setup.....Almost bought a 4x4 suburban off them a few years ago before I looked under and seen the severely bent driveshaft from the forks.

@@ClassicRideSociety Yea it is easier to organize them from the side. Thats how we used to do it when I was in the business but we pulled the driveshafts before we picked em up though.
@@ClassicRideSociety My neighbor had one as a parts runner in the 1980s. It was a 1975 with a 351 V8 two barrel.
