    Just exactly what I have been looking for. Thank you. started to play cello in my 50s. I am now 80. I had to stop 4 years ago and now hoping to get back into playing. I was shocked to find I had forgotten most of what I had learned. This was the biggest hurdle for me. You explain it very well. Many thanks.I will have to follow you on instagram once I get used to that.

    5 years later and this video is still helping beginner cellists! I'm 24, been playing less than a year, and my teacher already has me about to tackle Tarantella Op.23 . This will help me get a headstart. Thank you Ms. Sarah Joy!

    My teacher just told me a couple weeks ago that I needed to start learning tenor clef, so my I can start playing more challenging music. Thank you SO much!

    I really like your string swap trick. I can remember the panic I used to feel when the music suddenly switches from bass to tenor clef and back again to bass. Thank you.

    Totally makes sense, and answers something (in part) what I had been wondering about for a while: how do different clefs relate to each other. Thanks :-)

    I just treated Bass, Tenor, Treble Clefs as 3 overlapping "translations" of a "single language." Granted that is a bad explanation but by the time I learned about the Tenor Clef the other 2 Clefs were already relatively easy to read. I was about 10 yrs. old at the time. That was over 60 years ago.

    that thing you mentioned about just moving over a string.. that wouldn't work for a tenor clef G (one ledger line above staff) would it? since a cello in bass clef doesn't have an E string.. that only works for the lower notes, i just about confused myself to death!!

    • @RolandHutchinson
      @RolandHutchinson 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can still use the trick if you think about playing C (middle C) in bass clef up in position on the D string, then move it over to the A string to play the tenor clef G.
      But for everyone at some point -- depending on the person and how their mind works, and how much music they have to play in tenor clef, and other factors -- it just becomes easier to abandon the "trick" and just get in the habit of reading directly in the tenor clef. You may have reached that point when you asked this question!

    • @E_MZ_
      @E_MZ_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roland Hutchinson yeah, my cello teacher told me about this trick. It wasn’t confusing, but I would rather just learn the clef and master it as written instead transposing in my mind.

    Just to let you know on the first written scale if you read the 11th note (F) in tenor clef across the string as a B it would be finger 3 so it has to be read as a B flat if your just thinking up a string.

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lightfinder Photography Indeed! And it's especially useful because you can just think about playing in Bass Clef, just one string over.

    Hi . Thanks for sharing...I am a bit confused on the the last bass clef because the first note B has a 1 , above it, yet on the last triplet that same B has a 4 above it. Why a 1 and then a 4 on the same transcribed note?

  • @justintyme2451
    @justintyme2451 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another easy way to look at this is --- draw 5 lines for your treble clef. Draw the line for middle C treble clef ( that would be a 6th line below the treble E(Every, Good, Boy, Deserves......). Draw 5 lines below that 6th line for the Bass clef. That Middle C treble clef is also middle C for the Bass clef( one line above the 5 note Bass staff) ---- AND both the Tenor clef and Alto clef fit within those 11(eleven) lines.
    SO... the middle C on TENOR clef is the mid point on that Backward E

    The tenor clef shall also be used in a male tenor voice (the highest voice that Andrea Bocelli has) and also the tenor sax just instead of using treble (G-clef) clef in sheet musics...

    Does this mean that a B (3rd finger on the G-string) would be an F-sharp in Tenor Clef or an F-Natural?

  • @bayareapianist
    @bayareapianist 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is another way that I think is easer. use trouble clef and move down one note and play an octave lower. I know how important the finger positions are in cello. I used this method when I started the swan.

  • @marianomendez9130
    @marianomendez9130 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The movable C on the fourth line. Ok, I need to sight sing the Tenor Clef. So, I make believe that I'm reading treble clef and just call the C on tenor a D on Treble and start C on the G string finger four of the Cello. No problem, I think I got it. How About the Alto clef? Does it play a role on the Cello?

    • @marianomendez9130
      @marianomendez9130 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will ignore the Clef sign and concentrate on transposing while I play, you are a great help.

    • @marianomendez9130
      @marianomendez9130 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Alto Clef (movable c on third line) is easier for me to read.

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, we don't use Alto clef (generally speaking). However, if you ever want to learn viola, you'll need to know it.

    easy solution to an otherwise mysterious topic!!

  • @Davids-dr5jz
    @Davids-dr5jz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok so I get it: the tenor clef use. But there is something that is 💯 faster to use when learning to sight read the basic notes on the first position. Which cover the bass and the tenor class. I just learned it a few days ago. Trust me there is a quick trick to this. The cello sight reading on the first position, which contains 18 basic notes, is much more easier to master than the notes the first position of a guitar. If you know the trick! Get in touch with me Sarah, it will make every starting student a whiz at sightreading.

    Hey I don't know if you will read or respond. My names Damion I turned 16 not to long ago. I just stared playing the cello and I'm really insecure. I've played double bass for roughly two years now.id like to know your thoughts on if it's possible. I really want to play but I am scared. This video is really educational and I finally get transposing.😅

    • @sarahjoyrecordings
      @sarahjoyrecordings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Damion Malloy no, it's not too late, and is certainly possible. Your experience with the double bass should help with intonation. If you're thinking about pursuing professionally, you will have bit of catching up to do, but personally, I don't think it's impossible.
