    This makes so much more sense. I just checked and indeed, the holes doesn't line-up with the mics. Thanks Scott!!

    I found a skeleton housing online that exposes all the mic holes. Glad that I dont have to drill holes. Nice advice. Keep it up.

    I would tend to believe that the reason the audio ports are covered is to prevent dust and dirt from entering the holes. Just bought my GoPro yesterday and I will be doing the cut outs on the case. Thanks for the video!

      Yeah I have a Vlog type set up I use with a Rode Video Micro. Works fantastic with an aluminum case that already has a hot shoe mount on it.

    ill be doing it this weekend with my karma grip. I'll let you know.

    • @ScottyGoesPro
      @ScottyGoesPro  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      519 Streets I've since bought a Karma grip and did a review on it too. I don't think it's necessary to drill the karma grip. The hole above the karma grip matches up with the mic. Also the opening on top where the shutter button is is big enough to where that mic is visible. The problem just happens when you take the door off.

    I ran some experiments with my Hero 5 Black paired with a GoPro Karma Grip. The audio was muffled and had a slight humming and pulsating sound similar to a pool filter running in the background. I would not use this audio in videos when sound quality is important. I have a G6 gymbal coming and will test and compare its performance to the Karma both with and without an external mic. I did not have an external mic option for the Karma tests. I also ran some tests with the Hero 5 in the following conditions, 1) bare camera with door off 2) bare camera with door on 3) camera in its housing with door on and 4) camera in its housing, door on and attached to my 3-piece GoPro stick. Having the door removed from the camera had the greatest impact on sound quality (bad!). It was slightly less muffled versus attached to the Karma but had an annoying wind-like noise. This is unusual since I ran the experiment in a quiet basement. My guess is removing the door on the camera somehow messes with the internal logic used by the camera to modulate between the 3 different microphones. I had no distinguishable difference in audio quality with or without the housing attached to the camera. So for now I will not be drilling openings in the housing. In fact there are channels in the backside of the housing close to the mics which I assume the GoPro engineers designed to support the audio.

    I know this is an older video but how does the noise cancellation settings work? Is it better to have it set to “windy” or normal?

  • @damacknificent151

    The case isn't the issue for me. Its the wind noise.

      some people use the GoPro to film actual extreme sport footage or stuff that creates a lot of wind noise...you know, the actual purpose for the GoPro....the original reason why it was invented and got popular.

    Hi Scotty, I use the GoPro 5 for filming my family as well, when I use it in the case with the 3 way grip I get a lot of handling noises, just moving the camera slightly with the grip make noises.. It ruins the film. Does those holes solve that problem as well? Thanks a lot! Alexander

    will u do this on the karma grip?

    • @ScottyGoesPro
      @ScottyGoesPro  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phillip Tran I actually just bought a grip yesterday and was planning on doing this. However, the holes on the grip harness line up like there suppose too. The opening on top where the record button is is large enough that it allows access to microphone just fine. The side microphone (opposite the battery door) lines up perfectly to the hole in the grip harness. So, no drilling necessary. .

    • @shlolvy
      @shlolvy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi
      So any idea how to improve the karma grip audio? In this case it seems that the only problem is the removed door.
      Thanks.

    • @ScottyGoesPro
      @ScottyGoesPro  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phillip Tran I am actually going to do a review on the grip sometime during the next week or two and talk about the audio. However, I do not think there is a way to improve the quality while attached to the grip. The grip brings more audio problems.

    • @ScottyGoesPro
      @ScottyGoesPro  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      emirjuka yeah it makes terrible sounds when you move your hand around on a grip, pole, or touch the camera. Every movement of your hand travels up the pole or handle into the GoPro. I've had to scratch many clips because of this.

      Hey guys, I tried wrapping my grip with a gel tape for baseball bats I found at a sporting goods store (I'll put a link to the brand below). It's made a huge difference, there's still noise but it really helped. Right now I have a gopole grenade but when I wear that out I'll get the handler again from gopro and put it on that too. Hope this helps. Great video, can't wait to try this on mine too. Thanks! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0731XLK8X/ref=s9_dcacsd_dcoop_bw_c_x_1_w

    • @ScottyGoesPro
      @ScottyGoesPro  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can still put it in the water. I do it all the time. The Hero 5 is water proof without any type of housing. As long as both the doors are closed tight. Drilling the holes in the case is strictly to allow the microphones to capture more sound.
