    In this vid, I show you what I think is the best audio solution for the GoPro Hero5. Most recommend a Rode mic, which is fine but WAY too big. This solution gives good audio but maintains a small form factor. Links to all the pieces below:

    Best video I've found for keeping the small compact size of a gopro with an audio upgrade. Most setups make a bulky rig which takes away the compactness.

    Thanks for the great audio fix! I just got my first GoPro (Hero 6 Black) and the audio is indeed terrible. After watching your video I ordered the GoPro obnoxiousxly big mic adapter and the wonderfully small Saramonic SR-XM1. What I love about this solution is that the Saramonic mic not only improves the audio greatly but it swivels so I can point it either ahead at a subject or if I am narrating back at myself behind the camera. I just got the mic in today and did a test. I am very, very please. I am used to professional and semi professional video equipment and am a big fan of Rode mics and Sennheiser but for casual purposes the Saramonic sounds great and is a bargain at under $30.

    What are you using in terms of protune settings for the Audio? I've found at times the audio is completely OUT after doing this set up - purchased everything and connected everything as per your instructions. But now occasional clips have ZERO audio at all.

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Set the audio to Standard. Also DONT use one touch record. Depending on firmware it won’t work.

    Good stuff. I actually have been testing the audio on the hero 5 BLK and when the mics aren’t in a case it with a case with the mics not blocked it actually sounds a billion times better and usable. I like this solution with a smaller mic and keeping a smaller footprint versus using a mic that will double everything in size.

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Chris Sosa I might have a lemon, but outside the case (sample shown in the video) it is pretty unusable to my ear. I also have super old firmware so that may be a factor.

    Currently using the Fieyutech G6 Gimbal a Hero 6, GoPro mic adapter and the edutige external mic.
    In some recordings it’s great. Others there are clicking sounds, others there is a humming sound. Wondering if you ever ran into those problems. You think it’s the gimbal? The adapter is bad? The mic is bad?

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No probs with vibrations. Yes it stays in place. It does an admirable job in normal winds. For mountain biking it does OK depending on how close the mic is to your mouth. For best results you could run a lavalier from the adaptor to under a jersey.

    • @BoredProgression
      @BoredProgression 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not a bad idea. Thanks a lot for the advice! I'm hoping this would be a decent setup for snowboarding which is similar conditions to mountain biking.

  • @BikepackingAdventures
    @BikepackingAdventures 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello great video, personally my Hero 5 Black doesn't suffer as much as demonstrated here, but the situation I am lookjng to overcome is as so. Imagingme your cycling with friends, your voice pickup is fine, but the mic doesn't pick up friend's voices around you very well. Does your solution help in this situation? I've seen over vloggers recording such interactions perfectly well it would be great to be able to do the same.

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Edutige 001 has an Omni pattern so it does pick up well. Better than the stock mic. That said you always want to be within arms reach of whatever audio you want to pick up. You can watch any bike vid we do and I am super conscious of being close to the sound source.

    Awesome vid. Did you ever get a chance to put this saramonic Mic against the rodemicro? If so what did you thing about the comparison of sounds?

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Rodemicro is a pretty clear winner in the audio department. But the Saramonis isn’t that bad in a vlog style vid with a bed of music. Diff become more noticeable in really quiet environments. The Rode has more bass and presence but it is also really big and dumb looking on a GoPro.

    • @mallkrawlerz620
      @mallkrawlerz620 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Path Less Pedaled that’s kind of what I had figured. I wanted to put a small microphone on my GoPro mounted on a gimbal and I tried the video micro but it was still too heavy for the gimbal. I was almost resorting to a lav and a cable. I hope this works best. I’m willing to give up semi quality audio for something that’s not as great just to have a portable set up because this microphone situation sucks thanks for your fast response

      Path Less Pedaled super bummed. I ordered the Mic, i received it, plugged it in and it had a funny clicking noise upon playback. Almost like the convection dimensions are off. the voice sound is better than the gopros by a long shot. totally worth the price so I’m really hoping this works out. I’ve ordered a second one and crossing my fingers

    Appreciate this video. Question: Does this mod affect the voice command feature? I'm using my H5 on my backpack strap for hiking videos and the voice command feature is great for my application..

      Works with voice commands. That’s how I usually film.

      One last question, I think :-) Since I'll be using the setup hiking, I'm wondering; Using the aluminum housing, is there enough room to leave the USB door on and lifted up when the mic adapter cable is plugged in? I ask because if I get caught out in the rain, I'd like to be able to quickly seal the camera and make do with the built in mic until the storm passes... Thanks for all your help and since you caught me before I placed my order, I've added the ETM-001 to my wish list...

    Thanks, I have a GoPro hero 6. So I’m hoping not to have to buy another video camera. Let’s hope your workaround also works with the microphone on the GoPro 6. Thanks for posting this.

    The aluminum case is fine on the hero 6 as well, right?

    have you had any issues with the sound being delayed in your video playback? seems on go pro studio all is good but all other editors have issues for me, obviously not a fan of go pro studio :(

    I saw in another video you got rid of the zip ties and used that epoxy glue stuff instead of zip ties. Would you recommend the epoxy instead? I want zero rattling with my sound!

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn't rattle with zip ties. I didn't use epoxy, I used Sugru which is a little different. More of a putty and won't get brittle in cold temps. th-cam.com/video/HSpwEW9rJ1U/w-d-xo.html

    thank you for answer me! By the way... if i buy a better microphone, can i eliminate the total noise? Or only if i buy other gimbal... like Evo?
    Do you think it's better change the go pro5 by the 4 silver? thanks!!!!

      I think a less noisy gimbal would be the way to go.
