- Just a quick "How To" video showing new users of the Hero 5 Black or Hero 5 session the process of connecting an external microphone. This tutorial shows you the steps and equipment needed as well goes over a few different mounting options to mount a microphone to the Hero 5 Black.

I was always under the impression that the Session did not support external mics. But you clearly show it working. Awesome!
I agree on the Rode recommendation. I use the Rode VideoMic and the Rode SmartLav+ and rate both very highly in their respective price range.

Air Photography its all about the money if they know you need it they could take away and make it another product like the mic adapter and make you buy the piece

Really sucks that the mic can't be used when the GoPro is mounted in the Karma Grip. Their engineering department is pretty lame.
GoPro is kind of lazy in their release. They lack vision in how far they can exceed. Their Gimbal sucks, their camera is still lacking in functionality. Their drones sucks as well. The only thing they have going is that their camera is small and waterproof.

Put camera in metal case, then get battery grip pole, mount case to grip pole, mount mic to metal case, use USB c adapter to power camera and link mic.....
I cant remember the video that we were talking on nor was I able to find it. But at your behest, I got the GoPro mic adapter for my hero 6 and the Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone with Rycote Lyre Shock Mount, and there is absolutely a very good improvement in audio quality. I have not yet tested it in the shop with the fans running, but I aim to do that tomorrow. I will let you know how it turns out. Thank you.

OMGosh! This is very helpful indeed! I've been despairing with the audio on my Hereo 5 inbuilt mic. Just bought a Fimi palm and am experiencing the same horror.
I would like to know does this GoPro adapter for external microphone works on other devices like other brand of action cams or even smartphones? I assume it has a built -in audio DAC chip of some sort, as you mentioned only this GoPRO accessory for audio input will work & no third party alternatives. As to the external microphones RODE meets the specifications, I also noticed another port besides 3.5mm jack is present, is it also a USB Type C port for possibly a microphone with USB Type C connector?
Hey man, wonder if you have any suggestions for me. I do a lot of outdoor adventure videos with my GoPro and a lot of it involves water activities. Any way I can cut out wind noise and improve my audio quality whilst keeping my camera safe if it does end up in the water? Thanks in advance
Why don't the go pro cameras have a normal mic socket the same as most other cameras do? Just an extra layer of complexity, it puts me off going down the go pro road.

Hello, I started watching you video and have enjoyed your presentation very much. I'm getting a Hero 5 black and would like to know, if you happen to have tested; can we charge hero 5 through the mic adapter: 3.5m is for mic and C is for charging the camera? I called GoPro and they said not possible. Thanks

The missing audio jack was a very poor design and marketing decision. Sort of like the airlines selling you a ticket and charging for seat belts!
Now I feel like an idiot for not fully checking that out. My GoPro 3 has an audio jack but not the five. Not all technological progress is actual progress

i have the hero5 and the ride video micro but wjen i record a video, the audio is light out of sync. the audio or words i say are maybe recorded in a second difference then the movement if my lips..(out of sync)

As there been any updates to the Hero 5 that allows you to use any USB-C to 3.5mm instead of the GoPro microphone adapter?
So if you could adapt that 3.5mm jack to a lightning dongle on the opposite end of the proprietary go pro bs, and then hook a wireless transmitter to that lightning end that you adapted, do you think it would work with a wireless lapel mic?

On this particular mic in the video, since it is not a stereo mic, did you notice a difference in sound quality using the mic compared to the Hero 5 black stereo sound quality ?
Are there any wireless options, or options that keep the GoPro waterproof? I'd like to mount my GoPro in my boat and get good audio while still having it protected from water spray or rain.
HuskyKMA to my knowledge there isn’t yet but my brother just bought a cheap audio recorder that works pretty well. I think it was around $20 so no big deal if it gets destroyed. Then you just line the audio up with the video.
Do you recommend this Mic for record the exhaust sound for a Car track video?

Mine picks up strong sound and if i dont put it on wind only it sounds terrible. If i out it on wind only it sounds great but it picks up a zooming sound. How do i fix this my friend?

Hi I have found a very cheap way to attach a microphone to my GoPro. In the UK the GoPro mic adaptor is not available. But I bought a cable with a USB C connector at one end and a 3.5 socket at the other end, from amazon, plugged my powered lavallier mic in and hey presto it worked fine. Now all I need is a remote compatible with my Hero 2018 and I will be happy. Any suggestions on that as all the remotes I have seen do not seem compatible .

Hi: Does the semi-circular mounting piece for the mic come with the mic or is that a separate piece? If its separate, what's it called and where do you get it? Also the alternative mount, the long one with cold shoes on each end, what's that called and where do you get it? Thanks, Dave
It comes with the microphone. You can mounted via a cold shoe or Tripod thread
I've had my Hero 5 and Rode micro since 2017. This week the audio is horrible, scratchy and fuzzy. Looking under the audio input tab. Mine says N/A and the text is grey. I assume that means my mine isn't working. I shoot video and car shows with loud exhaust. Do you think I blew the mic out? Cars were 3 ft from camera.
Awesome video!! But I need some help. I have a hero5 black. Gopro microphone adapter (2 of them now) and the same rode microphone in your video. The microphone working is hit or miss. I plug it all in, then turn on camera from the side. Then record. It worked at first. Then it didn’t no matter what. So I bought a new microphone adapter. Then it worked for a little. Now I just did some recording and it has NO sound. I started going into the preferences EVERY time I turned the camera on to make sure it said “standard mic”. It did. Then to be safe, I recorded what I wanted AGAIN with standard mic plus. That way I had 2 chances if it didn’t work. WELL I HAVE NO AUDIO. Any help is appreciated! Any audio tips for filming a band that are playing outdoors?
Does your camera register the adapter is plugged in without the mic and give you audio settings? I just spent like a hundred dollars through Amazon and it worked for a day. Now it's not recognizing it at all. No audio settings. I'm trying to figure out if the adapter stopped working or if it's the mic or both. Or even the USBC port. Any help is much appreciated. Really upset over this.

Hi. I just bought the same setup as you show to my Hero 5 but when i connect it to the camera the Audio Input is grey and says N/A . Have you any idea how i can fix this? ofcourse the new adapter could be broken. I have tested the Røde on another camera and it works perfect.

My Camera has white noise. I am doing recordings indoors. There is no noise at all. But it constantly has this "White" Noise. Anything I can do to get rid of that by making an adjustment in the camera without having to buy all of these parts? Thanks!
Mmmm .what if you plugged in a usb c adaptor with a standard midi usb Mic. Can you get around that ridiculous box ? Also are the new gopro cameras ie the 6 and 7 needing that box ?

isn't it foam under the fur? Many motovloggers actually shave the fur little so it doesn't get in their mouth
Give it a "haircut" on the side closest to the lens. Just a trim will do! 👍🏽

That adapter is awful and unfortunate and discouraging. My GoPro 3 Jack straight in. I was excited about the GoPro 5 but now it looks like I have to add a big adapter and I'm not sure how to do that with my rig. Thanks for the video!
QuikCapture and Promic non-powered mics will not allow your Microphones to work, keep that in mind? The work around is to use the On * Off mode, or use a Powered mic and quikCapture .

Don't know, but if you go searching for one, they are called lavalier microphone, or just LAV-mics.
The best reasonably priced LAV-mic (according to other people's opinions, I DON'T OWN ONE) is the Rode SmartLav+. It's wired, but that's the only one I know about.

Yes it is. There’s an additional USBC port so you can plug it in and charge it up at the same time

I purchased these exact products, GoPro Hero 5 Black, Mic adapter, Rode Video Micro, plugged them in just like you stated and all i get is a buzzing noise in my videos, no audio. When i plug in the same mic to another device the mic works just fine.
You need to select the powered mic setting, the video micro is a powered condenser mic

I'm trying to figure out if it is possible to have a external mic and a battery pack or a extended battery connected to the GoPro microphone adapter for the GoPro Hero 5 all at once. Does this work for Hero 4 Silver or is it only on the newer gopros?
The microphone will work, however there is a specific adapter you need for the hero 4

No. The attached microphone overrides any built in microphones
