@@darkmatter6714 The loud snapping sound of the chair is meant to scare or startle the listener after such a quiet opening scene. Thus, being scared of the chair, aka Chair-o-phobia. Or alternatively, "Cherophobia" . . . scared of being happy. As with most Ren songs, he gives us a double meaning.
I'm a lupus patient, and I've lived with it for over 20 years (i was diagnosed in junior high). There are times when I've had a really bad pain and fatigue day where I i truly DO hope I'm someone else in the morning... someone functional. Someone better. I love this song so much.
It is impossible to over analyze Ren and the lyrics. What you personally lay in his lyrics are true to you, and his empathy towards everyone is his biggest strength.

I find myself sitting here, singing along with Ren for the 100th time to this song, tearing up yet again. This was the second Ren song I was introduced to (after Hi Ren), and hits hard every time. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
It's not just music, it's so much more. Every word, every phrase, every setting is deliberate & it's all meaningful. I honestly believe Ren is simply astounding. Chinchilla is his perfect musical sibling & their songs together are sublime. We are blessed 🙏
I'm watching from the place of pain Ren was in ten years ago. Autoimmune disease + MCAS is a diabolical mixture. They fight each other, and you. The meds for one irritate the other, so nothing works like it's meant to. I've been in this deep pain place for 6 years, total illness 20 years. All of Ren's music to me is about pain, just like what you said about what in his lyrics is true to you. You're so right. And Seven Sins is my theme song! Lol. His line about his nails digging into the laminate... but that's a different song and discussion. Anyone who has had depression, or a number of other mental illnesses feels this one so deeply. "Walk around in a floating Chalk outline." Any and all meds can do this. I take over 40 pills a day, so I often wonder who I'd be without them. I'm certainly not the me I was 20 years ago. Speaking of which, please do "How to be Me"? It's probably my second favorite after Seven Sins. It's about Ren losing himself through the different pains he has dealt with, his illness, losing multiple friends, losing that record label deal. (They do not perform this on the bridge Joe jumped from, I don't know why that rumor started, but it's just that, a rumor) they are on a rooftop in, I believe, the UK somewhere. I should have waited until I saw the whole reaction before commenting! Lol. My chronic pain friends call the burying of ourselves with a great big smile - "masking". We do that to walk amongst the living. If we showed our pain on our faces, we wouldn't feel welcome in that world. And Chinchilla wears the long nails as armour, because she gets stage fright. The nails (and hats and costumes you'll see in her other stuff) to become Chinchilla, a character that doesn't have stage fright. She's also in "How to be Me". If you want to delve into Chinchilla, (you should!!!) You should do "Fingers live for hunger TV" first. Trust me. Your reactions are so on point. I feel you are absolutely correct that these are two people crying out to each other. I think Chinchilla is the only true match to Ren's passion in feeling the music. You are a real gem how deep you go when analyzing Ren’s songs/videos. This is the first song that I REALLY connected with personally as I was recovering from a major back surgery and was having huge anxiety and depression and have been on mind meds for many years. Totally hit me hard. Still likely my favorite song. Chinchilla’s harmonies are haunting and the connection, especially when looking into each others eyes, unbelievably powerful!
Ren calls Chinchilla his musical sibling, they are very in tune with each other. Yes. Jeff Buckley is one of Ren's many musical inspirations. Also I agree that nothing about this video creation is happenstance. The lyricism is smell of the most impactfull of Ren's to date. Coupled with the gorgeous harmonies and emotional delivery, how can anyone not be blown away. Chinchilla is a creative BEAST. She is going to be a powerhouse once she becomes more well known.
They sing beautifully together. Chinchilla is a trained singer, and is dynamite on her own, as well. Ren is untrained, but clearly has a lovely voice. He works very hard at keeping it in shape. They have another live, ‘How to Be Me’, and they have two busking videos that have been released, ‘Drunk in Love’ and ‘Sexual Healing’, both a joy to watch!
This one is like a Russian Doll, everything fits inside (place and space, lyrics, the singing, choreography, videography, ), all telling a singular story. The single chair sets the scene of place and space, the echoing sound demonstrating the empty space Ren experiences and the feeling writes the song for him. Chinchilla emerges from the walls and the floor and echos Ren, all her movements dictated and responding to Ren's intensity, she is his echo and of course fades out on her own as an echo would and he is left alone in the dark. Someone on the staff of a psych ward has been using the cellars, where the archives are kept, to practice guitar, and left the door open for Ren to wander in. The dark decending spiral that is depression makes the medication that numbs your brain very welcoming and can give a touch of respite, but leaves you trapped in a non existence.
True musical siblings - Chinchilla and Ren approach their art, writing, and performance very similarly. You will adore Chinchilla as much as we do. (Btw, have heard her belt a B5!) This & How To Be Me are incredible performances. They recently met up when Ren was back in England so there's hope for another song or 2 from them. Ren's new album will be called Slaughtehouse & Kurt Vonnegut is one of his favourite authors. I just read Slaughterhouse 5 & 'So it goes' is repeated whenever death is mentioned. There are aliens who can see all of time at once , so they have a level of acceptance that we can't comprehend.

Good evening Aaron! I'm glad to see you moving into Chinchilla's territory! Welcome to the ChiliBeans! I must say that your reaction might be the most detailed analysis I've seen in anyone reacting to Chalk Outlines. I can't even think of someone actually commenting on Chinchilla's actual body language and gestures as a part of the performance and what that might mean. Most people don't even mention that they match in attire other than a casual, passing, notice. As always, some background information for you to whet your appetite for knowledge! Chinchilla is a UK native with an extensive music background, but is younger than Ren. She has a very dynamic, intense, and gorgeous sound with a vocal range almost unmatched by even seasoned veteran vocalists. She is relatively new on the music scene as a professional, only going back a few years, but her work is impeccable, impressive, and extremely versatile. In many ways, Chinchilla is literally a female Ren. She also is a fully independent artist, leaving her corporate record label a year or so back after some serious issues with her management and, as usual, them attempting to push her into a traditional pop style., stifling her creative freedoms. Her latest works are all within the last year and they are utterly amazing. Chinchilla makes all her own outfits for her own music videos and typically also uses a mixture of traditional music video production, live performances, and one takes like Ren. I highly recommend you check out Fingers (live), 1:5 (live), Little Girl Gone, Caps Lock just to start with. This particular production is in the basement of an old hospital. This is another pre-COVID-19 production and was recorded live, in one take, with Sam and Josh. I do not remember how many takes this one took, but I am sure our fellow RENegades can let us know. Chalk Outlines is most definitely about addiction, loss, confusion, the obsession of pharmaceuticals in Westernised media and lifestyles, but it is also about how the very definition of addiction as a disease is a blessing and a curse. This is a very beautiful harmonic duet that involves how the soul moves through, around, and with pharmaceutical addiction, but also about the loss of life, of living, of experiencing because of addiction, disease, and psychosis. I've always felt that Chalk Outlines is basically Sick Boi Part 1.5, like an intersection between Sick Boi and Sick Boi Part 2 (which I HIGHLY recommend now that you've watched Sick Boi). The Chalk Outline represents death and the absence of the living within life. It also represents the hollow feeling (as you deduced) that comes with being numb on a cocktail of pharmaceuticals. From a personal perspective, my wife has moderate-severe anxiety and is greatly affected by reality without her medication. She takes a huge cocktail of drugs right now just to maintain her sanity. She can barely function without medications. Therapy was never enough. She NEEDS medication to help maintain the chemical balances in her brain or it truly is life-crushing. She once went four hours unable to stop yelling and sobbing while I held her, keeping her from completely collapsing in self-made terror and nightmare scenarios that ceaselessly played in her mind. This happened RIGHT at the beginning of our relationship and it was because of this event, we got her real help, medically and therapeutically. She is in a MUCH more stable situation now, can function normally, and enjoys her life with very little anxiety or fear. We hope our son doesn't get Mommy's anxiety, but he might and its something we're wholly aware of. We're pretty certain he already has the night terrors my wife had as a child, even at the young age of almost 3. We'll see where it goes. You can tell, I am quite aware of the effects that this sort of situation creates in people, though my wife is not the only personal example I can give. Chalk Outlines made me sob for an hour when I first heard it, unable to let go of my experiences to the whole of the video and the music. It was profound and I share this song with every addict and person I know who has experienced this hollow feeling because of whatever ails them. I hope this gives some insight and I cannot wait to see you go down the NEXT Rabbit Hole of Chinchilla! Much peace and love to you. ^^

Ren called chinchilla his musical sister. She is a beast of a signer, can do everything, dynamic signer. Look out her lives, "Finger" live is just a masterpiece : voice and piano, and that's it and it's the most 'filled up'' complete and captivating performance I've seen in my life. She's got the vocal coaches reactors going nuts! It's a short rabbit hole, since she is independent and do everything herself, including production, costumes and hats, really cool hats!

I listened to Hi Ren and the Trilogy of Tales dozens of times. They are long and powerful. This little songs, somehow tops them. Maybe for the chemistry between the two adds to it. Hauntingly beautiful.
The soulful gaze was a game time decision by Chinny per her interview with Kevin Liebe. In rehearsals, they were simply singing together. Chinny and Ren are musical siblings/twins, both excellent musicians, artist, dramaticists. Simply amazing together. Wait until you get to How to be Me (live version). Chinny's songs are maybe a bit NSFW for your channel however I think you could get away with Fingers and Little Girl Gone with only a couple of silent bleeps. Her voice is so beautiful and powerful. Like Ren, her live versions are very different from the official versions and are worth the reaction in addition to the officials.

This song resonates so much with me. I also wish I was someone else in the morning. Being put on antidepressants after my Mom committed suicide and my Dad dying before that plus living with severe chronic pain, some made me feel like a chalk outline. I’m on the right ones now. I have a severe, painful, disabling autoimmune disease, and unlike Ren, and stuck in the U.S. medical complex for “care”, I will not recover. A floating chalk outline is easy to imagine around my body. The pain is such that I can’t sleep or relax or be still. My skin is on fire, my eyes, the inside of my mouth. I pass out when upright for more than a few minutes. My joints burn and I can’t use my hands much or well. So much is behind me and nothing ahead. Soon, perhaps all that will remain of my existence here will be a chalk outline. I smile at the thought. No more pain.
I've suffered with depression for over 30 years (half my life) a lot of doctors seem so dismissive about it these days. It's so easy to write you a prescription and push you out of the door.
Last year (2023) from September to February of this year (2024) I was having a cascade of seizures that really should have killed me and very, very nearly did. I listened to this song a lot during that. I woke up every morning wishing I could be just about anyone else on the planet. I survived, but I had to fight the doctors in my area every step of the way for help. I spent probably two months playing jumprope on death's door. I don't think I will ever adequately have the words to describe the pain. Even now, months later and healing, I don't trust my own definitions of pain. My blood pressure always reflects that it's higher than I think it is... This song continues to hit me harder and harder. "In the gallows, I'm standing on my toes so I can breathe..." but "I'm scared of being okay cause all things change, all things change..." It's a found space Aaron, it wasn't set dressed, yes Ren often has intent and meaning in his videos, but sometimes 'a cigar is just a cigar,' no need to torture every single thing for meaning. The space had great acoustics. Now the lyrics do hit hard, and some let them go by without getting them, only noting the music, vocals, and harmonies. You might get more insight by watching Ren's 'Ren - Diazepam (Official Visualizer)' video. The medication causes flattening of emotion, depersonalization, derealization. As also stated in his 'Sick Boi.' That is the 'erasing ourselves' by medication, the hollowness you feel may be relief from your symptoms, but it is trading agony for life as a zombie. A 'perfect day is a beautiful shame as all things change,' so take the medication just in case, you miss the joy of the day, but you can't take the risk. 'In the gallows I'm balanced on my toes so I can breath'... always on edge, always vigilant, always taking effort just to be. Yes, it doesn't get more poetic to describe that situation than that. This song is an earworm that will be repeating in your head for days, and then weeks from now will just pop into your head. - - - - - Now for the TL:DR section on Chinchilla if you have the time to read: Chinchilla is a beast, while young Daisy Matilda Bertenshaw was the shy girl hiding behind her mother's skirts when introduced to people, her Chinchilla persona, with the long nails, hats and costumes she makes herself as well as produces most of her videos is all about Girl Power taking control. The noise in the hallway sounded like voices to me. I thought of a pist he did of being on a bus at 15 with just the driver, and hallucinating the sounds of a hundred voices murmuring. He did hear voices all the time until he banished them when he was nine. The financial records might have already been at that location or they could hark back to the business of drugs in the medical industry.

You should check out the Alternative to Jenny and Screech it has a positive outcome.. I think you would like it.. I wouldn't necessarily react to it because the song is AI generated.. but its basically as What IF? What if instead of freezing and going quiet like her mother.. instead Jenny finds courage.. when the blade is brought out Jenny steps forward and speaks.. and it ends the cycle for both of them.. its pretty clever.. @ awww man. I hate to be the one to tell you. Ren lost a very close childhood friend to self deletion. Ren tried to get to him to stop it but it was too late. He has songs about him and obviously losing his friend, Joe, has changed him forever. I’m sorry.

I'm watching from the place of pain Ren was in ten years ago. Autoimmune disease + MCAS is a diabolical mixture. They fight each other, and you. The meds for one irritate the other, so nothing works like it's meant to. I've been in this deep pain place for 6 years, total illness 20 years. All of Ren's music to me is about pain, just like what you said about what in his lyrics is true to you. You're so right. And Seven Sins is my theme song! Lol. His line about his nails digging into the laminate... but that's a different song and discussion. Anyone who has had depression, or a number of other mental illnesses feels this one so deeply. "Walk around in a floating Chalk outline." Any and all meds can do this. I take over 40 pills a day, so I often wonder who I'd be without them. I'm certainly not the me I was 20 years ago. Speaking of which, please do "How to be Me"? It's probably my second favorite after Seven Sins. It's about Ren losing himself through the different pains he has dealt with, his illness, losing multiple friends, losing that record label deal. (They do not perform this on the bridge Joe jumped from, I don't know why that rumor started, but it's just that, a rumor) they are on a rooftop in, I believe, the UK somewhere. My chronic pain friends call the burying of ourselves with a great big smile - "masking". We do that to walk amongst the living. If we showed our pain on our faces, we wouldn't feel welcome in that world.
And Chinchilla wears the long nails as armour, because she gets stage fright. The nails (and hats and costumes you'll see in her other stuff) to become Chinchilla, a character that doesn't have stage fright. She's also in "How to be Me". If you want to delve into Chinchilla, (you should!!!) You should do "Fingers live for hunger TV" first. Trust me.

This is the first song that I REALLY connected with personally as I was recovering from a major back surgery and was having huge anxiety and depression and have been on mind meds for many years. Totally hit me hard. Still likely my favorite song. Chinchilla’s harmonies are haunting and the connection, especially when looking into each others eyes, unbelievably powerful!

They sing beautifully together. Chinchilla is a trained singer, and is dynamite on her own, as well. Ren is untrained, but clearly has a lovely voice. He works very hard at keeping it in shape. They have another live, ‘How to Be Me’, and they have two busking videos that have been released, ‘Drunk in Love’ and ‘Sexual Healing’, both a joy to watch!

This one is like a Russian Doll, everything fits inside (place and space, lyrics, the singing, choreography, videography, ), all telling a singular story. The single chair sets the scene of place and space, the echoing sound demonstrating the empty space Ren experiences and the feeling writes the song for him. Chinchilla emerges from the walls and the floor and echos Ren, all her movements dictated and responding to Ren's intensity, she is his echo and of course fades out on her own as an echo would and he is left alone in the dark. Someone on the staff of a psych ward has been using the cellars, where the archives are kept, to practice guitar, and left the door open for Ren to wander in.
The dark decending spiral that is depression makes the medication that numbs your brain very welcoming and can give a touch of respite, but leaves you trapped in a non existence.
I’ve seen this a hundred times and it still makes me cry every time. They are astounding

I'm glad to see you moving into Chinchilla's territory! Welcome to the ChiliBeans! I must say that your reaction might be the most detailed analysis I've seen in anyone reacting to Chalk Outlines. I can't even think of someone actually commenting on Chinchilla's actual body language and gestures as a part of the performance and what that might mean. Most people don't even mention that they match in attire other than a casual, passing, notice.
As always, some background information for you to whet your appetite for knowledge!
Chinchilla is a UK native with an extensive music background, but is younger than Ren. She has a very dynamic, intense, and gorgeous sound with a vocal range almost unmatched by even seasoned veteran vocalists. She is relatively new on the music scene as a professional, only going back a few years, but her work is impeccable, impressive, and extremely versatile. In many ways, Chinchilla is literally a female Ren. She also is a fully independent artist, leaving her corporate record label a year or so back after some serious issues with her management and, as usual, them attempting to push her into a traditional pop style., stifling her creative freedoms.
Her latest works are all within the last year and they are utterly amazing. Chinchilla makes all her own outfits for her own music videos and typically also uses a mixture of traditional music video production, live performances, and one takes like Ren. I highly recommend you check out Fingers (live), 1:5 (live), Little Girl Gone, Caps Lock just to start with.
This particular production is in the basement of an old hospital.
This is another pre-COVID-19 production and was recorded live, in one take, with Sam and Josh. I do not remember how many takes this one took, but I am sure our fellow RENegades can let us know.
Chalk Outlines is most definitely about addiction, loss, confusion, the obsession of pharmaceuticals in Westernised media and lifestyles, but it is also about how the very definition of addiction as a disease is a blessing and a curse. This is a very beautiful harmonic duet that involves how the soul moves through, around, and with pharmaceutical addiction, but also about the loss of life, of living, of experiencing because of addiction, disease, and psychosis. I've always felt that Chalk Outlines is basically Sick Boi Part 1.5, like an intersection between Sick Boi and Sick Boi Part 2 (which I HIGHLY recommend now that you've watched Sick Boi).
The Chalk Outline represents death and the absence of the living within life. It also represents the hollow feeling (as you deduced) that comes with being numb on a cocktail of pharmaceuticals.
From a personal perspective, my wife has moderate-severe anxiety and is greatly affected by reality without her medication. She takes a huge cocktail of drugs right now just to maintain her sanity. She can barely function without medications. Therapy was never enough. She NEEDS medication to help maintain the chemical balances in her brain or it truly is life-crushing. She once went four hours unable to stop yelling and sobbing while I held her, keeping her from completely collapsing in self-made terror and nightmare scenarios that ceaselessly played in her mind. This happened RIGHT at the beginning of our relationship and it was because of this event, we got her real help, medically and therapeutically. She is in a MUCH more stable situation now, can function normally, and enjoys her life with very little anxiety or fear.
We hope our son doesn't get Mommy's anxiety, but he might and its something we're wholly aware of. We're pretty certain he already has the night terrors my wife had as a child, even at the young age of almost 3. We'll see where it goes.
You can tell, I am quite aware of the effects that this sort of situation creates in people, though my wife is not the only personal example I can give. Chalk Outlines made me sob for an hour when I first heard it, unable to let go of my experiences to the whole of the video and the music. It was profound and I share this song with every addict and person I know who has experienced this hollow feeling because of whatever ails them.
I hope this gives some insight and I cannot wait to see you go down the NEXT Rabbit Hole of Chinchilla!

Ren called chinchilla his musical sister. She is a beast of a signer, can do everything, dynamic signer. Look out her lives, "Finger" live is just a masterpiece : voice and piano, and that's it and it's the most 'filled up'' complete and captivating performance I've seen in my life. She's got the vocal coaches reactors going nuts! It's a short rabbit hole, since she is independent and do everything herself, including production, costumes and hats, really cool hats!

The soulful gaze was a game time decision by Chinny per her interview with Kevin Liebe. In rehearsals, they were simply singing together. Chinny and Ren are musical siblings/twins, both excellent musicians, artist, dramaticists. Simply amazing together. Wait until you get to How to be Me (live version). Chinny's songs are maybe a bit NSFW for your channel however I think you could get away with Fingers and Little Girl Gone with only a couple of silent bleeps. Her voice is so beautiful and powerful. Like Ren, her live versions are very different from the official versions and are worth the reaction in addition to the officials.

I have a severe, painful, disabling autoimmune disease, and unlike Ren, and stuck in the U.S. medical complex for “care”, I will not recover. A floating chalk outline is easy to imagine around my body. The pain is such that I can’t sleep or relax or be still. My skin is on fire, my eyes, the inside of my mouth. I pass out when upright for more than a few minutes. My joints burn and I can’t use my hands much or well. So much is behind me and nothing ahead. Soon, perhaps all that will remain of my existence here will be a chalk outline. I smile at the thought. No more pain.

Last year (2023) from September to February of this year (2024) I was having a cascade of seizures that really should have killed me and very, very nearly did. I listened to this song a lot during that. I woke up every morning wishing I could be just about anyone else on the planet. I survived, but I had to fight the doctors in my area every step of the way for help. I spent probably two months playing jumprope on death's door. I don't think I will ever adequately have the words to describe the pain. Even now, months later and healing, I don't trust my own definitions of pain. My blood pressure always reflects that it's higher than I think it is...

So, you've got a bit of catching up on Chinchilla and not just the Ren collaborations...
The noise in the hallway sounded like voices to me. I thought of a pist he did of being on a bus at 15 with just the driver, and hallucinating the sounds of a hundred voices murmuring. He did hear voices all the time until he banished them when he was nine. The financial records might have already been at that location or they could hark back to the business of drugs in the medical industry.

I would like to warn you, given the recent loss of your brother (deepest sympathies), to try to be somewhat prepared if you go on to react to Ren & Chinchilla performing “How to be Me”. That song deals with mental struggles associated with the loss of loved ones.

You should check out the Alternative to Jenny and Screech it has a positive outcome.. I think you would like it.. I wouldn't necessarily react to it because the song is AI generated.. but its basically as What IF? What if instead of freezing and going quiet like her mother.. instead Jenny finds courage.. when the blade is brought out Jenny steps forward and speaks.. and it ends the cycle for both of them.. its pretty clever.. Its on a page called Renegade.. and they also have a song from the perspective of the Officer who shoots screech and what he is going through. I think you would enjoy it.. maybe check it out on your own time.. and mention it in a reaction if you enjoy it.

@ awww man. I hate to be the one to tell you. Ren lost a very close childhood friend to self deletion. Ren tried to get to him to stop it but it was too late. He has songs about him and obviously losing his friend, Joe, has changed him forever. I’m sorry.
