As usual great explanation of the musical background and piece's structure. And the ultimate "ha, ha, ha" moment: "Wagner's chromaticism in Tristan & Isolde seems like a child's play compared to what Dowland has achieved here!" I love it.

Sublime! I would love to hear your take on Dowland's "Forlorn Hope fancy".

Thank you! Actually, I recorded Forlorn Hope Fancy about a year and a half ago, so if you scroll through my past videos you'll find it. (I would post a link here, but sometimes TH-cam considers links to be spam, and then you may never see this reply :-) ) I hope you enjoy listening to it as well!

Wow! I know Dowland's works for viols of course and a bit of his lute repertoire, but I missed this Fancy! Incredible piece and a wonderful performance! (and no complains about the temperament this time ;) ).

Thank you! It is a gorgeous piece indeed. And yes, in this case meantone is helpful rather than objectionable, since the piece is not in c minor :-)

Is it "Dough-land, or Dow-land"? ;) I love Dowland's music, no matter how you say it, and hope to play some of his music on the lute in the near future.

There is a bit of a debate regarding the pronunciation, and I think the evidence is contradictory, so perhaps we'll never know. The argument for "Dough-land" (which is what I do), is that Dowland frequently used the phrase "semper Dowland, semper dolens," and this wordplay depends on "Dowland" and "dolens" being pronounced the same way. We'll probably never know, but I kind of like this line of argument :-)

@@johnmoraitis My last name, which has its origins in England, is pronounced "Rough-land", so I suspect you may be correct.
Ironically, until I watched this video, I always heard the name in my head as "Dow-land".

Certainly the way I pronounce it is less common, and sometimes I still hear in my head the more usual pronunciation, as that is the one I had also used for many years :-) Thank you for providing more evidence!
