Thomas Tomkins: A Sad Paven for these Distracted Tymes (February 14, 1649). John Moraitis, harpsichord.
Harpsichord by Martine Argellies (Montpellier, 2012), after Dulcken.
Temperament: quarter-comma meantone. A=415 Hz.
Lovely. I wonder how this was received in 1649. Seems a tad dangerous considering it's a month after the execution of Charles I.
I would need to do some research on this. However, considering it was never published, I imagine it may not have circulated widely -- so that perhaps only "like-minded" people would have known of it.
Ah. Thanks.
Wonderfully sublime piece as well as playing. I also really enjoyed following along with the sheet music; keep them coming! :)
Thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed the piece and the performance, and of course I'll keep posting videos :)
Outstanding, John. Wow. Thanks.
John This is a marvellous piece. I enjoy your playing way. Your Martine's harpsichord sounds beautifully. Merci infiniment John
Thank you so much! It is indeed a marvellous piece, and I also like the way it sounds on Martine's harpsichord!
Moving and lovely piece, John! And gorgeously played. Temperament and sound equally beautiful. Thanks for posting!
Thank you, dear Yves!
Enjoyed so much how might I get this score?
Thank you! The only edition I know of (and the one I have) is the fifth volume of Musica Britannica, which is devoted to Tomkins's keyboard music. I got it used many years ago, and unfortunately I am not sure how easy it is to find, which is a pity. It is still available, of course. Are there any university libraries in your area? They would probably have it...
