    I've learned more about boots and shoes watching your videos these past 2 days than I knew my entire 72 years! I stopped buying workboots 16 years ago after I retired. They usually hurt my feet and I now know why. I bought them cheaply and just added a pair of Dr. Scholls which had to be replaced every couple of weeks. Now I wear sneakers and casual slip-ons like Sketchers but I choose them more wisely and comfort is always primary.

    I admire the fact that traditional companies like Nicks are surviving these days. I wish I could justify getting a pair, Overlander or Robert. They're uniquely beautiful, and we don't need to talk about the workmanship.

    • @richardpatterson4312

      The question is how do you justify paying for child labor of the boots you wear.
      But seriously, if they are as comfy as people say abs they lay as long as people say the the math is easy.
      Normal good boots $180+. Buy a pair per year or more.
      Nicks $500 and they last 10 with resoles every other year.
      So what's that? 150x5+500=1250.
      So it's 1250 vs 1800.
      If they last as long as people say. Worth the gamble for me. I'll let you know in ten years. Then come on Wednesday.

      @@richardpatterson4312 Nicks and Whites are quality. I had a pair of Whites I bought in 1999 that I finally retired this year when my new pair of Nicks Builder Pros showed up. I had gotten out of construction and the boots were not worn every day, but I did get a good ten years of use out of them. Last decade they were used around for house projects. I’ve lived in Spokane all my life and it’s weird that a local boot maker is so famous all of the sudden. It used to be no one outside of our area had ever heard of Nick’s or White’s boots. Yet probably 50% of blue collar workers from 1990-2010 wore to em in Spokane. 2010 is about when I first started hearing murmurs on the internet about Nick’s becoming world renowned. Happy for them

For the first time in quite a while I have no problem whatsoever with this paid video because as you stated, when you cut a boot in half the way you do (not gonna lie, this one hurt) you can’t hide bias, and all cards are on the table. There are no dirty secrets. I really appreciate this about your videos. I’ve been watching your channel since your second video and there is no mystery to why it has become so popular. You give people something they just can’t get anywhere else. Keep up the great work.

    I think it may be a bit easier to cut through all these boots with a band saw blade that has less teeth and a bigger gullet. The heat is created when there isn’t enough space in the gullets to remove the saw dust quickly enough. At least that’s how it works in woodworking 👍🏼

The boot fit is incredible, wear them over any shoe, and feel just as good from the start of the day until taking them off before bed. Looks like an awesome boot for sure. I like that thickness of leather (and color). Now, for my completely unsolicitied opinion lol, 500+ for an old school work style like a moc toe seems steep, though I do like that 270 stitchdown welt (haven't seen that in a moc toe before!). If I am paying 450-500+ for nicks, I'm getting an MTO heritage boot. Hard to see the value in a moc for 500+ when you could get a Whites Perry made up the street for half the price.
    But like I said, my unsolicited opinion lol. just for a moc toe wedge seems pricey, and for the other sole options I would go MTO. But as always, Rose_Anvil kills it, and makes another awesome video. Thank you Rose Anvil and thank you Nicks for continuing to make killer stuff!

    Serious question: All the Nicks boots you've reviewed have a long 'break in' period (especially these Moc-Toe boots). Surely it can't be good for your feet to be in agony for 200 hours of wear time before they fit correctly?

    • @DieselSniffer3500
      @DieselSniffer3500 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      So, the thing with custom boots is, they fit immediately. Unlike with production boots, where the break-in is partially about the leather stretching and molding to fit your toes and heel, those areas fit great out of the box in custom boots. What they lack is flexibility. They don't yet bend where you bend, and it takes awhile for that to happen. The ankles do need to form, too, and the folded tongues need to flatten out. But, if you stood still in them all day, they'd feel amazing. They just wouldn't break in. Movement does that.

    • @ThomasSteed
      @ThomasSteed 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The amount of material left on the welt most likely. The danners probably don't have as much leather left past the stitching.

    • @ImDudePlayinADude
      @ImDudePlayinADude 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, danner isn't paying are they? /s (or maybe not, i havent decided yet)

    • @Jopeymessmusic
      @Jopeymessmusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's to do with the leather. Nick's are just better quality than danner. The danner mocs are some of the thinnest moc toes he's cut apart. Nick's are stitching down into about 7mm of highest graded leather. The danners can't compete with that kind of construction.

    I‘ve got one gripe with these. Stitch down in this price category is a bad idea with a soft wedge sole. Every time the boots get resoled the edges get sanded - and with a stitch down there is only so much material to sand away until the upper is ruined.
    Long lasting soles like the super heavy duty Vibram lug sole they normally use are a much better choice.

    • @patrickli9077
      @patrickli9077 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah this is my main issue with stitchdown too. However, Nicks offers a rebuild(not just resole) service where they replace the entire vamp and counter leather using the exact same leather as the original on the same last. This means that essentially you can replace the "welt" on one of these boots if it is ground down too much.

    To break in a pair of brand new really stiff boots, here's what I do. Smear liberally the whole leather with dubbin. (Remove the laces first) Place the boots outside in the sun for at least 15-30 mins. Repeat the process. Let the boots cool down from the heat of the sun. Lace up the boots, put them on and start walking them in. The idea of the dubbin is to soak into the leather, to soften it and make it more pliable. I've done this with Rossi, Blundstone and Taipan work boots (no longer made).

    I've never totally understood the love for Moc-toes....
    Sometimes I think it has to do with allowing a taller more squared toe box for toe room, but these Nick's don't have that. So it is really just an extra stitch? Which makes it ornamental?
    Or does that stitch help keep toe box structure without celastic?
    I also wonder if it is often more the comfortable sole they are generally attrached to more so than the actual Moc-toe?
    One thing I definitely understand about it is that it was an easy design to make long ago so it was a logical evolution for the Indians to come to & stick with. I have definitely really liked my moc-toe boat shoes over the years.
