I just read an interview with him where he said this was maybe the second time he has ever done a drum solo. Who woulda thunk it. In the interview he talks about how he gives Rush's Neil Peart a buddy of his a hard time about Pearts solo's.I guess for the most part Copeland is anti solo or at least its not what he really likes to do. Talked about how he and Peart are opposites,Peart plays well rehearsed figures while Stewart tends to wing it with less of a plan. Two greats that deliver the goods
Its not a competition, to me Copeland, Bonham, Paice, Peart, Gadd, Cobham, Heismann, Rich, Bruford, Phillips, the list goes on if you love drumming then love em all they are and were all Fucking great drummers
Rush is such an exclusive club that even Stewart Copeland wouldn’t be included. Geddy and Alex would never let that happen. They were way too close and Neil was aww so special!
If you think a great drummer is someone who is waving their arms all over the place, seriously, check Stewart Copeland out!! THAT is how you play the drums! You let your wrists and the sticks themselves mostly do the work. The rest of your arms you do not need to wave around like a mad man 99% of the time. It will only unnecessarily tire you out.
I think it has less to do with the drumming itself and more with showmanship. Most of the people who wave their arms around like crazy have to do that for an entire show and still maintain a tight rhythm...that's some serious endurance and focus, regardless of their musical ability.
For those who are wondering what's the composition's title, it is "Birds of Prey" on Stewart's album, "Orchastralli", the same album Letterman promoted right here.

There is no such thing IMO.
no "one" drummer is the best. some of the greatest drummers are not well known to the genral public. Only drummers would know these guys. Personally I love Terry Bozio. You're 100% correct so many great drummers.
Don't forget Bonzo. Led Zeppelin. He was an icon.
had no idea this guy was so good until i watched an old 1980s live set. underrated drummer
I saw the Police in 1980 and thought this guy has got a groove on, Fantastic!
yup
For all of the critiques are worth (y'all be the judge) Stewart Copeland is one of a few drummers who played and still plays with lots of style. That's what drew me towards the Police in the first place. It was their SOUND!! It still burns me they didn't give up one more album before they made their exit. But that's life. I still have what they left in the midst.
Loved him since the beginning and Gavin Harrison!
Ellen Cox I was going to sub your channel until I saw your liked vids, Jesus, even Stewart wouldn't sub your channel with crap vids like that
Steward coplaND, Is a wonderful gift from God. So fascinating i love his interviews on you tube
やっぱ凄くいいなぁ♪手足のコンビネーションでドロロやるのもいいけど、こういうプレイは更にいい。
Always one of my favs. Just great to watch him practice
This guy is a legend👏🏻
My hero Love this guy. Brillant talented and one of the best of all time.
Very Spyro!
Spyrogyra, yessssssssss!
My thoughts exactly! Anybody knows what song is that and from which project?
Spyro The Dragon references...
Very Spyro indeed, given as he composed it. The song is "Birds of Prey" from his album Orchestralli.
More Gyra!
Stewart Copeland is simply fucking OUTSTANDING. Always loved his style and excellent tuning!
Reason why I always have 3 splash cymbals in my set up for past 35 yrs

Thank God, another normal person !
Reason why I never took up drums. Couldn't hold a candle to him so why try?
markeemark85
pAisTe i hope.
@@gutbucket260 it's always worth playing drums, even if it's just there to release and calm the spirit.
...and all this time I thought it was because of Manu Katche.
he was very creative and had lots of style playing in the Police he was the perfect drummer for that band and we owe a lot to him.
Drummers, this is a real drummer.
Drummers, they all real good drummers just different flavours and sounds, but you can learn from all off them ,really love copeland, ian paice, porcaro, bonham, clem burke, and check out simon phlipss he isalso very good, all diffirent styles are good to study, thanks.
Guitarists, this is not a guitarist.
We're very lucky to have your opinions.
Simone Buonadonna commenters, this is a comment
So..she said I was a real man !!
World's greatest percussionist!!!
That's the first actual solo if ever seen, 😎
Its not a competition, to me Copeland, Bonham, Paice, Peart, Gadd, Cobham, Heismann, Rich, Bruford, Phillips, the list goes on if you love drumming then love em all they are and were all Fucking great drummers
Stewart actually looks like a Stewart…and he plays like one!
Groove Maestro !
these 3:36 is a breath of fresh air in the desert of the new " music " out these days.
Support from 🇮🇹
I just had a great idea. Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Stewart Copeland. The New Rush.
I'd travel to see that.
Rush is such an exclusive club that even Stewart Copeland wouldn’t be included. Geddy and Alex would never let that happen. They were way too close and Neil was aww so special!
Love Stewart Copeland's playing and sound; very distinctive and oft-emulated.
How does he keep those arms attached to their sockets ?
there is no space where he ends and his drums begin, they are the same. I dont think I have ever seen that in another drummer. Brilliant!

I bet you're a really shit drummer.
For those who are wondering what's the composition's title, it is "Birds of Prey" on Stewart's album, "Orchastralli", the same album Letterman promoted right here.
Amazing drummer
One of the greatest drummers I have ever personally met
My favorite drummers...Neil Peart, Tim Alexander and Stewart Copeland.
Any two of those drummers are also favorites of the third.
Listening to Stewart Copeland taught me to do cool delays on my snare drum. And that high tuning on rack toms can sound cool.
