I am a mood reader, but still like making a pile of possibilities each month 🤷♀ I agree about physical books being the way to go (when possible). I used to only read on my kindle, but because I couldn't see the cover/title/author often, I would forget what books I read since those things weren't in my face. I keep meaning to read those Osman books! I have the first one, just need to get to it. How cool to have T. Kingfisher come to your work. You have a lot of genres there! Happy december reading!
The pile of possibilities is the best haha I found my old nook (I used to work at B&N) last year and started going through and found a bunch of stuff I forgot I had read. Weird experience. I've made an effort the last couple months to read different genres and it's been a total game changer. Hope you have a good month of reading as well!
Also hellz yes to Gentleman in Moscow. I don't reread much because I will never get to read all the books I have in my house before I die, but I reread that one. I find it a true testament to his talent as an author that he was able to write such a long book set entirely in one place and yet it was never boring or repetitive. I also think that reading it during the pandemic when many of us were either forced to quarantine or choosing to stay at home made it so much more relatable than it might otherwise have been which didn't hurt. I was able to go to his author talk a couple of months ago here in Ohio. He was surprisingly very funny. Not what I expected at all.
I couldn’t agree more about A Gentleman in Moscow. It surprised me in so many ways. Every time I thought I knew what kind of story it was it would shift slightly. Towles is just a master of character. Not sure if you’ve read the rest of his stuff but all his characters stick with me. I think I laughed out loud during each of his books at one point do it doesn’t surprise me that he was funny. I’ve read a couple interviews and he seems chill and down to earth. Which I would not be if I wrote like him 😂
I'm changing up my reading strategy for 2024. I am in a monthly book club, so those books take priority. Once I finish the book club book each month, I will then chose my next read from a loose TBR list. This consists of 10-20 books that I'm interested in reading - and I'll pick whatever I'm most interested in/curious about at that point in time. I'm making sure to keep my TBR filled up with various genres, too, so if I'm in the mood for epic fantasy, that's what I'll read. If I want to try a mystery or a non-fiction - BAM - pick it up and read it. Hoping this will allow me to get through more books next year.
Love it! That sounds like a great plan. A good mix of structure and freedom. That’s what really keeps me excited about reading. I’ll be looking forward to seeing what you end up reading next year!
This is exactly what i needed right now! Been trying to work out how to bring back more enjoyment to reading! And had settled on no planning and then this popped up to put it in better words! Great video
I really like this BookTube trend of switching from saying "TBR" to saying "MBR." I think the flexibility implied is a good thing. I give this idea 2 scoops of raisins, much like those purportedly added to every box of Kellogg's Raisin Bran. I didn't read the Susan Cooper series until I was in my 20s because I somehow missed them when I was younger. Loved Piranesi. Used to teach Norse mythology; Gaiman's version of the tales are very accurate compared to source material and more entertaining than most other versions. I have a signed copy; it is one of my most treasured books.
I remembered absolutely nothing from The Dark is Rising. It was like reading it completely new. Really liked it though. Piranesi blew me away. I’m not much of a book collector but I would treasure any Gaiman signed edition. Also, very much enjoy Raisin Bran. An underrated cereal
Interesting to hear how moving to reading one book at a time is working so well for you. I used to read one book at a time, but now generally have 3 on the go and that works for me but can definitely see me going back to one at a time at some point in the future. Piranesi is great! Hope you enjoy. I picked a second hand copy of Ancillary Justice this week! Looking forward to reading it when I get to it
Piranesi was so good! Just finished it. I do really like the laid back approach of reading multiple books at the same time. It's probably the most natural thing for me to do. But I get through stuff faster if I focus one at a time and since I have deadlines with new releases for work that's just how I have to roll at the moment. But things things always change. I bet in six months I'll be saying I have to read four books at a time or else I won't read at all haha
Absolutely love this. I'm still dead set on my Kindle, but I've recently just created a collection for my "short list" of books to read. I just update it when I add and remove things from it. Ancillary Justice is one I've been wanting to jump into for a long time!
I think I would find a way to make an ereader fit my mood reading if I didn't work at a bookstore. I love reading on my nook I just have a hard time not using my employee discount to buy books >_
I don't usually have that problem because if I'm reading multiple books I'm reading very different things. However, when I was reading Gardens of the Moon and The Archive Undying at the same time that was a challenge. Because even though the plots are completely different they both required a lot of focus and brain space to understand what was happening.

Serendipity! My last two months have been the best reading of the year. So I hope you’re able to find similar success and enjoyment!

I can not imaging trying to read more than 1 book at one time!
I feel like I’ve always done it because of balancing school reading with personal reading 🤷🏻♂️
I can’t read more than one book at a time, I get plot stuff mixed up between the two 😅
