You don't even want to know what type of squeal I let out when I got this notifciation, so happy to hear you are safely back in your house and ready to get back to filming! 🤍 Absolutely love this diverse list of faves, you have sold me on quite a few books that I had never heard of before!! My favourite of 2024 was Asunder by Kerstin Hall, which is just criminally underrated! Very much looking forward to the podcast style videos you have in store for us. Happy reading and filming! 🤩
I lost a brother too when we were both still young and you are right - it does color the way you see/read/experience things for the rest of your existence. One of the beautiful things about books is that everyone can read the same book but have a totally different experience depending on what they have been through in their life or what stage of life they are. I enjoy periodically reading things that I haven't read for at least a decade and seeing the story through new eyes colored by what I've been through and where I've been since I last read the book. It's fascinating how much you can relate to a story in SO many new ways that had never occurred to you the first time you read it, especially if you've lived/grown a lot since that first read.
Ah, man, that's such a rough thing to have in common. Not something you ever really get over. I completely agree about rereading things and getting a different experience as you get older. I'm often trying to convince people to devote time to rereading as well as just reading new stuff for that very reason. Becoming a parent and getting older has made a HUGE shift in how I engage with books and movies.
@@punkrockcerealbowl holy crap yes -- parenting TOTALLY changes how you see just about everything in the world; it's crazy how much it affects your perspective
Great video Robert! Good to see you again. Sorry about the crazy year but glad you stayed safe it seems through it all. Hope you enjoy the rest of your day!
Glad you’re back in your house and back filming! Lions of Al-Rassan was so great for me too this year, and I can’t wait to get into Shards of Earth. lol on looking down the barrel of all Tchaikovsky’s stuff - at least they usually read fast! Love seeing all the variety you read!
Thank you thank you! Good to be back for sure. Glad you enjoyed Lions as well, GGK always hits. And yeah, I'm gonna keep chipping away at Tchaikovsky. Like you mentioned, they do read fast. I don't typically get through a trilogy as fast as I did with Final Architecture.
HE'S BACK!!!! So good to see you again! - Really wanting to get into Buehlmann at some point this year - The Spear Cuts Through Water was such a cool read! Really happy you're doing well and am excited to see your new videos! Editing sucks so I feel you. Let the authenticity shine, my man
Wooo! Thanks for the warm welcome back! I'm hoping to read Between Two Fires by Buehlmann this year, which I know is different from the two fantasy books I've read but I hear great things about it.
Thank you good sir! It's good to be back. I think the variety was my biggest take away from last year. I focus purely on mood reading and it super worked out
Whoo Hoo welcome back, Robert. 2024 can suck it haha!! I hope this means you are returning to the Tube. I plan to myself in a week or so. Great list of books, glad to see some unique reads here on your list I don't see otherwise on booktube. Hoping 2025 is a better year for both of us. - Cheers
Great to see you back, buddy! 😀Fab list of favourites -- glad you managed to get some great reading in amongst what sounds like a crazy year. Love that you've got a picture book at number one, sounds excellent, have popped it on my wish list (along with a few others on the list!). Adrian Tchaikovsky - oh man, I had the exact same reaction as you, though for me it was after reading _Children of Time_ in summer last year! I flew through all three of that trilogy, and absolutely fell in love with his writing. I've read at least one of his books each month since, and will continue on in that fashion until I'm caught up (if I can ever actually 'catch up' - he's flippin' prolific!). Am currently two books into his _Tyrant Philosphers_ series, and that has been a complete eye-opener for me. I'm not a big fantasy fan, haven't had much luck finding fantasy I get on with in the past, but this series has, so far, been phenomenal. Am definitely going to get to the _Final Architecture_ trilogy soon -- it's in my library, waiting to be read, and seeing you talk about it here has made me want to jump into ASAP. Here's to many more fabulous adventures courtesy of Mr Tchaikovsky over the coming months and years! 👍
Woo! Glad to be back and seeing so many friendly faces again. On Tchaikovsky, I can't decide if I'm going to jump into Children of Time or Tyrant Philosophers next. I'm going to try to pick something of his for my store's SFF bookclub so I have an excuse to read him more haha
@@punkrockcerealbowl I think I might have been the only one who stuck close to the timing. Everyone else kept pushing it off, but I was too enthralled by the series.
Dungeons & Drama was on my list, too! It's objectively awful but I preordered the sequel immediately upon reading! 😆 Glad you're back - your personal well-being is way more important than TH-cam!
Hahahaha I'm glad to be back. I've definitely missed your comments and updates. I've read the sequel already and you'll probably love/hate it just as much.
Holy hell, Robert, I'm sorry you had such a horrendous year! I'm very eager to get to Buehlman and I have The Blacktongue Thief on my shelf awaiting my attention, but I have a thing about wanting to read stories in chronological order. Would I run into problems if I don't read those two books in publication order?
Josh! Thank you, and good to hear from you as always. You can definitely read in chronological order, it might even be better that way. I reread The Blacktongue Thief after The Daughters’ War and it really added depth to what was already a story I loved
I like the new setup but I will miss Pinky. Embrace the no-edits. People are way too fastidious about their presence and performance online - this is way more organic and just as nice to listen to. Incredibly sorry to hear about the fire. I just assumed you were on a different kind of hiatus. I cannot WAIT to read The Daughter's War. Got to meet Buehlman this past summer and he was so funny and fun to listen to. The Brothers Gwynne praise his books a lot.
The setup is not set in stone yet! I'm hoping to work Pinky back into it if possible, I'm very proud of that painting. These are brand new bookshelves so I'm still getting books set up how I want. And yeah, switching to edits feels right. I blab about books all the time at work so I'm trying to make this feel more relaxed and how I would chat if you walked into the store. I'm JEALOUS that you got to meet Buehlman. I talked to his publicist and we almost got him to zoom in for the store's bookclub but he was a little burnt out from press over the summer I think.
Happy to have you back! Glad things are settling and great list

This made me smile so big! The response I've had from coming back has been amazing. I really missed you all.

Seeing this video made my day brother. It so great to see you back at home and back on the Tube. Awesome list my friend. Tell Balboa I say hi. lol.
Heck yeah I feel the love. I'll tell Balboa you said hi. He lost an eye in the move so poor dude isn't camera ready anymore haha

Thanks! It definitely was a wild one but I’m glad to be back

Truly, 2024 can suck it. Such a gnarly, dumb year. Glad we're making a comeback though!

Good to see you back, Robert. Glad to hear you loved The Final Architecture. That was my favorite read of '24.
The Final Architecture was so good! I'm glad I started the buddy read in Allen's discord even if I didn't stick with the timing haha
@@punkrockcerealbowl I think I might have been the only one who stuck close to the timing. Everyone else kept pushing it off, but I was too enthralled by the series.
@Rogue_VI haha it did seem like when I finished it I wasn’t TOO far behind everyone else
I had never seen your videos before, but I'm subscribed now! Love the way you talk about books!
Thank you so much! That makes me feel really good considering I was a little nervous about putting out a more improvised and unedited video 😅
Welcome back!
Thank you!
Sounds like an incredible reading year.
It truly was! For all the crazy stuff that happened I at least got to read a bunch of great stuff

Just placed a library hold for A Gentleman and a Thief.
I LOVED The Soear Cuts Through Water! All time favorite.
Woo! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. A fascinating story.
Nice to hear from you. Some good sounding books here. I should try Stephen Graham Jones. Editing is overrated, look forward to it
I was really impressed with SGJ, his writes with such a strong, interesting viewpoint.
And yeah, editing sucks. It was very freeing to just let it rip
